BANGKOK(NNT) – Air pollution, especially the accumulation of PM 2.5 airborne particles, has become a major issue that needs to be solved urgently, as it affects the people, the economy, society, and the environment.
The Thailand Business Council for Sustainable Development (TBCSD) has held a clean air seminar to discuss measures being implemented by 38 member companies. Cars and other vehicles owned by these companies have been checked, while employees are now encouraged to switch to vehicles using natural gas as fuel instead of diesel.
The companies are promoting the use of public transport, and vowed only to purchase farm equipment which does not rely on outdoor burning, in an attempt to encourage environmentally-friendly businesses.
The TBCSD has asked the government to make faster progress in implementing its measures against air pollution, and to further develop a PM 2.5 airborne particle detection network that is accepted by all involved, disclose data related to PM 2.5 airborne particles in a unified manner, and create more partnerships with related sectors.
In the seminar, delegates from government agencies and private companies agreed to move away from the diesel engines long used in personal vehicles; give more promotion to public transportation, and initiate a crackdown on outdoor burning, all of which is intended to reduce sources of PM 2.5 emissions, and to prevent an air quality crisis in the future.
