Chinese officials met with Myanmar leaders to discuss border security and crackdown on telecom scams, showing growing frustration with Myanmar’s lack of action against the scams. Recent rebel alliance victories also discussed.
Senior Chinese officials recently held talks with Myanmar amid growing concerns about border security and telecom scams involving rebel groups and Myanmar’s junta. Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong visited Myanmar, meeting with junta leader Min Aung Hlaing to discuss border stability and the crackdown on telecom scams. In addition, China’s minister of public security, Wang Xiaohong, had a video call with Myanmar’s home affairs minister, Lieutenant-General Yar Pyae, to address these issues.
China, a key junta ally with close ties to some ethnic Chinese militias along their shared border, has become increasingly frustrated with the lack of action from the Myanmar junta in shutting down scam centers targeting Chinese citizens. The “Three Brotherhood Alliance” has recently gained control of Laukkai town, a key town along the volatile northern border with China, after weeks of fighting with junta troops. This alliance has been conducting a sweeping offensive against the military government since seizing power in a 2021 coup, posing a significant threat.
Despite the junta’s failure to respond to requests for comments, Beijing has been facilitating dialogue between the two sides and has called for a cease-fire to end the ongoing violence.
