IMD: Thailand’s Competitiveness Ranking Drops Five Places to 33

BANGKOK (NNT) – According to the World Competitiveness Ranking 2022, Thailand fell from 28 last year to 33 out of a total of 63 economies this year, as the Kingdom battles the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The World Competitiveness Ranking 2022 was compiled by the World Competitiveness Center under the International Institute for Management Development (IMD).

Theeranan Srihong, president of the Thailand Management Association’s (TMA) Centre for Competitiveness, explained that Thailand performed less in all indicators. The Kingdom scored 68.67 this year, a significant drop from last year’s 72.52. Thailand’s score is well below this year’s average of 70.03.

He stated that the drop demonstrated a lack of faith in government policies to remodel the economic structure, as well as a lack of confidence in the government’s ability to help the public and economic sectors in order for them to become stronger.

For Thailand to stay competitive, both the public and private sectors will need to improve their “agility” and resilience in responding to the volatile global economic climate, according to Theeranan.

On July 7th, the TMA will play host to Thailand Competitiveness Conference 2022 titled “Thailand: Fit for the Future” to present views on how Thai businesses should change and adapt to remain globally competitive, he noted.

Tourism Rebound could generate 3 trillion Baht in two years for Thailand

0

The Ministry of Tourism recently elaborated on the performance of Thailand’s tourism sector during the pandemic, noting that its post-pandemic rebound could generate 3 trillion baht in two years.

The remarks were made as part of the government’s explanation at the parliament’s fiscal budget debate, during which the opposition accused the proposed 2023 budget of being inequitable.

Tourism and Sports Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn said the number of international tourists visiting Thailand before the pandemic numbered 39.8 million, contributing to some 3 trillion baht that accounted for 18% of national GDP.

In 2021, Thailand recorded just 430,000 international visitors. The figure from the beginning of this year through May increased to 1.31 million, marking a positive start for 2022.

Tourism target set to 7-10 million in 2022

The Ministry of Tourism and Sports now expects the number of international tourists from June through September this year to be around 2.7-3 million, and more than 1 million between October and December 2022. The ministry has set a total international tourism target for this year at 7-10 million people and expects the nation to reel in 1.15-1.5 trillion baht.

The ministry anticipates that the tourism revenue will touch 2.4 trillion baht next year and the pre-pandemic figure of 3…

BANGKOK (NNT) – The deployment of 5G technology in support of national development has long been a key policy pursued by the current administration, with emphasis on using technology creatively to create more opportunities and make Thailand a regional center for digital affairs.

Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha recently presided over the opening ceremony for Thailand 5G Summit 2022 at Centara Grand Hotel and Bangkok Convention Center. The summit was organized by the Digital Economy Promotion Agency, the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (MDES), and private sector co-hosts. The latter included Huawei Technologies (Thailand) and the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA).

The prime minister said the MDES has been tasked with laying down a policy framework for promoting the utilization of 5G technology in Thailand. This in turn would benefit the management of telecommunication infrastructure that accommodates 5G and promotes the development of new products and services.

Gen Prayut called this year’s summit a starting point for developing collaboration networks in Thailand and abroad. The event also serves to demonstrate Thailand’s 5G capacity and the preparedness of its telecom infrastructure to accommodate 5G technology. Additionally, it serves to help Thailand expand on technologies and digital innovations for the purposes of enhancing the nation’s competitiveness and driving the digital economy. The summit will also contribute to the kingdom’s efforts to become a regional leader in 5G technology.

Digital Economy and Society Minister Chaiwut Thanakamanusorn said driving digital technology and innovations is crucial for promoting the utilization of 5G, while also expanding opportunities for the business and civic sectors.
