Founder and CEO of the Red Dot Award Professor Dr. Peter Zec, Vice President of the Red Dot Award Vito Oražem, Asia President of Red Dot, and three of international jurors were invited to attend the opening ceremony.

Professor Dr. Peter Zec, Founder and CEO of the Red Dot Award, and Ph.D Hongmei Lin, Member of the Party Committee and Vice President of Xiamen Media Group Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairman of Xiamen Culture Media Group delivered opening speeches and shared their insights.

In 2012, Red Dot was introduced to Xiamen. So far, Red Dot Design Museum Xiamen has made important contributions to the introduction of world-class design thinking to China and the promotion of scientific and technological innovation and development. In 2018, the third in the world and the one and only Red Dot Design Museum in China settled in airport Terminal 2 in Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport, which gradually became a hub connecting international design and Chinese design. In 2021, the temporary Red Dot Design Museum Xiamen was moved to Xiamen Fliport Convention and Exhibition Center. In 2023, the Red Dot Design Museum Xiamen officially reopened in Jimei CBD, ushering in a new future.

Over the years, Red Dot Design Museum Xiamen has introduced more than 30 international professional exhibitions, attracted nearly 400,000 visitors, completed more than 500 professional events, gathered 600 global brand products, and provided training courses for more than 7,000 people…

Red Dot Design Museum Xiamen presents the top level of design in various fields and the innovation of designers and design teams at multiple levels through high-quality international design exhibitions, forward-looking design trends and exploration discussions, and public education projects with advanced concepts. It provides professional support and cooperation platform for design creation practice and leads the audience into the diverse design world.

Red Dot Design Museum Xiamen is committed to becoming a global design business watchtower, stimulating the creativity of local designers, and bringing good design closer to life. On the occasion of the fifth anniversary, we look back on our achievements, and look forward to the future of the new museum for creating unlimited possibilities for design.

Creating a non-standard, multi-purpose museum

What does the new Red Dot Design Museum Xiamen look like?

Is it a composite functional design museum integrating exhibitions, professional learning, parent-child leisure, buyer-type design department store?

Is it a diversified consumption scenario and 1+N diversified lifestyle testing ground covering the entire population with design as the core?

Or is it a dialogue bridge for exploring the relationship between design and craftsmanship, design and art, design and commerce, design and innovation, and design and society?

In order to create an immersive viewing experience, in the design of the new museum, the designer tried to blur the boundaries between exhibition hall space and non-exhibition hall space. By arranging window display spaces on both sides of the visiting circulation line, the designers gave the corridor space and retail space exhibition attributes.

In addition, the new museum design uses scaffolding, cabinets and other installation and product elements to replace conventional solid walls as flexible exhibition hall boundaries, making visitors feel as if they were in a complete, continuous and changing large exhibition hall.

The red atrium staircase serves as the core of the space, with different functional areas such as exhibition halls, retail, and catering around it. It is both an abstract symbol of the Red Dot brand and a symbol of design power, deriving a world of design.

Andy Warhol once predicted: "All department stores will become museums, and all museums will become department stores." Red Dot Design Museum Xiamen allows design to truly enter the lives of the general public, leading them to appreciate the value and charm of design. No matter you are a mere enthusiast, or an ordinary people with zero background in design, you can find a door to design art here.

5th Anniversary Design Salon

"In today’s harsh and competitive marketplace, we as designers need to think – and do even a little bit of everything – to advance and change the relationship between design and manufacturing, and industry, and the environment."

——Honorary Director of Red Dot Design Museum Xiamen

Prof. Cai Jun

Rather than a straight-forward expression of innovative idea, design is an internalized presentation of the designers’ in-depth reflection on lives.

On the afternoon of 28th, a large number of guests gathered at the event site of "Live Design Talk: ACCOMPANIED BY GOOD DESIGN", the 5th Anniversary Design Salon of Red Dot Design Museum Xiamen. International jurors Prof. Cai Jun, Dirk Schumann and Dr. Joseph Francis Wong focused on the three major design issues of science, humanities, and society, and talked with CGD award-winning designers, representatives of famous brands, and design media on the scene of the salon, discussing and interacting with each other, and opening up a "brainstorming" about the future development of design.

