Shanghai knife attack kills three, wounds 15 others, Xinhua reports

A knife attack in a Shanghai supermarket left three dead and 15 injured. The assailant, 37, was detained. Stabbings in China are rising, raising safety concerns, especially among Japanese nationals.

In a shocking incident in Shanghai, three people were killed and 15 others injured during a knife attack at a supermarket on Monday, as reported by state-run Xinhua news agency. The victims were swiftly taken to the hospital, but tragically, three did not survive. The attacker, a 37-year-old man named Lin, was apprehended by police shortly after the incident occurred.

Authorities are investigating the stabbing, which adds to a worrying trend of public violence in China. Mental illness is often cited as a contributing factor behind such attacks, which have increasingly targeted children at schools. In a similar context, a 10-year-old student was fatally stabbed in Shenzhen just last month.

While stabbing incidents are relatively rare in Shanghai, they have occurred before. Last year, a man injured 15 people in a hospital stabbing spree, motivated by personal grievances. Such attacks have raised security concerns, particularly among expatriate communities in China, including the Japanese population.
