Taiwan-Japan Heartfelt Documentary "After the Snowmelt" and Filipino Fantasy Feature "Mother Maybe" Win Big at TCCF 2023

TAIPEI, TAIWAN – Media OutReach – 10 November 2023 – On Friday November 10, the Taiwan Creative Content Fest held an award ceremony recognizing the best pitched projects during its 4th edition. The two US$30,000 TAICCA X CNC Awards, went to the Taiwanese-Japanese documentary After the Snowmelt and the Filipino fantasy Feature film Mother Maybe.

The event, organized by the Taiwan Creative Content Agency (TAICCA), secured an impressive number of local and international sponsors for its 30 pitching awards including Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan Mobile, Far EasTone and France’s Centre National du cinéma et de l’image animée (CNC). The total award prize surpassed the NT$6 million or nearly US$200,000. Homme Tsai, Chairperson of TAICCA, opened the evening saying that the support for this year’s TCCF had been unprecedented, “the agency has actively collaborated with South Korea, France, Japan, and the three major telecommunications companies in Taiwan. Our goal is to provide creators with more funding while seeking additional international collaboration opportunities.”

The grand prize, the US$30,000 TAICCA X CNC Award, went to the documentary After the Snowmelt. The Taiwanese-Japanese co-production is a heartfelt tribute from director Lo Yi-Shan to her best friend Chu, who passed away while trekking in Nepal. The director highlighted that there are not many opportunities for documentary pitches in Taiwan and was thankful to the organization for featuring a documentary session for the first time, “the fact that TCCF specifically caters to documentary submissions is a significant encouragement.” However, the biggest surprise of the night came right at the end of the ceremony when the organization announced that due to the high quality of the projects this year they would grant a second TAICCA X CNC Award. The second winner, the Filipino feature film Mother Maybe, is a fantasy drama that mixes Filipino folklore with a universal message of finding your own family and your place in the world. Producer Arden Rod Condez, visibly overwhelmed, confessed that “we never expected it. It’s our first film market and my first time in Taiwan but I’m very glad this story resonated with a lot of people. It’s quite personal but, also, a little crazy.” The project also received the Taichung Action Award and the MPA Grand Award that evening.

Another highlighted project in this year’s TCCF PITCHING is the series Maid of Vengeance. Directed by 2022 Golden Bell Best Director winner David Chuang (Danger Zone), this revenge thriller follows the downfall of a TV anchor after her sex tape is leaked online. Now a vigilante, she swears to take down the platform behind the leaked videos. Maid of Vengeance received the Chunghwa Telecom Award, together with a cash prize NT$600,000, and the Series Mania Award, which means the project will participate in Series Mania 2024. Taiwan-Hong Kong feature Appetite for Desire was one of the other top earners of the night. The supernatural drama, co-produced by Taiwan’s Flash Forward Entertainment, received the MIFFEST Award, the Choice of Deep Waters Award and Taipei International Film Award.

This year TCCF PITCHING opened up for the first time to international projects. The 53 selected projects, out of 539 submissions, were presented in 5 different sessions, Project to Screen, divided in feature films, series, animation and documentary, and Story to Screen, for Taiwanese IPs with great adaptability potential. Curator and producer Lorna Tee, one of the awards’ decision makers, declared that “I’m just quite overwhelmed with joy with the quality of the pitched projects at this year’s TCCF. This platform allows filmmakers to think and have meaningful conversations about their projects, and find co-production partners. The more countries involved in the development of a film the easier it will reach a wider audience.”

Psoriatic Disease Response Index

STOCKHOLM, Nov. 10, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — Psoriatic disease, recognized as a serious noncommunicable disease by the World Health Organization (WHO), impacts millions worldwide. A pioneering advocacy tool, the Psoriatic Disease Response Index, has emerged to facilitate a vital policy discussion, driving transformative change. The index comprises Australia, China, Japan, the Philippines, and Singapore in its evaluation of psoriatic disease management and outcomes. It educates and engages policymakers, health leaders, and stakeholders, fostering a deeper understanding of this condition and advocating for a robust health system response. IFPA spearheaded the development of the Psoriatic Disease Response Index, working alongside experts and advocates to create a transformative tool for advancing psoriatic disease management and policy improvements on a global scale.

