China has called on the United States to refrain from sending “wrong signals” regarding Taiwan, following a call between U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson and Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te. Lai is on a Pacific tour, which has caused displeasure in Beijing.
The Chinese foreign ministry emphasized that Taiwan is central to its national interests, urging the U.S. to honor commitments against supporting Taiwanese independence. They expressed concerns about the risks separatist actions pose to peace across the Taiwan Strait.
Additionally, China announced sanctions against U.S. firms and executives involved in arms sales to Taiwan. These measures include freezing assets of 13 companies and barring six executives from entering China and its territories.
