0

Bangkok, 20 May, 2022 – Thailand’s Centre of COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) today approved the simplified Thailand Pass registration and entry rules for international arrivals, effective 1 June 2022.

Foreign nationals are still required to apply for a Thailand Pass (via https://tp.consular.go.th/), but will only need to provide passport details, vaccination, and an US$10,000 health insurance policy.

Thais no longer need to apply

The system will then automatically issue a Thailand Pass QR code for the applicants. Meanwhile, Thais will no longer be required to apply for a Thailand Pass.

Upon arriving in Thailand, vaccinated travellers must undergo entry screening, and will then be allowed entry and are free to go anywhere in the kingdom.

Unvaccinated/not fully vaccinated travellers who are able to upload proof of a negative RT-PCR or professional ATK test within 72 hours of travel via the Thailand Pass system will also be allowed entry and are free to go anywhere in the kingdom.

Night-time entertainment venues to reopen

The CCSA also approved further easing of nationwide COVID-19 controls with three colour-coded zones: The Pilot Tourist Areas or blue zones, the Surveillance or green zone, and the Areas under Stringent Surveillance or yellow zone.

BOT Advises Against Late Rate Hikes

BANGKOK (NNT) – The Bank of Thailand (BOT) has said delaying rate hikes for too long would not be good for the nation as inflation continues to climb, in remarks that prompted economists to predict an imminent rate hike.

BOT Governor Sethaput Suthiwartnarueput told a business seminar and reporters that inflation is expected to rise beyond the central bank’s 1-3% target range this year, and is seen peaking at 7.5% in the third quarter.

Sethaput noted, however, that any hikes will be gradual as concerns remain about a recovery in the vital tourism sector. He did not say how soon and how much rates would be increased.

He added that policy tightening should not be done too late to avoid sharp increases, while projecting that the return of the Thai economy to pre-pandemic levels would be late this year or in early 2023.

Last week, the central bank left its key rate unchanged at a record low of 0.5%. In a 4-3 vote, however, the three dissenters favored a quarter-point hike, citing increased upside risks to both growth and inflation. read more

The BOT will next review policy in August, when economists expect a rate increase. Last week, the BOT raised its 2022 economic growth forecast to 3.3% from 3.2% and sharply increased its inflation outlook to 6.2% from 4.9% seen earlier.

Sethaput said the economy is not expected to face an economic crisis, just high inflation, adding that external stability was good and capital flows were not yet a concern.

He also said a weak baht at five-year lows against the dollar has not accelerated inflation much, assuring that the BOT would not be complacent and would closely monitor the situation.

Thai Exports Benefit From Baht Depreciation

BANGKOK (NNT) – The weaker baht has been allowing Thailand to export more goods even as industries that rely on imports are being negatively impacted. As of Monday (June 13th), the Thai baht traded at 34.81 against the US dollar.

Industry Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit made the announcement, citing information from the Office of Industrial Economics (OIE).

The minister noted that businesses which rely heavily on imports will especially feel the impact of the weakened Thai baht. He also suggested that operators exercise caution when dealing with exchange rates, adding that they should carefully manage their resources.

Macroeconomic models indicate that a further baht depreciation of 5% will actually increase Thai Real GDP (RGDP) by 0.4%, and bump industrial sector RGDP by 0.35%. It will also help expand the export and import sectors by 2.14% and 1.94%, respectively.

Private consumption and investment are meanwhile projected to increase by 0.21% and 0.31%, respectively, with the 5% depreciation also expected to cause inflation to rise by 0.57%.
