Interests Kept at Record Low Amid Gradual Rate Hikes

BANGKOK (NNT) – A shift by the Bank of Thailand (BOT) to a more hawkish footing this week came as a surprise to markets and appeared to finally end policymakers’ tolerance for mounting price pressures, but a range of risks are likely to keep any tightening gradual.

The BOT kept its benchmark interest rate at a record low on Wednesday (8 May), but a split vote on the decision was a signal to markets that the central bank may raise interest rates as soon as August.

Thailand has been among Asia’s least hawkish central banks, maintaining its policy focus on supporting an economy still struggling with the pandemic – particularly a lack of Chinese tourists – and insisting that supply-driven inflation is better dealt with through fiscal measures and price controls, rather than rates.

Kobsidthi Silpachai, head of capital markets research of Kasikornbank, expects the BOT to raise rates in August by 25 basis points to 0.75%, but believes such tightening would mostly be a symbolic gesture to markets more than an attempt to tackle inflation.

Three of the BOT’s seven committee members voted for a rate hike this week, a contrast to its August meeting at which two members voted for a cut. Kobsidthi said the board’s new concern about inflation may not endure if threats to economic growth take precedence.

Thailand’s headline inflation hit a near 14-year high of 7.1% in May, well above the BOT’s target range of 1-3%. The BOT predicts inflation of 6.2% for the whole of 2022.

Other analysts see conviction in the central bank’s acknowledgement of inflation as an issue, and have added a series of rate hikes to their projections for this year from none previously.

Thailand Travel Mart Plus (TTM+) 2022 estimated to actualise 1.29 billion Baht revenue

Phuket, 10 June, 2022 – Thailand’s leading B2B travel industry show, the Thailand Travel Mart Plus (TTM+) 2022, ended successfully today with high levels of satisfaction among participants on the quality and diversity of the entire programme and the potential business expected to be generated.

Mr. Yuthasak Supasorn, Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), said, “The two full days of buyer/seller appointments on Thursday, 9 June and Friday, 10 June, are expected to result in 8,000 business appointments and generate some 1.29 billion Baht revenue for the Thai economy.”

According to the interview with buyers and sellers during the event, they have seen quick recovery in global tourism industry with travel demand increasing steadily, and expected that travel booking will resume in the fourth quarter of this year to the first quarter of 2023.

Buyers and sellers expressed their views that a physical tradeshow has still maintained its importance as the great way to build personal trusts, create new networks as well as keep relationship with business partners.

First held in 2001, the TTM+ has gained a well-earned reputation in visitor source markets the world over, and within Thailand’s tourism industry itself, as a ‘must-attend’ event. Held mostly in Bangkok each year since its launch, the TTM+ was relocated to Chiang Mai in 2016-17, Pattaya in 2018-19, and then Phuket in 2022 as part of the strategy to promote provincial destinations.

The TTM+ 2022 once again continued the tradition of providing a valuable platform for sellers and buyers to meet with current and potential business partners and to reinforce relationships with global travel specialists and decision-makers.

As the TTM+ was held for the first time in Phuket since last being held in Pattaya in 2019, the 277 buyers from 42 countries and international media also had a chance to see many of the new tourism products, services, and attractions that have emerged in Phuket and the rest of Thailand post-pandemic, as well as the kingdom’s readiness to welcome international tourists in the new-normal.

On Saturday, 11 June, some buyers and media are scheduled to take part in post-event tours with three routings that are tailor-made to showcase the ‘Amazing New Chapter’ tourism experiences in Phuket, Krabi, Phang-nga, Ko Samui, and Ko Pha-ngan, as well as the cultural and gastronomy delights of Bangkok.

The ‘Experience the New Chapter of Bangkok’ programme highlights famous and emerging attractions in the Thai capital including the Grand Palace and riverside communities, wellness experience, and Michelin star restaurants, tuk-tuk ride, and dinner cruise.

The ‘Defining Your Thainess’ itinerary features the scenic beauty, welcoming charm, and famous tropical island atmosphere of Phuket, Phang-nga, and Krabi. Some of the activities include community-based tourism, local fishery, and cookery class.

The ‘Authentic Artisan Retreats’ tour connects Phuket with Ko Samui and Ko Pha-ngan. Some of the activities include a spa experience, island tours, and yoga and Muay Thai classes.

Next year’s edition of the TTM+ is tentatively scheduled to take place in Bangkok from 31 May to 2 June, 2023.

TAT strengthens presence in the Middle East market

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is strengthening Thailand’s presence as the preferred tourist destination among Middle East travellers to drive interest in returning to Thailand in the post COVID-19 situation.