Global Times: Xinjiang becomes bridgehead in westward opening-up, embraces boundless development opportunities

0

BEIJING, Dec. 5, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — "Xinjiang is a wonderful land!" This was the feeling shared by every Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Forum "Year of Tourism 2023" participant. It not only marks the first tourism-themed forum to be held by the SCO, but also the first time the Xinjiang regional government has served as a co-organizer of such a large-scale international forum.

The successful hosting of the four-day forum proves that, while riding the wind of China’s westward opening-up strategy, Xinjiang has stepped onto the fast lane of development and become a leader in China’s westward opening-up.

As concluded by Xu Guixiang, the spokesperson of the Xinjiang regional government, on the sidelines of the SCO forum, 2023 has been a year of high-level visits, marking substantial progress in Xinjiang’s opening-up to the world.

Since the beginning of this year, Xinjiang officials have visited the five Central Asian countries, holding meetings with officials from those countries, and achieving a series of practical results. This has sent a strong signal that Xinjiang’s opening-up to the world is expanding. Officials from these countries have also visited Xinjiang to discuss friendly exchanges and practical cooperation, according to Xu.

Along with intensive exchanges, Xinjiang’s opening-up to and cooperation with the outside world has ushered in new opportunities, including in the tourism industry.

According to Xu, from January to September this year, Xinjiang achieved regional GDP 1.355 trillion yuan ($189.6 billion), a year-on-year increase of 6.1 percent. From January to October, Xinjiang received 243 million domestic and foreign tourists, a year-on-year increase of 101.38 percent, amassing a total tourism revenue of 270.378 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 200.67 percent – a record high.

"It is the right time to hold the forum in Xinjiang. I believe it is a correct choice," SCO Secretary-General Zhang Ming told the media during the forum.

Explaining why Urumqi was chosen to host the forum, Zhang noted that, firstly, Xinjiang has unique geographical advantages as it borders eight countries, which provides great convenience for regional exchanges and cooperation. Secondly, Xinjiang has the advantage of cultural tourism, with its rich and diverse cultural and tourism resources covering various aspects. Thirdly, Xinjiang’s people from all walks of life and the local government have an active and open attitude and a passion for SCO cooperation participation.

A bridgehead

Located in the Northwest China, Xinjiang is the largest provincial-level region in China in terms of land area. Its land comprises one-sixth of China’s land territory, which is nearly three times the size of France. The region also possesses abundant natural beauty and breathtaking landscapes including vast deserts, mountains, and grasslands.

Due to its unique location, the Xinjiang region has been the center of economic activities and connectivity hub between China, Afghanistan, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, and Pakistan. It has also been dubbed the heart of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

The uniqueness of Xinjiang lies in its close geographical proximity to Central Asia, as well as its similarities in climate, culture, and historical connections with Central Asia. The region also has abundant natural resources, holds immense potential in cross-border trade, and harbors impressive transportation and logistics capabilities. Through years of development, a modern Xinjiang has shown its neighbors that it can maintain internal political stability while experiencing rapid socio-economic growth, which has attracted more and more cooperation partners and investors, experts pointed out.

Along with the country’s implementation of the westward opening-up strategy, Xinjiang is embracing a rare opportunity, helped by special policy support for its development such as the Xinjiang Pilot Free Trade Zone (FTZ), Xu told the Global Times during the forum.

"Xinjiang must firmly seize this rare opportunity and make significant contributions. We also believe that with the implementation of the westward opening-up strategy, Xinjiang, as a pioneer in the BRI, will play a greater role," Xu noted.

On November 1, Xinjiang FTZ was established. Three areas were included in the 179.66-square-kilometers FTZ, including the regional capital of Urumqi, Kashi prefecture, and Horgos. It is the first such zone in China’s Northwest border region and the 22nd pilot FTZ in China.

When talking about how to achieve higher quality development in the Xinjiang tourism sector, Zhang Ming believes that Xinjiang must stick to the strategy of opening-up.

Xinjiang has abundant natural, tourism, and talent resources. The people of Xinjiang enjoy a peaceful, stable, and happy life, indispensable elements to and foundations for economic development and cultural exchanges. The region has to make full use of these rich elements and foundations.

