BANGKOK (NNT) – The UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has decided to fund five new projects, to support climate resilience and protect biodiversity in Thailand and seven other countries, namely Cambodia, Cameroon, Eritrea, Lesotho, Malaysia, Senegal and Vietnam.
The decision to fund the project, to the tune of about US$ 46.6 million, which will be implemented across eight countries, was made during the 60th Global Environment Facility (GEF) Council Meeting and the 30th Least Developed Countries Fund Council Meeting.
The projects will address critical environmental challenges, such as land degradation, biodiversity loss, unsustainable fishing and climate change, which threaten food security and the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of people in Asia and Africa.
FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu said it is vital to take action now, to restore the natural systems on land and water, to achieve better production, better nutrition, a better environment and a better life. These projects will assist countries and communities in adopting more sustainable and climate-resilient practices, foster regional cooperation and enact stronger policies to conserve biodiversity and deter illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.