This has come about through the recent participation in the Arabian Travel Market (ATM) 2022, latest partnerships with Qatar Airways and Almosafer – one of the region’s top three largest online travel agents, and a number of marketing and promotional activities.

TAT led a Thai delegation that included 18 hotels, three hospitals, two travel agencies and one theme park to participate in the ATM 2022, held on 9-12 May, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Across the four-day event, the Thai delegation had on average 128 business appointments each, or over 3,000 sessions combined. This is expected to boost tourism from the Middle East market to Thailand, and generate about one billion Baht income for 2022.

“The interest in returning to Thailand is on the rise, and this is certainly a sign that the market was recovering quickly after the COVID-19 situation. Thailand’s focus at the ATM 2022 was on doing business with the upper market segment, such as families, medical treatment groups, and the new sector of women travelling on their own for shopping, beauty treatments, and other such activities.”

PH: Franchising sector sees robust growth

PH: Franchising sector sees robust growth

The domestic franchising sector sees growth accelerating this year with the influx of new breed of franchisees and the issuance of Executive Order 169 that seeks to protect micro small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and promote entrepreneurship.

“As the economy opens up and more people return to invest in new opportunities, we see accelerated growth in franchising,” said Chris Lim, president of the Philippine Franchising Association (PFA).

The projected growth acceleration, he said, is driven by the realization of people of the need to diversify their income sources and a trend of people wanting to be their own boss and not have to go to an 8 to 5 job.

“We’ve also seen new breeds of franchisees coming in – from landlords who want to do more than just rent out their properties, to retrenched employees and business owners wanting to start over but not wanting to take on too much risk. They know franchising is a safer investment choice that’s why it has a 90 percent-plus success rate,” he said.

In addition, Lim said the issuance of EO 169 “Strengthening the Franchising Industry for the Protection of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises” by President Rodrigo Duterte will further promote entrepreneurship.

“We, in PFA, have been ceaseless in our efforts to educate the public on wise franchise investment,” said PFA Chairman Sherill Quintana.

“Transparency in a franchisor’s business dealings is also a major feature of the Fair Franchising Standards (FFS), which is PFA’s code of ethics,” Lim added. The FFS serves as a guide to all PFA members – 70 percent of which are MSMEs – in how they conduct the sale of their business.

The essence of the EO is to protect franchisees and eliminate franchise scams,” said Quintana. The PFA, she said, will participate in the crafting of the EO’s IRR. “It will be critical to create practical IRR to ensure that it does not stifle the growth and innovation of the sector as was the experience of other countries that over-regulated their franchising sectors,” she said.

Labor Ministry Says Daily Incremental Wage Increase Likely

BANGKOK (NNT) – Labour Minister Suchart Chomklin has affirmed that the minimum daily wage will increase this year, although the increase will not be significant in order to protect businesses still reeling from the economic effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to Suchart, the increase will be determined by a national tripartite wage committee, which will also consider the rising cost of living.

The minimum daily wage was evaluated one year after the 2012 floods, but the rate remained unchanged between 2014 and 2015. It was last raised in January 2020, when it went from 313 to 336 baht.

The current minimum wage varies from province to province. Chon Buri and Phuket have the highest daily rates at 336 baht, while Narathiwat, Pattani, and Yala have the lowest rates at 331 baht per day.

Suchart stated that, if approved, the new minimum daily wage will go into effect on January 1, 2023.

Cambodia’s Border Reopening: Opportunities for Tourism Sector

0

Cambodia’s border reopening is a boost to its tourism industry, which is an important contributor to the economy, behind the textile and garment manufacturing sector.

The tourism industry will be of greater importance after the country lost its ‘Everything but Arms’ (EBA) status by the EU – an EBA status had previously enabled Cambodia to enjoy duty-free access to EU markets.

Cambodia is now fully open to foreign travelers although there are still quarantine requirements for travelers who are not fully vaccinated.

The country is among a slew of ASEAN countries that have opened their borders to international travelers. Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, and Indonesia have eased border restrictions to varying degrees. For instance, Vietnam and Malaysia have allowed entry of foreign travelers regardless of their vaccination status whereas Indonesia and Singapore primarily only allow fully vaccinated travelers; unvaccinated travelers can enter if they have a medical reason and will have to undergo quarantine.

The border relaxation will be a boost to Cambodia’s tourism sector, which plays a vital role in the country’s economic growth, contributing to some 12 percent of GDP annually.

The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic saw international traveler numbers decrease by 80 percent from 6.6 million visitors to 1.3…
