BANGKOK (NNT) – To help farmers and members of agricultural cooperatives who are struggling to sell their produce because of the COVID-19 situation, the government’s Department of Agricultural Extension is buying agricultural goods that are facing marketing issues at this time. The goods will be distributed to physicians, nurses and people affected by the outbreak.
Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister, Dr. Chalermchai Sreeon, attended a ceremony to release a caravan of vehicles selling agricultural produce, including 13.3 tons of rice, 4.5 tons of fresh vegetables, 7.5 tons of fruit, 10,000 chicken eggs, 2,500 packs of ready-to-eat meals and 85,000 bottles of drinking water. The activity has received support from the Department of Agricultural Extension, agricultural cooperatives, farmers, Lotus supermarket and network partners.
In addition, 500,000 baht was donated to support a project to help Thai farmers fight against COVID-19. Funds from the donation will be presented to hospitals, field hospitals and 19 prisons in greater Bangkok, to lift the morale of medical personnel, workers in all sectors and members of the public who are facing hardship.
Dr. Chalermchai said that his ministry is focused on product quality and safety. He urged farmers to maintain their production standards. Once the crisis is over, consumers will think of them and still have confidence in their products.
