Empower Her – ECW Executive Director Yasmine Sherif Statement on International Day of the Girl Child

Worldwide, 129 million girls are out of school, and less than half of countries have achieved parity in primary education.

NEW YORK, Oct. 11, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — Girls are the future. They are agents of positive change and potential in a world torn apart by conflicts and chaos. On this International Day of the Girl Child, Education Cannot Wait joins girls, women and people everywhere in calling for an end to the oppression of girls, an end to gender-based violence and sexual abuse, an end to child marriage, an end to unpaid work and an end to any form of subjugation. Our voices will not be silenced.

Worldwide, 129 million girls are out of school, and less than half of countries have achieved parity in primary education.

We must #EmpowerHer! With her power, we bring hope where there is fear, and strength where there is despair. Real empowerment starts with early childhood education and onwards through a pathway of a quality education. Education is foundational to ensuring the equal and inalienable rights of girls everywhere. With education, the girls of today will become tomorrow’s leaders. With education, girls will find sanctity and security in their homes and in their communities. With education, girls will bring us through the current trajectory of war, injustice, climate disasters, forced displacement and extreme poverty – lifting up their families, their communities and their nations, resulting in a more equal and humane world.

However, there are some terrifying, unacceptable statistics that tell a story of a world that has turned its back on girls and women. At the current rate, it will take 300 years to end child marriage, 286 years to close gaps in legal protection and remove discriminatory laws, and 140 years to achieve equal representation in leadership in the workplace, according to the United Nations. Today, one in five young women will be married before their 18th birthday.

Worldwide, 129 million girls are out of school, according to UNICEF, and less than half of countries have achieved parity in primary education. And, according to ECW’s Gender Implementation Guide, not only are girls’ learning outcomes behind those of boys in crisis-affected communities, but based on current trends, girls will not reach 100% lower secondary completion in crisis-affected countries until at least 2063.

On the frontlines of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, the situation is even worse. In Afghanistan today, 80% of Afghan girls are out of school – that’s 2.5 million girls denied their rights, denied their dignity, denied their humanity. In Niger, three out of four girls will be married before they are 18. And worldwide, as many as 150 million girls are raped or subject to sexual violence each year.

With an education, an educated girl, an educated woman, an educated sister, mother and wife contribute to transform the world. And it is urgently needed. We need a new world order based on equal rights and equal opportunity for all, without discrimination. Since its operationalization in 2017, Education Cannot Wait, as a vocal, global advocate for girls’ rights, has reached more than 4 million girls across 44 crisis-affected countries with the safety, hope and opportunity of quality, holistic education.

Together, we can and must do more. ECW calls on public and private sector donors worldwide to provide a total of US$1.5 billion in funding against our 2023-2026 Strategic Plan, which will reach 20 million children, of whom 60% are girls.

For proud and promising girls like Bisharo in Somalia, we are building safe learning spaces; for refugee girls like Josveglys in Colombia, we are overcoming mountains to ensure the continuity and quality of education; and, for girls like Bchiote, who have lived through hunger and fear on their journeys from the Democratic Republic of the Congo to Uganda and on to Ethiopia, we are helping reignite dreams, reunite families, and reimagine our global promise of gender equality and empowerment. Through quality education, we can change the world by #EmpoweringHer.

This year, at the Hangzhou Asian Games, e-sports has been included as an official competition, attracting attention from the entire gaming industry and society at large.  As e-sports continues to gain traction in the global entertainment industry, it has sparked rapid growth in related industries and hardware technologies. Global Sources recognizes this trend and has strategically introduced a dedicated gaming and e-sports hall at the Consumer Electronics show. Located in Hall 2, it showcases a comprehensive range of gaming consoles and accessories, e-sports equipment, VR gaming equipment, home entertainment products, and more. In addition to emerging industries, the quality and functions of traditional audio products are constantly innovating and upgrading. The more than 600 booths in the audio product exhibition area at Global Sources Consumer Electronics feature excellent-quality audio products that excel in terms of technology, design, and user experience, including headphones, Bluetooth speakers, professional-use audio products, home audio systems, wires and accessories. Among these, OWS (Open Wearable Stereo) type headphones are set to make a big impression. This solution, which does not send sound waves through the wearer’s bones but through the air to obtain a more natural listening experience, compared to the traditional in-ear wearable listening solutions, offers a better user experience and has attracted the keen attention and pursuit of on-site buyers.

