Thailand shelves 300-baht tourism fee

The Ministry of Tourism and Sports has announced that it will postpone the collection of the 300-baht tourism fee until the fourth quarter of this year and will propose the cancellation of the Thailand Pass starting next month.

Tourism and Sports Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn announced that the ministry has decided to withdraw the proposal to implement a tourism fee in order to conduct additional research on the matter. In light of tourists who only stay one or two nights in the country, he believes that the tourist fee for land arrival should be reconsidered.

The ministry will submit the proposal to the cabinet within two months, with the implementation of the fee taking place 90 days after the Royal Gazette publication. This suggests that the starting date could be between the fourth quarter of this year and the first quarter of 2023.

Thailand Pass to be cancelled in July

Piphat stated that the proposal for the cancellation of the Thailand Pass registration for international arrivals to the Center for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) during its next meeting will attract more tourists, as they will no longer be required to purchase travel insurance or deal with complex entry procedures. The Tourism Authority of Thailand…

TAT working to further develop Carbon Neutral Tourism in Thailand

Bangkok, 5 July, 2022 – The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is continuing with its mission to grow the Carbon Neutral Tourism sector in Thailand, in accordance with the Thai government’s Bio-Circular-Green or BCG Economy Model that is taking Thai tourism in a more sustainable and responsible direction.

Mr. Yuthasak Supasorn, TAT Governor, said “In addition to helping to reduce negative impacts on the environment and society, this ‘carbon neutral tourism’ initiative also helps to add value, creativity, and competitiveness to Thai tourism products and services in the global market. It also increases Thailand’s appeal to quality tourists who are environmentally conscious, and who want to contribute to reducing economic, social and environmental impacts.”

TAT is using a concept of ‘adjust, reduce, compensate’ in business development and prototype tourism activities that are in line with Carbon Neutral Tourism.

Using tourism resources in a cost-effective manner for maximum benefits, TAT is working to build capacity, and develop and extend Carbon Neutral Tourism management in a way suited to tourism operators, which creates participation in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The focus is on turning normal business tourism activities into low-carbon tourism activities towards the goal of achieving tourism that reduces an environmental impact. Carbon credits can be provided for what impact is created, as well as a source to absorb greenhouse gases, to reduce the total impact to zero (none or virtually no greenhouse gas emissions).

TAT is promoting five pilot business units in three types of business – communities, farm stays, and smart farms. These are:

  1. Tham Suea Community in Phetchaburi Province promoting zero carbon tourism (contact: Tel. +66 (0) 8291 87774);
  2. Rimklong Homestay Community in Samut Songkhram Province highlighting environmental-friendly, slow-life travel in coconut plantations (contact: Tel. +66 (0) 8917 02904);
  3. Rai Jai Yim Farm Stay in Kanchanaburi Province featuring camping and farm activities (contact: Tel. +66 (0) 8548 26559);
  4. Rai Khuean Rang Farm Stay in Nakhon Ratchasima Province focusing on zero carbon tourism and slow-life experience in mixed farming (contact: Tel. +66 (0) 8924 41369);
  5. Thai Tawee Pomelo Garden in Nakhon Pathom Province a smart farm showcasing educational farm life experiences in a pilot smart organic farm (contact: Tel. +66 (0) 8362 65499).

DTN Urges Durian Farmers to Take Advantage of Current FTAs

0

BANGKOK (NNT) – This month marks the beginning of the fruit season in Thailand amid rising demand for Thai fruits abroad, particularly durian, the king of fruits.

Through the sale of fresh crops and manufactured goods, Thailand became the world’s leading exporter of durian in 2021, with an export value of $3.78 billion.

In an effort to encourage local farmers to take advantage of existing free trade agreements, the Department of Trade Negotiations recently visited local durian producers in the Betong district of Yala province, which borders Malaysia.

Auramon Supthaweethum, Director-General of the Department of Trade Negotiations, revealed that more than 50 percent of durians exported by the kingdom originated from the southern provinces, with Malaysia serving as a major trading partner. She further explained that the shared border with Thailand has made it easier for Malaysian consumers to acquire this delectable fruit. Musang King Durian is the most popular variety with Malaysian consumers.

Auramon stated that Thailand now has free trade agreements with eighteen countries, allowing domestic farmers to export fruit to a variety of markets without obstruction. She added that local farmers should capitalize appropriately on these agreements.

The department has also urged local producers, partner organizations, and community businesses to work together to increase product stocking capacity and enhance the process of product standardization.
