CONTINUED SPARE CAPACITY AT GLOBAL SUPPLIERS WARNS OF MANUFACTURING SLUMP PERSISTING INTO 2024: GEP GLOBAL SUPPLY CHAIN VOLATILITY INDEX

0
GEP Global Supply Chain Volatility Index

Global producer capacity goes underutilized for an eighth successive month in November; supplier order books remain unfilled Inactivity across Asia’s supply chains bodes ill for near-term global manufacturing improvement Demand stays subdued, especially in Europe, where manufacturing is in a recession In contrast, North America is displaying greater resistance to global economic drags as supplier spare capacity becomes less prevalent

CLARK, N.J., Dec. 14, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — The GEP Global Supply Chain Volatility Index — a leading indicator tracking demand conditions, shortages, transportation costs, inventories and backlogs based on a monthly survey of 27,000 businesses — was once again in negative territory at -0.34 in November, compared to -0.41 in October, indicating an eighth successive month of spare capacity across global supply chains.

GEP Global Supply Chain Volatility Index

"This persistent, month-after-month, excess vendor capacity means that the end to the global manufacturing recession is still some way off," explained Todd Bremer, vice president, consulting, GEP. "North America continues to buck the global economic headwinds. Continuing excess supplier capacity in Asia gives manufacturers greater leverage to drive down prices in 2024."

Weakness in demand for raw materials, components and commodities continued in November, although the global slump in purchasing activity did ease, primarily because of North America, which seems to be well past the peak of its manufacturing industry downturn. In fact, output and new orders at intermediate goods makers in the U.S. — which includes chemicals, metals, electronic components and electrical equipment manufacturers — improved in November.

On the other hand, Europe’s slump in demand remained severe, reflecting recessionary conditions. Capacity at Asia’s suppliers went underutilized to one of the greatest degrees in the post-pandemic era, boding ill for the near-term outlook of global manufacturing.

Slight improvements in global item supply, easing transport cost pressures and destocking, as seen in GEP’s November data, provide additional evidence of continuing weakness across the global economy.

NOVEMBER 2023 KEY FINDINGS

DEMAND: Weakness in demand for raw materials, components and commodities persisted in November, although, encouragingly, the downturn was its softest since April. Regional data revealed less aggressive cuts to purchasing by North American and Asian companies, but the decline in input demand remained considerable in Europe. INVENTORIES: Global businesses continue to demonstrate little appetite for building up their stocks, with inventory managers unwilling to hold surplus stock in warehouses. MATERIAL SHORTAGES: Reports of item shortages fell again in November and remained at their lowest since January 2020. LABOR SHORTAGES: Reports of backlogs accumulated because of labor unavailability remain historically subdued, showing that production capacities are not constrained by staff supply. TRANSPORTATION: Global transportation costs have stabilized and held close to the long-term average in November.

REGIONAL SUPPLY CHAIN VOLATILITY

NORTH AMERICA:  The index rose to -0.21, from -0.34, its highest level since April, and is now well below its low point of -0.85 in June, suggesting the manufacturing downturn has passed its peak in the U.S. EUROPE: The index rose to -0.85, from -0.90, but remains at a level consistent with significant economic weakness as recession looms for the continent. U.K.: A big increase in the index from -0.93 to -0.58 tentatively suggests the U.K.’s economy may fare better than some of its European peers, but the U.K.’s suppliers are still experiencing considerable spare capacity. ASIA: The index rose to -0.24, from -0.38. Nonetheless, this still highlighted one of the greatest degrees of vendor spare capacity in the post-pandemic era.

ABOUT THE GEP GLOBAL SUPPLY CHAIN VOLATILITY INDEX

The GEP Global Supply Chain Volatility Index is produced by S&P Global and GEP. It is derived from S&P Global’s PMI® surveys, sent to companies in over 40 countries, totaling around 27,000 companies. The headline figure is a weighted sum of six sub-indices derived from PMI data, PMI Comments Trackers and PMI Commodity Price & Supply Indicators compiled by S&P Global.

A value above 0 indicates that supply chain capacity is being stretched and supply chain volatility is increasing. The further above 0, the greater the extent to which capacity is being stretched. A value below 0 indicates that supply chain capacity is being underutilized, reducing supply chain volatility. The further below 0, the greater the extent to which capacity is being underutilized.

A Supply Chain Volatility Index is also published at a regional level for Europe, Asia, North America and the U.K. For more information about the methodology, click here.

The Chinese journey of a Kenyan acrobatic coach: Witnessing the friendship between the two countries

0

BEIJING, Dec. 14, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — A news report by China.org.cn on Mathias Kavita, a famous acrobatic artist and top coach in Kenya:

At the Sarakasi Dome arena in Nairobi, a not so spacious office is strewn with acrobatic props, with many of them featuring Chinese elements. Mathias Kavita, the owner of this office, is a famous acrobatic artist and top coach in Kenya. His journey in acrobatics began with a trip to China four decades ago.

