Thailand’s Deputy PM and pro-lese majeste campaigner Chalerm Yubamrung Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung has weighed into the “lese majeste” issue by offering to lead a campaign for the blocking of websites that contain material which offends the monarchy.
The Deputy PM said earlier today that a proposal had been put forward through the cabinet secretary general to Thailand’s Prime Minister, Yingluck Shinawatra. The proposal contains plans for a special “lese majeste” committee that will be responsible for the suppression of websites. Chalerm has put his hand up for the position as chair of the suppression committee, adding that he would coordinate between them Ministries for Interior, and Information and Communication Technology ministries to take prompt action against any website or person that insults the monarchy. He said that action would be taken regardless of political opinions or coloured “shirt”. Mr Chalerm said that the aim of the committee would be to take down or block access to all websites found to breach the country’s strict “lese majeste” laws.
The Pheu Thai deputy leader said that he would not condone breaches of the “lese majeste” laws under any circumstances, including those which may be set up by members of the “red-shirt” movement. Insults to the Thai monarchy under the nation’s strict ‘lese majeste’ laws carry long jail sentences. This law applies to all persons, including foreign travellers.