"Economic development cannot be achieved by closing the door and developing on its own, and cultural exchanges cannot be achieved by closing the door and communicating on its own. We must open up. I think this is an important way for Xinjiang to utilize its own advantages and move toward high-quality development," Zhang noted.

Stick to opening-up

Over the past decade Xinjiang has opened up wider and made closer international connections.

According to the data provided by the regional government, Xinjiang has opened 118 bilateral international road transport routes, the highway between the region and Europe has been fully connected and the second railway with Kazakhstan has been completed and made operational.

As of the end of August, there have been 70,000 trains passing through Xinjiang along the China-Europe (Central Asia) freight train route, accounting for over 57 percent of the national total. There have been 8,024 international freight trains departing from Xinjiang, with an average annual growth rate of 50.4 percent.

This year also witnessed intensified efforts to "go global and invite in." Party and government leaders in the region have held multiple meetings with foreign guests, received delegations from over 50 countries, and reached a series of cooperation agreements in multiple fields, expanding new space for international exchanges and cooperation.

Xinjiang has also strengthened cooperation with Hong Kong and Macao, as well as signed strategic cooperation agreements with other provinces and regions such as Gansu, Qinghai, Ningxia, and the Xizang Autonomous Region, jointly promoting westward opening up.

Xinjiang’s development and the eagerness to open up is obvious to the whole world. "I am always looking forward to visiting Xinjiang, to visiting Kashi, and I am so happy that I got the chance to come to the city this time. I have experienced the local vibe, local food, local dances, and local music," SCO Deputy Secretary General Janesh Kane told the Global Times during a group visit to Kashi on November 25 following the SCO tourism forum.

Kane said he was full of confidence in Xinjiang’s tourism industry. He believed that after the tourism forum, there would be more tourists from SCO member countries to Xinjiang and more investment to Xinjiang.

Raushan Shamili, president of the Tumar-Trans international tour operator and transport company located in Almaty, Kazakhstan, was also among the delegation to Kashi. "’If you have not been to Kashi, you have not been to Xinjiang yet.’ This time I witnessed a developing Kashi with high-quality local companies and internationalized transportation channels. I hope China and Kazakhstan can reach more cooperation agreements after the forum," she told the Global Times.

Professor Cho, Byoung Chul, poster presentation of Phase 12 study of its Novel Oral 4th Generation EGFR-TKI ‘JIN-A02’ at the European Society for Medical Oncology Asia in Singapore (ESMO Asia 2023)

‘JIN-A02’, a 4th generation EGFR-TKI, is a substance that selectively binds to C797S, a mutation that leads to resistance to 3rd generation EGFR-TKIs (Osimertinib, Lazertinib), a treatment for EGFR+ NSCLC. It has demonstrated strong efficacy in preclinical studies, and the results have already been presented at several academic conferences.

Currently, the company is conducting a global phase 1/2 clinical study to evaluate the safety, pharmacokinetics, and anti-tumor activity of "JIN-A02" in patients with advanced NSCLC carrying EGFR mutations.

During ESMO Asia, the safety and PK results for the first two cohorts of patients recruited in Part A (Dose Escalation) of the clinical study were presented. To-date, no dose limiting toxicities (DLTs) or maximum tolerated dose (MTD) were reported and dosing for the 3rd cohort of patients will begin very soon.

According to J INTS BIO, the clinical study is progressing well and recruitment has been unexpectedly successful with no unnecessary delays between the cohorts. The company also noted that further dose escalations will allow a robust evaluation of the anti-tumor effects of ‘JIN-A02’, and enable the assessment of its overall safety.

Global Times: 'China hands' share their stories, insights on China's path

0

BEIJING, Dec. 5, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — The recent World Conference on China Studies – Shanghai Forum, which concluded on November 24, was one of the largest gatherings of global "China hands." At the two-day forum, more than 400 Chinese and foreign scholars specializing or interested in China studies discussed their insights on Chinese civilization and China’s path of development, as well as their impacts on the current global landscape.

During the forum, some of the overseas scholars, including winners of the 2023 Award for Distinguished Contributions to China Studies, shared their personal China experiences, observations, and understandings of Chinese civilization and China’s path with the Global Times.

These "China hands" are witnesses to China’s modernization and social development, and play an important role as bridges that link China and the world, observers told the Global Times on Monday.

