Thailand’s National Parks Take Proactive Approach to Dealing with Lumpy Skin Disease

0

BANGKOK (NNT) Thailand’s Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) is taking a proactive approach in the fight against Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) in wild animal populations in Kui Buri and Kaeng Krachan national parks.

DNP Veterinarian Pattarapol Maneeorn said teams are on stand-by to treat wild animals suspected of being infected. Treatment of farm livestock has shown that the infected animals have a high chance of survival if they can be rounded up and tested.

He said park officials have also been sent to build artificial dry licks, containing essential minerals, to boost local animals’ immunity. Based on footage from surveillance cameras at 12 locations, 66 gaurs and four bulls are suspected of having the disease.

Mr. Pattarapol said surveillance is being stepped up in the parks, after a dead gaur found in Kui Buri national park was confirmed to have been infected, adding that, although only one case in wild animals has been confirmed since the outbreak was reported several months ago, there are several suspected cases scattered across the national parks.

Macabeo said the Asean cosmetic labeling guidelines include product content in weight or volume, brand and product name of the cosmetic product and its function, batch number,  manufacturing/expiry date of the product in clear terms, and country of manufacture.

Mother’s Day shooting stars- where to watch "Perseid" meteor shower?

0

BANGKOK (NNT) – Members of the general public are urged not to miss the “Perseid” meteor shower or “Mother’s Day meteor shower” on Mother’s Day (Aug 12) night through to the dawn of 13 August

The Perseids are expected to reach an a peak rate of 110 meteors per hour in the early hours of 13 August around 2 am. It is also the best time for viewing thanks to clear skys without moonlight, according to the National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand or NARIT.

The Agency suggest places far away from cities with dark and open sky are ideal. The Perseids can be spotted with the naked eye without any special equipment. If there’s no rain, viewers will enjoy the shooting stars flying across the skies of Thailand.

The “colorful” Persieds can be seen annually around 17- 24 August. They are the second brightest meteor shower after the Leonids.

The Perseids meteor shower originates from Swift-Tuttle Comet’s debris left in orbit, causing colorful flashes in the sky when the Earth slams into the particles.

Those who would like to join a livestream to watch the spectacle online, should visit NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center’s Facebook page where it will be streamed from skywatching cameras.

Reservoir Construction Project around a Thai Forest Complex Is Still in Study Phase

0

BANGKOK (NNT) – Thailand’s Royal Irrigation Department (RID) has explained that a plan to construct a cluster of seven reservoirs around the Dong Phayayen-Khao Yai Forest Complex is still in its study phase, in response to local environment groups which oppose the project.

RID Director of environment Mahit Wongsa said none of the seven projects, which are a part of a water management effort for the Bang Pakong river basin, have begun and some are still pending surveys and design planning.

He said the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DPN) also asked the RID to clarify the reservoir project issue. Earlier, there were concerns that the Dong Phayayen-Khao Yai Forest Complex was at risk of being placed on a “danger list”, due to forest encroachment by development projects.

Mr. Mahit said, however, that UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee spared it and asked Thailand to comply with its recommendations and refrain from building new dams.

BANGKOK(NNT) – Thailand’s Customs Department reports that its online payment system has been completed and the digital tax compensation system is set to begin on 21 September.

Department Director-General Patchara Anuntasilpa said the digital tax compensation system provides an electronic coupon which traders can use at their convenience. Importers and exporters can receive the e-coupons via an online channel from next month.

He said the system should reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission between the public and customs officials. The department has already adopted electronic payment for many of its other processes, including the issuance of import permits for some products.

Mr Patchara added that the department deploys X-ray and artificial intelligence systems to analyze products in containers, to determine if they match the declarations made by exporters and importers.
