BANGKOK, 1 June 2019 (NNT) – The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MNRE) has pushed forward the “Save the Earth, Reduce Plastic Use” Project to reduce the amount of plastic use in the domestic book and publication business this year by 50 percent.
A memorandum of understanding was signed among the relevant agencies to express the will and intention to reduce the use of plastic in Thailand and promote the use of environmentally friendly materials. It is aimed at reducing the use of plastic in the book and publication business, such as by reducing plastic wraps and the use of plastic bags in bookstores by 50 percent of the amount currently used, campaigning for reduction of products made from plastic which is difficult to be degraded, promoting the use of environmentally friendly materials and producing public relations media to raise awareness of the importance of the problem among people.
The Publishers and Booksellers Association of Thailand said more than 220,744 kilograms or over 221 tons of plastic wrap and plastic bags were used in bookstores per year.