Witnesses and bridges

The forum announced the winners of the 2023 Award for Distinguished Contributions to China Studies on November 24. They included Timothy Brook, professor emeritus at Department of History, University of British Columbia, Baik Young-seo, professor emeritus at Yonsei University, and Kishore Mahbubani, distinguished fellow at the Asia Research Institute, National University of Singapore.

Brook and Baik participated in the in-person forum in Shanghai. At an interview on November 23, Brook said that Shanghai "makes him jump." "The Shanghai of today is completely different from that of the 1970s," he told the media in fluent Putonghua. "The city reminds me of New York when I look out of my hotel at the Bund."

Shanghai was one of the starting places that sparked Brook’s relationship with China. In 1974, then 23-year-old Brook studied ancient Chinese history and literature at Fudan University as one of the earliest young Canadians to come to China as exchange students. At Fudan, he developed a keen interest in China’s Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), and later started his decades of research in Chinese history, particularly into the Ming Dynasty history.

At the forum venue by the Huangpu River, Brook said although he has visited Shanghai many times over the years, he is quite impressed by the development of China’s most modernized metropolis during each visit. "I found that Shanghai has ‘grown up’ to a degree that I’ve never seen before," he said, as if describing an old friend.

Brook is hailed as one of the best storytellers among North American historians. His many books focusing on China during the period of the Ming Dynasty, such as The Confusions of Pleasure: Commerce and Culture in Ming China, open a window for international readers to learn more about Chinese history and civilization.

"I keep writing books about China in order to increase the outside world’s understanding of China," Brook told the Global Times.

Brook is among the expanding pool of international scholars in China studies who have, in recent decades, personally experienced China’s rapid path to development.
Rachel Murphy, who prefers to go by her Chinese name "Rui Xue (auspicious snow in a literal translation)" in China, was a guest speaker at the forum. As a Chinese Development and Society professor at the University of Oxford and former president of the British Association for Chinese Studies, she has been engaged in China-related research, exploring China’s social and cultural changes caused by urbanization, educational development, demographic transition, and state policies.

During the last 20 years, Murphy has travelled to many villages, towns, and cities across China. Her long-term fieldwork makes her an old "China hand."

Murphy marveled at China’s tremendous development, especially in the countryside. "China’s urbanization is progressing very fast," she told the Global Times during the forum. "The book I wrote [about rural China] before is out of date now."

Murphy shared that a week ahead of the forum, she visited several villages in Anhui Provinces, where she had been to a few years before. She was surprised by the great changes in communication in rural China.

Wi-Fi availability is now commonplace in many villages, enabling "left-behind" children to stay in contact with their migrant worker parents through frequent video calls, said Murphy. She was surprised to see many elderly women like to share their rural lives on Douyin (the Chinese version of TikTok).

"The speed of technological changes [in China] is truly amazing," Murphy said in Putonghua. "Rural areas included, the ubiquitous nature of ‘connection’ [across China] is a remarkable achievement."

Among the China studies scholars who attended the forum in Shanghai, Michael Crook, a Chinese Government Friendship Award winner, is a familiar "China hand" to many Chinese people.

Crook’s family has been profoundly and closely connected to China. Six generations of his family have worked and lived in China. Born and raised in Beijing, Crook has devoted decades to education in China. Now he teaches children from expatriate families in Beijing Chinese history and culture, acting as a bridge between people in China and the West, especially among the younger generation.

During the forum, Crook told Chinese media that he believes Chinese and Western cultures have their own merits. "They can learn from each other," he said.

A path worthy of reference

Crook was a guest speaker at a sub-forum being held during the Shanghai Forum on November 24. The theme of the sub-forum was "Explorations: Chinese Modernization and China’s Path."

Under this theme, many participants of the sub-forum shared their understanding of China’s path to modernization, and some highlights of China’s path worthy of reference for other countries.

China is a good example of integrating its own development with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNDGs), said economist Ranee Jayamaha, lead consultant for the South Asia-World Bank Group.

She offered how China has launched the Initiative for Belt and Road Partnership on Green Development together with 31 countries, and closely aligned the initiative with the needs of global green development by investing in renewable energy and adopting comprehensive pollution reduction measures as an example.

