Worldwide English Proficiency Index Reveals Growing Gender Gap Trend, Declining English Skills Among Young Adults

The EF English Proficiency Index is an annual ranking of countries and regions by English skills

India, Indonesia, Mexico, and Japan Experiencing Most Significant Proficiency Declines Among Youth

The Netherlands, Singapore, and Austria Retain Top Spots in EF’s Global English Proficiency Ranking

ZURICH, Nov. 8, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — EF Education First (EF) today released the 2023 edition of its EF English Proficiency Index (EF EPI), the largest international survey of adult English skills.  The index, calculated from the test results of 2.2 million non-native English speakers in 113 countries and regions, reveals a concerning decline in youth English proficiency over the past five years and a growing gender gap.

The EF English Proficiency Index is an annual ranking of countries and regions by English skills

"This year’s index portrays an illusion of global stability – where everyone’s English stays about the same, but the truth is that gains in certain countries and regions are being offset by losses in others," said EF EPI author Kate Bell.  "Language is essential to sharing perspectives and sparking understanding; and as a bridge language, English has been uniquely positioned to connect people across borders.  We look forward to continuing our examination of English proficiency trends over time, as we did for the first time this year."

The EF EPI is based on test scores from the EF Standard English Test (EF SET), used worldwide by schools, companies, and governments for large-scale testing as well as individual test takers.

Key findings include:

Youth English proficiency continues to drop (-89 points in 18 – 20-year-olds since 2015), driven by a few large countries including India and Indonesia. Many more countries experienced pandemic-related declines in this cohort, accelerating the worldwide trend. Workforce proficiency is rising.  Worldwide these gains were made during the pandemic period (+20 points for adults over 30 between 2020 and 2021), however, many national trends indicate steady improvement since 2015. The gender gap is widening, with men’s English improving (+14 points) and women’s declining (-19 points since 2014). The gender gap is not uniform, however, with 63 countries at or near gender parity. Regionally:  Proficiency in East Asia has declined four years running, accelerated this year by Japan and China.  Proficiency in the Middle East is stagnant.  English is steadily improving in Latin America, but the region’s progress is hampered by declining proficiency in Mexico and a slower pace in Brazil.  Despite dominating the top of the index, Europe plateaued this year.  Finally, English proficiency in Africa is largely stable except for Tunisia and Algeria, both improving quickly.

The EF EPI trend report is available for download

EF Education First provides culturally immersive education through language, travel, cultural exchange, and academic programs in over 100 countries.  Founded in Sweden in 1965, EF’s mission is opening the world through education.

Global Times: CIIE reaffirms China's commitment for high-level opening-up, as nation calls countries to work together toward common development

0

BEIJING, Nov. 8, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — The 6th China International Import Expo (CIIE), the world’s biggest import fair, kicked off in Shanghai on Sunday, with more than 3,400 global exhibitors gathering at the expo.

In his letter sent to the event, Chinese President Xi Jinping said the world’s economic recovery lacks momentum and it requires the solidarity and cooperation of all countries. China will always be an important opportunity for global development, Xi said, according to Xinhua News Agency.

President Xi’s letter underlined China’s unswerving commitment to further opening up its market, said Chinese Premier Li Qiang, who delivered a key note speech at the opening ceremony of the 6th CIIE and the Hongqiao International Economic Forum.

Over the next five years, China’s imports in goods and services are expected to reach $17 trillion in cumulative terms, Li said, noting that China will continue to promote the greater opening-up of market opportunities.

Li said the country will actively expand imports, promote coordinated development of trade in goods and services, implement negative lists for cross-border service trade, support innovation in foreign trade formats and models, and boost digital trade.

China sincerely hopes that countries around the world will meet each other half way in the grand stage of openness, and be partners for mutual success, said Li.

Warm reception

The stance by the Chinese government on further opening up has been well received by the international organizations and global company executives.

"This expo is a powerful and well established platform, and a symbol of China’s commitment to balance trade relations with the rest of the world, and especially with the developing countries and the small and medium-sized enterprises," Rebeca Grynspan, secretary-general of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), said in her speech at the event. "It is a marketplace of ideas, a confluence of cultures and a starting point for a new paradigm in global action and international cooperation."

