China warns Japan to not interfere with its plans for Taiwan, threatening a heavy price. Japanese lawmakers visit Taiwan, discussing defense, deterrence, and peace in the Taiwan Strait. Potential future Japanese PM supports Taiwan’s position.
China recently issued a warning to Japan regarding Taiwan, threatening that Japan would face severe consequences if it intervened in Beijing’s plans for the self-ruled island. This warning came after a group of Japanese lawmakers, including former Defense Minister Shigeru Ishiba, visited Taiwan and emphasized the importance of resisting China’s aggression to maintain peace in the Taiwan Strait.
During a press conference at Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry, Ishiba highlighted the need to prevent a conflict with China, expressing concerns about a potential invasion and occupation of Taiwan similar to what happened in Ukraine. Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te also stressed the importance of strengthening national defense and economic resilience in the face of China’s growing threat to the Indo-Pacific region.
Despite not having formal diplomatic relations, Japan supports maintaining the status quo between Taiwan and China, as most of Taipei’s allies do. With Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida announcing his intention to step down, potential successors like Ishiba are emerging as favorites to lead the Liberal Democratic Party and potentially become Japan’s next prime minister.
