Bangkok’s new train lines are being introduced, but the steep fares are causing inconvenience.
The Yellow Line, Bangkok’s first monorail transport system, has recently started trial runs and will officially begin services on July 3. However, there are concerns over the pricing of the tickets, which range from 15 baht to 45 baht, as they may be too expensive for low-wage earners. The average fare in Thailand is already higher than in many other countries. There is also dissatisfaction with the inconvenience of transferring between different train lines and the lack of facilities such as lifts and escalators, which makes it difficult for elderly or disabled individuals. The incoming government has promised to reduce the train fare, but the resolution of this issue may take time. Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt plans to develop a feeder system to make it more convenient for people to access the train system and hopes to limit the number of cars entering the city to encourage more use of public transportation.