Outdoor Electronic Products Stay Hot

Since the pandemic, people’s enthusiasm for outdoor activities has continued to rise. Coupled with the formation of the "micro-travel" ecology, the outdoor electronics exhibition area in Hall 3 is a welcome feature of the show for many buyers. This exhibition area has 300 booths, featuring portable audio and video products with excellent mobility, personal transportation and entertainment systems, as well as professional outdoor camping equipment. There are also e-bikes, skateboards, children’s entertainment, water entertainment products and more. The area includes up a personal transporter test-drive zone for product trials and demonstrations.

Mouser Electronics Highlights the Technologies and Applications for Environmental Sensors in the Latest Empowering Innovation Together

0

SHANGHAI, Oct. 11, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — Mouser Electronics Inc., the industry’s leading New Product Introduction (NPI) distributor with the widest selection of semiconductors and electronic components™, unveils the next installment of its award-winning Empowering Innovation Together series today, spotlighting the need for environmental sensors. Mouser examines the technology and applications behind environmental sensors and how they are used in creating indoor air quality monitoring solutions through a technical content stream of articles, blogs, videos, and the latest podcast episode of The Tech Between Us.

Environmental sensors have become more popular among employers looking to improve air quality inside the workplace, bolstered at least in part by the pandemic and the demand for clean indoor air, and the sensors to track potential hazards By monitoring pollutants, particulates, and hazardous gasses in real time, employers can more easily address potential threats to employee health and productivity. Poor indoor air quality has been linked to a variety of short-term ailments, such as headaches, fatigue and difficulty concentrating. With no federal standards regarding indoor air quality, employers are taking responsibility for monitoring their environments and providing clean air to employees. Mouser explores how environmental sensors offer an efficient way of doing so, allowing accurate readings that can be easily monitored over time to provide the data companies need.

"Environmental sensors can play an important role in keeping the air we breathe in our workplace clean. That’s why Mouser is excited to share this informative EIT installment centered around this topic," says Raymond Yin, Technical Content Director at Mouser Electronics. "Through this initiative, we aim to empower engineers with the knowledge they need to find solutions for improving indoor air quality."

This series includes the latest installment of The Tech Between Us podcast, hosted by Yin. He is joined by Ronan Cooney, Head of Product at Ambisense, to discuss the current landscape of indoor air quality compared to outdoor air quality. They also review the major contributors to poor air quality, regulations, and design considerations for air quality measurement devices. Additionally, the episode maps out Mouser’s environmental sensor selections and the considerations needed when designing for specific applications.

Mouser’s variety of articles, infographics and videos offer an in-depth overview of environmental sensors, the risks associated with poor indoor air quality, the exploration of sensor selection for improving indoor air quality (IAQ) and choosing the right volatile organic compound (VOC) sensors. This EIT installment is sponsored by Mouser’s valued partners Amphenol, TE Connectivity, Honeywell, Renesas, Sensirion, and Bosch.

Electromobility: Exyte to build state-of-the-art dry room for Volkswagen's first ever battery cell gigafactory

0

Exyte is set to build the dry room for Volkswagen’s battery cell gigafactory in Salzgitter, Germany Exyte is responsible for design, procurement, construction and commissioning of the dry room Control of the manufacturing environment is technically demanding and critical to product quality Exyte CEO Büchele: "Receiving this contract is an achievement of strategic relevance for Exyte."

STUTTGART, Germany, Oct. 11, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — Exyte, a global leader in the design, engineering, and delivery of high-tech facilities, continues its support of the global journey towards sustainability as the company is set to be building a state-of-the-art dry room for Volkswagen in Salzgitter, Germany. The dry room will be located within Volkswagen’s battery cell gigafactory, currently being built at the site in Salzgitter. It will occupy an area of five soccer fields.

Volkswagen’s first Group-owned battery cell factory is being built in Salzgitter. From 2025, unit cells for the volume segment will be produced there, and the cell factory will prospectively have an annual capacity of 40 GWh – sufficient for around 500,000 electric vehicles.