"China will continue to play a pivotal role in powering the global economic growth. China has clearly demonstrated its commitment to promoting global development, that is something we hope to continue to play a part in," said Australian mining giant Rio Tinto Chief Executive Jakob Stausholm, according to a statement sent to the Global Times.

"China’s opening-up has brought opportunity to the world, and also ushered in the world’s advanced technology and large volumes of foreign investment to China. Cooperation has promoted the continuous expansion of international exchanges, driven more and newer technological applications to take root in China, and thus promoted social development," German conglomerate Siemens AG said in a statement sent to the Global Times.

"The CIIE is actually very successful for us as a company. Over the years, it has moved from being more of a product promotion to more and more of a very good stage for us to develop with the authorities and present our strategy as a company," Maximilian Foerst, president of ZEISS Greater China, which has attended CIIE six times, told the Global Times in an exclusive interview on Sunday.

Common development

Cao Heping, an economist from Peking University, told the Global Times on Sunday that the CIIE, as a major offline trade expo returning to full strength this year, will help bolster China’s foreign trade.

Based on the achievements of the 134th China Import and Export Fair, or Canton Fair, which churned out higher value of deals than last year, the 6th CIIE is likely to see even more deals, Cao said, noting that Chinese consumers’ willingness to spend has not been dented.

The Canton Fair logged export deals worth $22.3 billion in total signed offline, according to organizers on Saturday.

As China is the major trading partners for more than 140 countries, it is great news for the global economy, Cao said, noting that as Chinese economy recovers from the impact of the pandemic, the gap between exports and imports are expected to narrow further.

China’s matrix of exhibitions, which include the Canton Fair, the CIIE and China International Supply Chain Expo in recent weeks, left a deep impression on foreign company representatives.

"Exhibitions have become a perfect venue for foreign companies to showcase their products. The Chinese exhibition infrastructure is very advanced in design and tech," Kevin Chen, a manager with Australian honey brand ANB, told the Global Times.

The CIIE enjoys the highest profile among all major Chinese trade fairs in recent years, Hu Qimu, a deputy secretary-general of the digital-real economies integration Forum 50, told the Global Times on Sunday.

The emphasis attached to the CIIE means that the nation is pursuing more balanced growth in both imports and exports, Hu said, noting that China has already gone beyond simply eyeing driving up its exports, even as it still being a major driving force for boosting the economic development.

Rather than engaging in the trade protectionism or "small yard and high fence" strategy, the CIIE serves to showcase China’s welcome attitude toward the inflow of global investment and resources and willingness to share its growth dividends from development.

Official data showed that China’s imports have maintained sound momentum, with import volume expanding quarter by quarter this year. China has been the world’s second-largest import market for 14 consecutive years.

Wang Wen, a professor and executive dean of the Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies at Renmin University of China, told the Global Times on Sunday that that globalization faces severe risks of "ebbing" as the world is experiencing major changes unseen in a century, coupled with the lingering impact of the pandemic.

"The annual holding of the CIIE, with increasingly better results, is something hard to achieve and it demonstrated China’s sincerity in honoring its commitment to the outside world, the attractiveness of China’s consumption market and China’s posture as a civilized country," Wang said.

A total of 289 of the world’s top 500 and industry-leading enterprises are set to participate in the 6th CIIE, which is scheduled to be held in Shanghai from Sunday to November 10, according to China’s Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM).

More than 3,400 exhibitors and 410,000 professional visitors have registered to attend, marking a full return to pre-pandemic levels, according to China’s MOFCOM.

The 6th CIIE, which is being held just weeks after China successfully hosted the third Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation, has also drawn record attendance from Belt and Road partner countries to showcase their products and services.

According to statistics, the previous five CIIEs have attracted over two million registered visitors, 131 countries and international organizations, and more than 15,000 companies.

Over 2,000 new products, new technologies and new services were unveiled at previous CIIEs, and close to $350 billion worth of tentative deals were reached.