This is a good story of China’s success in positively influencing world development, Jayamaha commented.

Crook mentioned China’s ethnic policies, which he thinks can be referenced by multi-ethnic countries.

In a speech he delivered at the sub-forum, Crook recalled his visit to a school in China’s Xizang Autonomous Region in May. The school teaches both Putonghua and Tibetan, and entirely permissible for the latter to be spoken in class. The small case shows China respects and supports its ethnic minorities at the national level, said Crook.

With China’s rise and its growing international influence, many countries, especially those in the Global South, are interested in Chine’s development, and are looking forward to learning from China’s experiences, many attendees of the forum told the Global Times.

And these contemporary "China hands" are making efforts to know more about China, exploring China’s development path and sharing their observations and understandings with the world.

China is on a multi-dimensional path of development, Josette Altmann-Borbón, secretary general of Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences, said in a speech delivered at the forum’s opening ceremony on November 24.

We should fully understand the important role China plays on the global stage, she noted.

Global Times: Night school boom reflects Chinese youth's pursuit of personal fulfillment, defying 'lying flat' narrative

0

BEIJING, Dec. 5, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — Working during the day and acquiring new skills at night is becoming a new way of life for young people in China. From dancing to vocal training, from traditional handicrafts, beauty, and fitness classes, to wine tasting and vlog filming, the list of possibilities for new learning experiences is seemingly limitless.

These diverse options, cost-effectiveness, and highly qualified teachers have made "night school," a concept that used to carry a sense of nostalgia in China, popular once more, especially among China’s younger generation.

This trend first started in Shanghai. During the enrollment of the  Citizen Night School for Arts for the autumn semester in September, more than 650,000 people competed for 10,000 course spots, causing the enrollment platform to crash. Then, in a short period of time, the night school trend spread across China.

Night schools hold a special place in the memories of many Chinese people. From literacy classes after the establishment of the People’s Republic of China to evening lectures at universities in the 1980s, generations of young people have, for decades, attended night school to supplement their cultural and technical knowledge.

However, the current wave of young people enrolling in night schools is driven more by their interests, with the aim of enriching their personal, spiritual, and cultural fulfillment.

Observers have pointed out that the night school boom is in line with the current economic situation and young people’s living conditions.

Unlike some Western media portrayals of Chinese young people’s "lying flat" mindset under work pressure, attending night schools reflects the diversified growth needs of Chinese youth.

"In a stable economic and social situation, the popularity of night classes is a very common situation as many young people can afford them and have leisure time to attend classes they like, and more importantly, seek to improve their cultural knowledge and mental outlook," Zhang Yiwu, a Chinese language and literature professor at Peking University, told the Global Times.

A new nightlife

"Like light, full of anticipation, night school may be the first time our generation has actively developed interests that are non-utilitarian," said Xu Lili, a 27-year-old advertisement planner in Beijing.

Xu told the Global Times that she spent an entire weekend carefully selecting night school institutions and courses on Little Red Book (Xiaohongshu), a popular lifestyle sharing social media platform in China, before actually attending classes. Finally, she chose a street dance class that was close to her workplace, taught by a graduate from the Beijing Dance Academy. The course cost 700 yuan ($98) for 10 classes and was transferable to friends.

"After experiencing the course, I felt it was really good. The atmosphere was great, and I’ve made many new friends here," Xu said. "We are also discussing taking Chinese pastry baking and drama appreciation classes together next."

Far from the relatively arduous matriculation process during school days, Xu said that for her, learning about art allows her to temporarily escape from the stresses of her job.

Xu said she did not have any specific expectations for her learning outcomes, but rather wants to try a wide range of courses and find a hobby that can provide her with personal satisfaction.

"Night school allows me to find my passion with minimal cost and also helps me realize that there are more interesting friends and a life beyond work," Xu said.

Chinese people have always had a strong thirst for knowledge. But currently, attending night school now is very different from the nationwide night school craze in the early 1980s. Nowadays, attending night school reflects the diversified growth needs of the contemporary youth.

"It is completely driven by interests, with the aim of enriching our spiritual and cultural lives," Xu said.

