DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, Dec. 6, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — Wei Xue, Vice President of TCL Technology and Chairman of the TCL Charity Foundation, represented the company as a keynote speaker at a side event on 4 December, focused on the role of sustainable development in addressing climate change, during the 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP28), currently taking place in Dubai, United Arab Emirates until 12 December.

Three key principles of TCL’s climate response strategy

Held in the Blue Zone at COP28, the event explored green financial solutions in tackling climate change and facilitating sustainable development. Joining representatives from fellow global companies, Wei outlined three guiding principles of TCL’s long-term and holistic strategy on climate action and green development during her speech.

"The first principle is to uphold a comprehensive and customized response strategy," shared Wei. Over the years, TCL has been elevating its ESG management system, adding non-financial indicators to strategically cover relevant departments of the company and the industrial chain, alongside clearly set and frequently reviewed goals and plans to ensure carbon neutrality in its operations by 2050. Last year, TCL also launched the global TCLGreen campaign to support efforts to create a greener planet for all.

Secondly, TCL is proactive in establishing ecological partnerships with its various stakeholders. "We are not only strengthening our own actions, but also urging research institutions, non-governmental organizations, and individuals, particularly students and youth, to collectively take on responsibilities," added Wei. On this front, TCL inaugurated the "TCL Solar Low-Carbon Campus" through social value investing in September this year, facilitating green power generation in a high school in Inner Mongolia while introducing renewable energy education among students.

Thirdly, Wei encouraged cooperation and value co-creation in driving sustainable industry development, as stakeholders pool resources and leverage individual strengths, expertise and networks. Through continuous innovation, TCL has assisted over 50 factories in 12 industries to date in achieving intelligent management of energy systems, allowing them to reduce approximately 150,000 tons of carbon altogether.

Reflections from TCL’s journey of green transformation

New ECW Acceleration Facility grant, delivered by the Global Survivors Fund, will provide quality education as a form of reparation for survivors of Boko Haram’s conflict-related sexual violence and children born of war in Nigeria.

NEW YORK, Dec. 6, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — In northeast Nigeria, fourteen years of violence by the insurgency group Boko Haram has left a painful and lasting mark on the childhoods, safety and education of countless girls and women, with schools and family homes being regularly targeted by attacks and mass kidnappings.

To support the learning and wellbeing of survivors of conflict-related sexual violence and children born of war in this region, Education Cannot Wait (ECW) announced today a US$325,000 grant to the Global Survivors Fund (GSF). This 12-month Acceleration Facility grant will reach survivors, as well as their children and families, in states affected by Boko Haram’s violence and support their access to holistic, quality education.

After their release or escape, Boko Haram survivors experience revictimization and stigmatization in their communities. They’re often viewed as tainted, or labeled "Boko Haram wives" and assumed to carry the ideologies of the insurgent group. Their children are also cast off, and not allowed to associate with other children. Every part of their lives – social, educational and economic – is severely disrupted.

Through all of this, education stands as a right and form of reparation which can enable these women and girls to reintegrate in society, build life skills and transform their futures. As well as supporting their academic journeys, this new grant will also ensure survivors have regular visits with mental health and psychosocial support case workers, supporting their psychological – as well as their social and academic – recovery.

This investment demonstrates ECW’s commitment to reaching those left furthest behind in crises, and is also in line with the Fund’s gender transformative approach to education in emergencies and protracted crises and localisation agenda. GSF will directly implement the initiative in Nigeria, in partnership with two local organizations – the Centre for Girl Child Education and the Youth Initiative Against Terrorism.

ECW’s Acceleration Facility funding mechanism is dedicated to supporting the creation of global public goods and resources for the education in emergencies sector. Carbon data provider and exchange collaborate to launch a standardized contract of highly-rated carbon credits, promoting quality in the market. The credits will be available for trading on ACX’s exchange. It is the first step in the partnership as the two companies team up to bring further transparency and improve accessibility in carbon credit trading.

Purchasing carbon credits, which fund projects around the world like protecting rainforests from deforestation or degradation, is one of the most established and scalable ways to channel finance to effective climate outcomes. ACX’s SYLVERA ‘A’ Nature Tonne (SAN) contract accepts only carbon credits from Sylvera’s highest-rated projects — A and above (AA & AAA) with co-benefits score of three and above — giving buyers confidence that they are investing in credits high in environmental integrity. In addition, the contract ensures projects comply with social and environmental safeguards, reducing complexities and simplifying decision-making in the trading process. The nature-based carbon credits will be from REDD+, Afforestation, Reforestation, and Restoration (ARR), and Improved Forest Management (IFM) projects of all vintages.

The partnership comes at a critical juncture for carbon credits. As targets for net zero reach ever closer, the carbon markets are poised for significant growth, with some estimating it will reach $250bn by 2030. However, investors need robust, unconflicted information and accurate impact assessment of these carbon credits. This standardized contract is a first of its kind, giving buyers a scalable way to access high-quality carbon credits. Assessed against Sylvera’s rigorous project evaluation methodologies and cutting-edge technology and held by a secure and regulated exchange, buyers can direct more funding to the projects having maximum climate impact.

The collaboration is the first step in the partnership between the two companies to build innovative solutions that increase transparency and drive simplicity in carbon trading.
