Indonesia presses China for more investment in high-speed railways

Indonesia is seeking Chinese investment to extend its Whoosh high-speed railway from Jakarta to Surabaya, enhancing connectivity and economic growth while emphasizing the need for diversified international partnerships.

One year after launching Indonesia’s first high-speed train, the Whoosh, linking Jakarta and Bandung, the government is looking to China to extend the line to Surabaya. This expansion aims to reduce travel time from Jakarta to Surabaya from eight hours to four. The Whoosh has already attracted over four million passengers in its first year, prompting the need for enhanced rail service.

A feasibility study is currently underway, with projections indicating a strong economic impact, particularly in cities near the new stations. Transport officials also presented three major railway projects in Shanghai, highlighting plans to connect the Whoosh with urban rail systems and future infrastructure.

While China plays a significant role in developing Indonesia’s rail systems, experts caution against over-reliance on its investment. Diversifying partnerships with other countries could provide better long-term solutions for Indonesia’s transportation infrastructure and enhance regional competitiveness.