In Professor Zhang Yiwu’s views, the popularity of night class is one of the best examples, which can dispel the notion that young people in China are "lying flat" for a purposeless life, as portrayed by some Western media outlets.

He noted that in Chinese society, a large portion of young people have enough income to meet basic survival needs and have enough left over to focus on their interests. They don’t necessarily have to work extremely hard to earn a stable income, which allows them to easily afford night school or other forms of self-improvement.

In China, there are diverse lifestyle choices that can support both personal growth and a fulfilling leisure life, Zhang pointed out.

"The desire for self-improvement and enrichment is strong among the younger generation, and it extends beyond work. There is a significant proportion of young people who are able to maintain a good living in society and still have time to pursue interests. This phenomenon of enhancing personal development is not surprising and is a natural result of social progress," he said.

A communication channel

"From the beginning, I was worried that the night school courses in a second-tier city would not attract enough people and might not be able to run. But the reality proved that I was overly concerned," Zheng Lifu, who transformed his art training center into a night school in Fuzhou, East China’s Fujian Province, told the Global Times.

Just three days after Zheng posted enrollment information for courses at the night school on Xiaohongshu, he received over 300 private messages inquiring about the courses. Within a week, he had successfully opened classes for Guqin and jazz dance, attracting more than 100 participants.

"The demand for young people today to reconstruct their cultural lives and cultivate their interests after work is real," Zheng said.

Currently, Zheng is expanding his night school business further. "The courses are in high demand overall, and we are further assessing the intentions of the students and planning to recruit new qualified teachers to launch more popular courses," he said, noting that his institution aims to provide inclusive entry-level courses while also creating advanced courses to meet the needs of students who want to further enhance their skills.

The Global Times has found that there are roughly three types of night school operation modes currently available on the market. The first type is night schools with official backgrounds, which are established through the coordination of local governments, community organizations, village committees, and training institutions. The second is night schools initiated by training institutions, similar to Zheng’s, which offer affordable introductory courses and target long-term course applicants. The third is night schools run by individuals or teams who act as intermediaries, connecting students with institutions and earning a portion of the enrollment fee. All of these operating models are striving to achieve precise alignment with the knowledge demands of young people.

"There are two types of content that easily attract attention on social platforms: ‘Where to go after work’ and ‘Where to go at weekends’" Kevin Wang, a 32-year-old finance industry worker in Shanghai, has devoted all his free time to operating his self-developed community platform Weekend Charging. This young offline social platform, which has been in operation for over a year, started to focus on night school management a month ago.

Wang noted that the night school operation model of Weekend Charging involves cooperation with training institutions to offer interesting courses that young people may not easily come across, such as ukulele, horse riding, and woodwork and leather goods production, in order to lower the learning threshold and cultivate interests and friendships, thus recharging their energies.

Currently, there are over 1,000 active young people in the Weekend Charging community, participating in more than 20 different courses.

"Young people in big cities live in scattered locations and have diverse interests. We play a role in bridging the information gap between training institutions and colleges, and ensuring the cost-effectiveness of night school, a new learning and communication model for young people," Wang said.

A career opportunity

"The new form of night schools is currently thriving, but still in the early stages of development," said Wang. "Everyone is exploring uncharted territory, hoping to establish a comprehensive and smooth operational system that covers courses, pricing, faculty, and after-sales support, in order to foster positive growth and attract and retain the enthusiasm of young learners."

Wang pointed out that the operation of Weekend Charging night school is still in its infancy, and as all members are part-time, they have not yet achieved substantial profits.

"Our core team consists of only 5-6 people, who have come together out of interest and are truly proud to be involved in the night school industry as a career opportunity," he stressed. Wang added that many people find their work meaningful during the classes and continue to sign up. "Although there is uncertainty; we are full of hope for the future of night schools," he said.

The upgraded night schools are also striving to keep up with the times and maintain their appeal to young people.

As the number of students continues to grow, operational challenges also increase. Wang hopes that in the future, the government and private forces will join forces. "Only when this trend passes can high-quality night schools with unified standards be better sustained."

"For some people, attending night school may be a temporary phase, but overall, this social trend includes enhancing self-cultivation and self-improvement in the fields of aesthetics, art, and culture, among others, and also helps create a new industry that benefits social and economic development," Zhang said. "The trend will not change."
