Leveraging postage stamps as a soft power to boost the economy

Thailand Post has seen a decline in traditional letter writing due to digitalization and social media. To boost revenue and promote its postage stamps, the agency has focused on issuing limited editions and collaborating with designers and artists. It has also created an online platform for philatelists and introduced an iStamp service. Additionally, Thailand Post plans to issue digital stamps as NFTs and is celebrating its 140th anniversary with a special exhibition.

Thailand Post Adapts to Digitalization and Focuses on Philately as a Source of Soft Power

Postal service providers worldwide, including Thailand Post, have been facing challenges due to the rise of digitalization, which was further accelerated by the Covid-19 pandemic. Traditional letter writing has significantly declined as people now rely on the internet and social media platforms for communication. The demand for postage stamps has decreased, leading to a decline in revenue for Thailand Post. To boost its revenue, Thailand Post has streamlined its operations and adopted innovative technologies. It now promotes postage stamps as a source of the country’s soft power, issuing limited editions to attract collectors around the world.

Thailand Post recognizes that postage stamps hold cultural and historical significance. They not only serve as a means of payment for postal services but also celebrate anniversaries, important events, and national heritage. The agency has released stamps with various themes to attract collectors and has even introduced an ‘iStamp’ service, allowing people to create personalized stamps using their smartphones. Additionally, Thailand Post plans to create an online platform for philatelists to exchange stamps and information. The agency aims to collaborate with renowned designers and artists to create special projects and introduce stamps that can be used as digital assets or non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

Thailand Post Celebrates its 140th Anniversary and Showcases Philately Exhibition

Thailand Post is marking its 140th anniversary with a special philately exhibition at the Thai National Postal Museum. The exhibition highlights the origin of Thai postage stamps and provides insights into the historical “Solot” series. Visitors can also engage in virtual stamp collection and design their stamps through the iStamp service. Thailand Post has printed two sets of the Solot series, with the first series on sale since September 20, coinciding with the birthday of HM the King Rama V. The second series will be released on November 27 during the International Stamp Exhibition, featuring exhibitions of collections by HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn and valuable stamps from around the world.