HKBU-led research discovers therapeutic potential of hyodeoxycholic acid for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease

HKBU-led research discovers therapeutic potential of hyodeoxycholic acid for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease

HONG KONG SAR – Media OutReach – 8 November 2023 – A research led by Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) has discovered that hyodeoxycholic acid (HDCA), a bile acid generated in human intestine, can reduce fat accumulation and inflammation in the liver, demonstrating its strong therapeutic potential for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The research also found that HDCA’s intervention in NAFLD works by reshaping the population of beneficial gut bacteria, which affects the metabolic interactions between the gut and the liver. The result highlighted the critical role of gut health in liver disease.

A research led by Professor Jia Wei, Acting Dean and Chair Professor in Chinese Medicine and Systems Biology of the School of Chinese Medicine at HKBU, discovers that hyodeoxycholic acid offers promising potential as a pharmaceutical intervention for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

The research findings have been published in the renowned scientific journal Cell Metabolism. HKBU researchers will coordinate a phase I and II clinical trial in the Mainland to evaluate the safety and efficacy of HDCA for patients with fatty liver disease and type 2 diabetes.

32% of adults suffer from NAFLD

NAFLD is a leading cause of chronic liver disease, characterised by the build-up of excessive fat in liver cells that is not caused by alcohol consumption. Its global prevalence has been increasing over time. A meta-analysis in 2022 estimated that 32% of the adult population is affected by NAFLD. Some people with NAFLD can develop non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, which is marked by liver inflammation and may progress to cirrhosis and liver failure. Currently, there are no therapeutic drugs available for sale on the market for non-alcoholic steatohepatitis.

A research led by Professor Jia Wei, Acting Dean and Chair Professor in Chinese Medicine and Systems Biology of the School of Chinese Medicine at HKBU, discovered that HDCA offers promising potential as a pharmaceutical intervention for NAFLD. “Our research is a significant stride forward in understanding the pathophysiology of NAFLD, and it offers a potential new avenue for therapeutic intervention,” he said.

Therapeutic effects of HDCA

Professor Jia’s team found that individuals with NAFLD have lower levels of HDCA compared to those without NAFLD. In a cohort consisting of 178 patients with NAFLD and 73 healthy individuals, hyocholic acid species, including HDCA and its major metabolite glycohyodeoxycholic acid, comprises 0.5% of the bile acids in NAFLD patients, which is significantly lower than the 2% in healthy individuals. This observation led the team to explore HDCA’s potential therapeutic role.

A series of controlled experiments were conducted to evaluate the therapeutic effect of HDCA. The team orally fed HDCA to mouse models with NAFLD for eight weeks. The results showed that HDCA markedly reduced excessive lipid droplets, and improved hepatic inflammation, oral glucose tolerance (i.e. the blood glucose level after oral intake of glucose), and insulin sensitivity (i.e. the sensitivity of the body to the effects of insulin which helps the glucose to enter into the cells for use) compared to the control group. The results revealed that HDCA alleviated NAFLD conditions and the risk factors of NAFLD such as type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance.

Interestingly, the researchers found that HDCA did not exert its therapeutic effects on NAFLD by directly targeting liver cells. They evaluated the potential direct effect of HDCA on lipid accumulation in a mouse model. The results showed that lipid accumulation was barely affected by the HDCA. They hypothesised that HDCA induced gut microbiota alterations, which might contribute to the alleviation of NAFLD.

HDCA reshapes gut microbiota

The researchers observed that HDCA could improve the population of beneficial gut bacteria. Parabacteroides distasonis (P. distasonis), a member of the core microbiome in the human gut, sharply increased in the mouse model fed with high-fat food and administered with HDCA, compared with the control group fed with high-fat food only. The results revealed that HDCA provided a favorable environment for the thriving of P. distasonis, which regulates fatty acid metabolism as well as the hepatic bile acid synthesis pathways.

“The study underscores the crucial role of the gut-liver metabolic axis in disease management. We hope that the research findings on HDCA and the clinical trial to be conducted in the Mainland will provide more insights into the treatment of fatty liver disease and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis,” said Professor Jia.

