Indonesia’s President Prabowo Subianto emphasized collaboration with China at a $10 billion deal forum, while affirming nonalignment amidst regional tensions and seeking to balance domestic economic impacts of Chinese imports.
Indonesia’s new president, Prabowo Subianto, emphasized the importance of collaboration over confrontation with China during a recent business forum in Beijing, where he signed $10 billion in new agreements. He expressed Indonesia’s aspiration to align with China’s development, both economically and as a “civilizational power,” advocating for peaceful cooperation in the modern age.
Subianto, on his first overseas trip since taking office, is set to continue to the U.S., followed by visits to Peru and Brazil. In discussions with President Xi Jinping, they committed to strengthening bilateral ties, adding security as a key area of cooperation, along with political, economic, maritime, and cultural exchanges.
While Indonesia has largely stayed neutral in South China Sea disputes, it has faced challenges from the influx of low-cost Chinese products affecting local garment manufacturers. The government aims to balance support for domestic industries without disrupting relations with its largest trading partner, China, which has heavily invested in Indonesian infrastructure, including a high-speed railway.
