Activist defending himself in Hong Kong security trial says he has no remorse

Hong Kong activist Ng Kin-wai expressed no remorse in a national security trial, defending his involvement in pro-democracy actions and emphasizing his commitment to democratic values and peaceful resistance.

In a significant national security trial in Hong Kong, activist Ng Kin-wai stated he feels no remorse for his actions during a controversial poll that led to charges of conspiracy to commit subversion against him and 46 others in 2021. Defending himself in court, Ng expressed he would not apologize for his beliefs or the values he shares with his supporters.

Ng, who was elected to the Yuen Long District Council in 2019 and garnered over 20,500 votes in a subsequent pre-selection ballot, asserted that his involvement in the unofficial primaries was driven by a desire for democracy, opposing totalitarian rule. He emphasized the need for a free and inclusive society, grounded in human rights and justice.

Pointing out the challenges of making legislative changes with limited support, Ng argued that the peaceful nature of the primaries was a preferable alternative during a period of widespread unrest. He maintained that the demands of the protesters, including universal suffrage, are reasonable and deserved consideration amidst the political turmoil.
