The U.S. Treasury sanctioned hacker Yin Kecheng and Sichuan Juxinhe Network for their involvement in extensive hacks on telecom companies, exposing American call logs and conversations to Chinese spies.
The U.S. Treasury Department recently sanctioned hacker Yin Kecheng and his company, Sichuan Juxinhe Network Technology Co., for alleged involvement in cyberattacks against American telecom firms. These attacks, referred to as Salt Typhoon, reportedly compromised vast amounts of Americans’ call logs, raising significant concerns within the U.S. intelligence community.
Lawmakers have described these incidents as among the worst telecom hacks in U.S. history, with some calls intercepted, including those of prominent politicians. The Treasury alleges that Sichuan Juxinhe has close connections to China’s Ministry of State Security, while Kecheng is noted for his over a decade of experience in hacking.
Yin Kecheng, based in Shanghai, is also linked to a recent breach affecting the U.S. Treasury. Efforts to reach him and his company were unsuccessful, and the Chinese embassy in Washington did not provide immediate comments, adhering to China’s standard denial of responsibility for such cyber activities.