Professor Jia has also led a research project investigating the molecular connections between metabolic-associated fatty liver disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus, with a specific focus on host-gut microbiota interactions. The project has been awarded over HK$7.2 million in research funding from the Theme-based Research Scheme (13th round) under the Research Grants Council.

TAIZHOU, China, Nov. 8, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — This is a report from China.org.cn:

The 2023 Global Forum on Hehe Culture was held in Tiantai county, Zhejiang province, on Tuesday.

Themed with "Hehe Culture and Global Civilization Initiative," the forum aimed to implement the initiative, showcase the Chinese culture of peace and harmony, or "hehe" as pronounced in Chinese, and promote exchange and mutual learning among civilizations.

The 2023 Global Forum on Hehe Culture is held in Tiantai county, Zhejiang province, on Nov. 7, 2023. [Photo/China.org.cn]

The event comprises four parallel sessions, exploring the relationship between Hehe Culture and dialogue, cooperation among civilizations, the guidance of common values, and family harmony, as well as the protection, inheritance, and innovation of Hehe Culture. In addition, an ambassadors’ roundtable discussion and a Hehe Culture salon for global youth were also held.

Zhang Xuewei, vice chairman of the Zhejiang Provincial Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, said at the forum that the culture of Tiantai Mountain, characterized by a pursuit of harmony, kindness, and progress, reflects the significant values of harmony, peace, and coexistence in Chinese culture. "Hehe Culture belongs not only to China but also to the world," he said.

Zhang added that Zhejiang is dedicated to leveraging its geographical, human, and cultural advantages, with robust academic achievements and creative theoretical contributions, to study Hehe Culture from multiple perspectives and explore its historical and cultural values, contemporary relevance, and global significance.

In his speech, Yukio Hatoyama, former prime minister of Japan and president of the East Asia Community Institute, said Hehe Culture captures the essence of the peaceful nature of the Chinese nation and can help steer a world suffering from wars and disputes to the road of peace and stability.

The former Japanese leader emphasized that in the face of the current dire and complex global trends and humanitarian crises, nations need, more than ever, the spirit of peace and fraternity from Hehe Culture. These principles should guide efforts to promote mutual respect, understanding, assistance, and mutual survival and prosperity, he said.

In a speech delivered via video links, Du Zhanyuan, president of China International Communications Group, said that peace is a prominent feature of the Chinese civilization. Hehe Culture contains rich Chinese wisdom, and peace is one of its core essence, he said.

Du said peace and security are the most basic need for human survival and the common aspiration of people of all countries since ancient times. The realization of world peace requires correct decisions and actions by governments and international organizations, as well as efforts from the media and think tanks to build global consensus for peace and development, he said.

Du said China International Communications Group has long been committed to promoting Chinese culture on the international stage and facilitating exchange and mutual learning between Chinese and other civilizations. It is also dedicated to advocating cultural exchange with a global perspective, promoting cultural progress with mutual learning, promoting exchange among the younger generation with a future vision, and forever passing on the spirit of peace and harmony.

In her speech at the opening of the forum, Irina Bokov, former director-general of UNESCO, said that Hehe Culture contains the values of "harmony between nature and man," "harmony," and "kindness." She said it advocates genuine multilateralism, respects the differences between different civilizations, and upholds win-win cooperation and humanism, which is in line with the purpose of UNESCO.

Noting that the forum is being held at the 10th anniversary of the Belt and Road Initiative, Bokov said that, for thousands of years, the ancient Silk Road has shown the world how great civilizations have intermingled and influenced each other, proving the existence of mutual respect, dialogue on an equal footing, and cultural interactions between the East and the West.

Bokov said that, at a time when conflicts are intensifying in the world, the Global Civilization Initiative offers profound inspiration to respect cultural diversity and promote exchange and mutual learning among civilizations.

Li Xikui, vice president of the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, said he believes Hehe Culture is an important idea of Confucianism and an approach to civilizational progress for human beings. The concepts of Hehe Culture such as peace being the most valuable, harmony in diversity, harmony and co-existence, have become the cultural identity and value pursuit of Eastern civilizations, and also contain important inspiration and wisdom to solve the problems facing mankind today.

He expressed confidence that Hehe Culture can bring new hope to regions still facing threats to peace.