"Receiving this contract is an achievement of strategic relevance for Exyte and demonstrates the trust world-class companies have in our ability to deliver top-tier projects. We are enthusiastic about contributing to the European automotive sector’s transition to sustainable mobility," says Exyte CEO Dr. Wolfgang Büchele.

Exyte sees great potential in the design and build approach for projects for battery cell gigafactories including dry rooms. According to expert estimates, up to 150 gigafactories will be built worldwide in the coming years. In Europe alone, 30 gigafactories are currently being planned to enable electromobility to ramp up. "The design and construction of battery cell production facilities is a business area that will continue to develop positively, putting Exyte in an ideal position to create more opportunities to grow profitably in the future," Büchele says.

Dry room is vital for battery cell production

In Salzgitter, Exyte is responsible for the detailed design, procurement, construction and commissioning of the required dry room including the exhaust treatment and particle monitoring for increased operator safety. Battery cell production requires a clean and dry environment which needs to be strictly monitored and controlled, and the dry room is central to this. Aspects such as humidity and particle contamination must be kept at a minimum as they can impact the quality and reliability of the battery cells produced. "Designing and constructing a large-scale production area that can consistently provide an atmosphere with close to zero percent relative humidity, among other parameters, is nothing short of an engineering feat and one which Exyte excels at," says Mark Garvey, President of Exyte’s Global Business Unit Advanced Technology Facilities.

With a vast experience in delivering semiconductor fabs globally for over half a century, and having had already designed and built a gigafactory with what is currently the largest dry room in Europe, Exyte has a proven track record and the profound expertise to successfully execute the project in Salzgitter. Garvey comments: "This is another significant milestone not just for Exyte but also for our client as both companies are committed to supporting the rising megatrend of electromobility for a more sustainable automotive industry."

Salzgitter’s a blueprint for Volkswagen’s global expansion

The new plant in Salzgitter will act as the blueprint and a prelude to Volkswagen’s plan to expand the electric vehicle battery cell production capabilities across Europe and North America. Until 2030, Volkswagen plans to invest over 20 billion euro in the development of the battery business to generate over 20 billion euro in annual sales and create up to 20,000 jobs in Europe alone. Both Valencia, Spain, and Ontario, Canada, have already been announced as the locations for their next gigafactories.

Kintor Pharma Announces the Approval for Phase II Clinical Trial of Hedgehog/SMO Inhibitor GT1708F for Treatment of IPF in China

0

SUZHOU, China, Oct. 11, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — Kintor Pharmaceutical Limited ("Kintor Pharma", HKEX: 9939), a clinical-stage biotechnology company developing innovative small molecule and biological therapeutics, today announced that its Hedgehog/SMO inhibitor GT1708F had obtained conditional approval to conduct Phase II clinical trial in China by the National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) for treatment of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF).

IPF is a chronic, progressive fibrosing interstitial pneumonia and one of the most fatal interstitial pneumonias. The incidence of IPF is high, but due to the relatively unnoticeable onset and progression, most patients are diagnosed in the moderate and advanced stages, and the median survival time of patients from the time of diagnosis is only 3~5 years[1]. There are currently no effective therapies that can be used to stop the fibrosis process of IPF or cure the disease, and no new drugs for treating IPF have been approved in the past decade. There is a huge unmet clinical need. Currently, there are no Hedgehog/SMO inhibitors for IPF indication in the clinical stage in China, and the most advanced drug overseas for the same target is ENV-101 (Taladegib), which is conducting a Phase II clinical study for IPF indication. ENV-101 was in-licensed from Roche by Endeavor BioMedicines, which has received multiple rounds of financing for the development and advancement of the drug, showing the potential and market acknowledgment of Hedgehog/SMO inhibitors for treating IPF.

The latest research and clinical results show that the Hedgehog signaling pathway plays an important role in the pathogenesis of IPF. GT1708F is a highly active and specific inhibitor of SMO protein, which inhibits the activity of SMO protein to affect the activity of the Hedgehog pathway and the expression of its downstream related proteins, thereby treating IPF.

Previously, GT1708F completed the Phase I clinical trial in China for hematologic malignancies. The results showed that the GT1708F demonstrated good safety and tolerability, with no dose-limiting toxicity (DLT) and drug-related serious adverse events (SAEs) in patients.