Psoriatic Disease Response Index

The Psoriatic Disease Response Index is more than just an advocacy tool; it is a call to action for governments to align their efforts with the recommendations laid out in the WHO Global Report on Psoriasis to ensure proper care for those living with psoriatic disease. This Index defines criteria for measuring the effectiveness of national health systems in addressing psoriatic disease, assesses the performance of select health systems, and outlines key recommendations for improvement.

Psoriatic disease is not only complex but also burdensome, making access to treatment and care crucial indicators of overall healthcare system performance. Individuals living with chronic conditions like psoriatic disease often face challenging environments. The Psoriatic Disease Response Index serves as a catalyst for change, shedding light on the barriers to and enablers of healthcare system responsiveness.

Five umbrella categories of indicators have been identified, encompassing a wide range of issues related to living with psoriatic disease and the management of the condition by health systems. The Psoriatic Disease Response Index is the result of interviews with subject matter experts and extensive research into evidence-based data sources. It provides a comprehensive overview of psoriatic disease management in the Western Pacific region, offering recommendations for enhancing care at the national and global levels.

Seeds of hope: China's hybrid rice yields fruitful crops in Pakistan

0

WUHAN, China, Nov. 10, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — A report from China.org.cn:

Muhammad Ashfaq, assistant professor of the Institute of Agricultural Sciences of the University of the Punjab, took over 2,000 samples of rice leaves newly picked from the pilot field in the university to central China’s Wuhan University, on Sept. 14.

Covering the samples with dry ice to keep them fresh, Ashfaq saw to their expedited delivery to the lab of Wuhan University.

The samples of rice leaves were crucial materials for examining the quality of Honglian type hybrid rice planted in the University of the Punjab.

Honglian type hybrid rice, invented by Wuhan University in 1972 and recognized as one of the three kinds of cytoplasmic male sterility hybrid rice worldwide, has been instrumental in international agricultural cooperation and aid.

With a high yield, strong adaptability, and high-temperature resistance, the hybrid rice is suitable to be planted in Belt and Road partner countries in hot climates and facing frequent plant diseases and insect pests.

Cultivating seeds

In 2019, Zhu Renshan and Wu Xianting of Wuhan University, traveled to the University of Punjab for cooperation on researching high-temperature resistant genes, promoting rice planting technologies, as well as improving the quality of the rice.

That year, Ashfaq planted Honglian hybrid rice and saw that its yield was 12.5% higher than that of the best local type.

In 2020, the Wuhan University-University of the Punjab Joint Research Center of Honglian Type Hybrid Rice was launched, and the joint research project received state-level support and recognition the next year.

The research teams on both sides published research papers that drew wide attention in the world’s agricultural field.

Expecting to see the seed field in person, Ashfaq decided to go on a field trip in Wuhan University to learn more about the new type.

Standing in front of the 1,200 mu (about 80 hectares) of the newest Luohongyou 1564 rice field, Ashfaq said in exhilaration that the high plants with rich rice ear suggest high yield.

Each mu of the Luohongyou 1564 seed can yield 700 kilograms of rice, and each mu of the seed field can be used to plant 200 mu of rice paddies. This can thus yield as much as 140 metric tons of food.

Ashfaq could not wait to share the information with his colleagues in Pakistan, hoping to plant the new type in Pakistan in large scale.

During the past five years, the research center advanced trial planting and promotion of Honglian hybrid rice in Pakistan through building bases as well as organizing meetings and training programs. The rice type has attracted great interest from local farmers, seed companies, and governments.

The research team of Wuhan University is now working on improving Honglian hybrid rice’s resistance to bacterial leaf blight, in a bid to cultivate more robust and adaptive type of rice for Pakistan.

In the past decade, China has delivered more than 1,500 agricultural technologies including hybrid rice to Belt and Road partner countries.

Apart from Pakistan, a number of Belt and Road partner countries have benefited from Honglian hybrid rice. More than 70% hybrid rice imported by the Philippines from China are the Honglian type. African countries including Mozambique, Namibia, Kenya, and Chad conducted trial cultivation of Honglian hybrid rice and the yields exceed more than 85% of that of African local species.
