Philippines sends ships to disputed atoll, says China building ‘artificial island’

Philippines has deployed ships to disputed South China Sea area, accusing China of building an artificial island. Tensions escalate as China denies allegations, prompting calls for Chinese diplomats expulsion.

The Philippines has deployed ships to a disputed area in the South China Sea where it accused China of constructing “an artificial island.” President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s office confirmed the coast guard’s ship was sent to monitor the alleged illegal activities, with two more vessels rotating in the area. The Philippine coast guard suspects China of engaging in small-scale reclamation at the Sabina Shoal, known to Manila as Escoda.

The Chinese Embassy in Manila did not immediately respond to the accusations, which could further strain bilateral relations. The Philippine national security adviser has called for expelling Chinese diplomats following an alleged leak of a phone conversation regarding the maritime dispute. Tensions between Beijing and Manila have escalated over conflicting territorial claims in the waters, a crucial trade route worth $3 trillion annually.

China’s extensive land reclamation efforts in the South China Sea, which include building military facilities, have raised concerns among neighboring countries and the United States. The Philippine coast guard has anchored a vessel at the Sabina Shoal to monitor and document the dumping of crushed corals. Chinese ships, including research and navy vessels, have been spotted in the area alongside dead and crushed coral piles, prompting investigations by marine scientists to determine the cause of the phenomenon.
