Super Typhoon Yagi is poised to make landfall in China’s Hainan province, prompting the evacuation of over 400,000 residents. The storm, expected on Friday, has already claimed 13 lives in the Philippines due to flooding and landslides. With wind speeds exceeding 240 kilometers per hour, Yagi is likely to be the strongest typhoon to impact the region in a decade.
Authorities in Hainan have raised their flood emergency response to the third-highest level, preparing for significant challenges ahead. Meanwhile, Hong Kong experienced rain and strong winds from Yagi as officials closed schools and suspended trading at the stock exchange.
After striking southern China, Yagi is projected to head towards northern Vietnam, where tens of thousands are being evacuated. Local authorities have stated this could be the strongest typhoon to affect northern Vietnam in 20 years, mobilizing military personnel and fishing vessels to ensure safety in vulnerable coastal areas.
