Russian and Chinese officials emphasize the need for Moscow’s involvement in discussing a Ukraine settlement. They met to discuss the crisis and highlighted Russia’s interests and security concerns.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin and China’s special representative for Eurasian affairs, Li Hui, emphasized the necessity of Moscow’s involvement in any discussions regarding a settlement for Ukraine, as stated by the Russian foreign ministry on Sunday. Li Hui, on his second trip to Europe to promote a political resolution for the crisis in Ukraine, held talks with Galuzin, with plans to also visit Poland, Ukraine, and Germany during his tour. The Russian foreign ministry described the discussions as engaged and thorough, emphasizing the importance of Russia’s participation and considerations of its security interests in any diplomatic resolutions.
The ongoing Ukrainian crisis, triggered by Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022 under the guise of a “special military operation” to “denazify” the country, has continued for over two years. Despite the conflict resulting in daily civilian casualties, Kyiv and its Western allies maintain that Russia’s actions are an unprovoked land grab, in contrast to Moscow’s narrative. The conflict has drawn international attention due to its severe humanitarian impact and the ongoing loss of life among Ukrainian civilians caught in the crossfire.
The joint statement from the Russian and Chinese officials underlines the crucial role of Russia in any potential political and diplomatic resolution to the Ukrainian crisis. The statement, published on the Russian foreign ministry’s website, stresses the necessity of considering Russia’s security interests in the region during negotiations. As the conflict rages on, with devastating consequences for civilians, international efforts to reach a peaceful resolution remain critical in addressing the ongoing crisis in Ukraine.
