China, Canada should work toward strategic partnership, Wang says

China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi urges Canada to normalize relations and establish a strategic partnership. Both countries discussed trade, economy, and cooperation while addressing previous issues including Huawei’s CFO detention.

During a meeting in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi expressed his desire for China and Canada to repair and strengthen their relationship, aiming to establish a strategic partnership. The discussions between Wang and Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly, the first by a Canadian foreign minister in seven years, highlighted the challenges faced by the two countries in recent years, including the strained relations following the arrests of Huawei’s CFO, Meng Wanzhou, and two Canadians in China.

Despite past difficulties, Wang emphasized to Joly that there are no fundamental conflicts of interest between China and Canada. He stressed the importance of maintaining and developing bilateral relations for the benefit of both countries and their people. Joly, on the other hand, affirmed Canada’s adherence to the one-China policy and expressed willingness to enhance cooperation with China in various areas such as trade, economy, tourism, climate change, and drug control.

The tensions between China and Canada escalated in 2018 when Meng Wanzhou was arrested in Canada at the request of the United States, leading to the arrest of two Canadians in China. Despite the subsequent release of all three individuals, the relationship between the two countries remained strained. Issues related to Taiwan, Tibet, Xinjiang, and Hong Kong were also addressed in the meeting, with China asserting that these are domestic matters that should not be interfered with by Canada.