Back in 1983, then 13-year-old Mathias was a budding gymnast in Kenya. At that time, he learned that the Chinese Embassy in Kenya, together with the Kenyan government, was selecting local children for acrobatic training in China. According to the agreement, the selected children would return to Kenya after completing the program, and participate in government-initiated acrobatic performances to introduce the art to more audiences. This news greatly enthused Mathias. After several rounds of auditions, he eventually got a ticket to train at the Guangzhou Acrobatics Art Troupe.

Mathias told the press, the school put in painstaking efforts. During the two years of training, they were assigned 16 acrobatics teachers.

The coaches were strict and determined about their training. Under their guidance, these Kenyan students, who had never learned acrobatics before, challenged their physical limits time and again, and managed to finish seemingly impossible moves. Mathias was especially grateful that the coaches had encouraged them to fuse an African touch in their acrobatic routines.

In 1985, these well-trained teenagers came back to Kenya, formed a national acrobatic troupe, and toured around the country. Other acrobats in Kenya were both amazed and shocked by the skills these young acrobats learned in China: Hoop diving, hand-stands on furniture, lion dances, and so on, so they started to imitate such stunts. And just like that, acrobatics became increasingly popular in Kenya. Today, Mathias’ performing troupe has also caught the eye of the international community.

Mathias and his fellows were not the only batch of acrobatic proteges. In 2002, China launched the "Training courses on acrobatics for developing countries" project, and since then, over 600 acrobatic learners from more than 20 countries, including Kenya, have benefited from the initiative. Among them, many came from impoverished households, and it was acrobatics that gave them the chance to transform their lives.

This year marks the 60th anniversary of China-Kenya diplomatic relations. Between the two countries, there are grand projects like the Mombasa–Nairobi Railway, and there are also people-to-people exchanges and cooperation that involve and benefit the ordinary. Besides the acrobatic stories, China’s men’s marathon team travels to Kenya, a successful distance-running nation, to learn and train almost every year; and on the environmental front, many young volunteers from China have been working with Kenyan locals, to work out a sustainable wildlife protection mode…

In the future, there will be more chapters writing such stories of friendship.

Dain Leaders Provides a Lively Practice Environment with 'HAIO', a VR Medical Education Contents

Interaction technology that can control emergency situations based on voice commands and joint recognition in HAIO

SEOUL, South Korea, Dec. 14, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — Dain Leaders, an edutech company, is expanding its scope of contents business to actively respond the increasing metaverse market demand and lead the digital transformation in the medical, educational, and public sectors.

Interaction technology that can control emergency situations based on voice commands and joint recognition in HAIO

Having provided learner-oriented education environment and unique learning contents utilizing VR contents since 2020, Dain Leaders signed license partner agreements for metaverse platform with Unity Korea and Unity Starter Editor. This way, Dain Leaders presents a new type of learning model of the future by providing VR/AR contents to the education/public sectors in Korea and establishing a contents creation ecosystem with learner and teacher participants.

Dain Leader’s major product, ‘HAIO (Hospital All In One)’ is a VR solution with voice recognition and hand tracking technologies tailored for contactless practice training at the medical and nursing colleges after the outbreak of COVID-19. The basic episode of HAIO is the CPR practice to save an unconscious drowning patient transferred to a hospital. Learners need to be able to respond to the emergency at the virtual emergency room where they can immerse themselves into the training environment replicating an actual hospital setting, which is different from the general training session at universities.

In the HAIO, virtual characters immediately react upon the participant’s order through voice recognition. The learners can join the drill to learn how to control the emergency in a simulated environment. They can control the situation by moving with hands instead of using a controller with recognition technology of hand joints, which frees them from putting on and off the HMD to learn and locate the controller buttons.

To be sure, theory is important but onsite experience is significantly important in the medical site. This requires enough training sessions, but it’s difficult to get sufficient clinical practice due to the human rights issue. The HAIO adds a mood of real-life places at hospitals into the medical training such as a virtual ER, which cannot be experienced in universities. In this regard, the HAIO is expected to be a perfect solution to make up for an offline practice environment which is a still unattainable in today’s training sessions.

Dain Leaders holds six patents related to VR and AR including user-location-based technology, hand tracking and voice recognition technologies, and it has engaged in technology development by participating in various government R&D contents projects. Currently, Dain Leaders mainly runs the hand-tracking-based VR contents for medical training and the motion-recognition-based AR mobile contents as its core business.

"For the HAIO, faculty members of medical and nursing colleges participated in the content’s development and medical major students evaluated and verified the solution; therefore, the training program complies with the accurate medical procedures and methods," said Changbae Lee, Head of Contents Business Division at Dain Leaders.
