They have suggested the government extend the event to five days, to allow jobseekers more time to consider and apply for more positions.

TGO announces success of climate change campaign

0

BANGKOK(NNT)-Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization has revealed the successful outcome of its technical campaign promoting knowledge of climate change and creating an international academic network, to help encourage the general public to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization’s (TGO) Executive Director Kiatchai Maitriwong, has revealed successful outcomes from the organisation’s 3-year technical skills enhancement campaign on climate change, which has helped in promoting skills and knowhow for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, among officials and academics from 10 ASEAN countries.

The campaign has received support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), providing six training programs on greenhouse gas, the implementation of more eco-friendly technology, waste and waste-water management, in-depth analysis and measurement of greenhouse gas, as well as the promotion of low carbon businesses.

After the conclusion of the campaign, TGO will further develop these programs into a Thai language course, along with the establishment of a learning center on climate change, to promote the knowledge to officials and employees of government agencies, and private firms across the country.

TGO has also disclosed the outcomes of its campaigns for a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in 2020, including the introduction of carbon credits, a campaign that is expected to help reduce 3.0 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions through the promotion of carbon offsets, as well as the carbon label for products that help reduce global warming.

The reduction of greenhouse gas emissions is considered a key factor leading to changes in manufacturing processes and consumer behaviour towards sustainability, thus mitigating the country’s overall environmental impact.

Real estate Sustainable development spurred by COVID-19 pandemic – Environment, Property, Real Estate

0

Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the real estate sector worldwide is stepping up its response to climate change and sustainable development.

At the same time, there is an increasing awareness of the environmental impact of real estate: the World Green Building Council suggests that buildings are responsible for upwards of 40% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. Investors, occupiers and real estate companies all have an equal responsibility to support and drive sustainable development.

With an aim to create a consistent agenda and definition, the World Green Building council in 2016 set up the Advancing Net Zero campaign. Since then, it has gained enough momentum and has come to influence actions of all stakeholders including governments, city councils, property owners, investors and occupiers alike.

New buildings are readily adopting low or zero carbon-heating solutions; however, the challenge will be retrofitting older buildings as this may require updating traditional energy systems, as well as changing internal layouts and facades.

Achieving net zero, both in operations and construction, will mean re-thinking the way we approach design and construction and introduce circularity in the planning phase because much of the future performance of a building is dictated by early decisions.

Designs that use fewer material and recycle steel and concrete where possible, positively impacts embodied carbon of a building.

Ultimately, the industry will need to recognize net zero not as a label but as a process that demonstrates the performance of a building maintained at net zero.

Thus, moving from a compliance focused to a performance-focused approach will become the key step in advancing the net zero agenda.

MDES to close another 220 online gambling sites

0

BANGKOK (NNT) – The Ministry of a Digital Economy and Society (MDES) is to request a court order to shut down more than 200 gambling sites. It has also instructed Thai internet service providers and mobile operators to close online gambling sites according to a court order within 15 days, or they will be charged.

Digital Economy and Society Minister Putthipong Punnakan discussed guidelines for solving the online gambling problem, with the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission Broadcasting Commission, Internet service providers of Thailand and mobile service providers at a recent meeting.

Following the meeting, the participants are jointly working to solve the problem and are taking action to disrupt the sites, by seeking court orders to close online gambling sites and instruct Internet service providers and mobile service providers to block any online gambling sites according to the court order within 15 days, or they will be prosecuted under the Computer Act B.E, 2550, Section 27, and face a fine not exceeding 200,000 baht, and daily fines of not more than 5,000 baht until they comply with the law.

This is believed to have reduced the number of online gambling sites. Meanwhile, evidence has been collected for the seeking of court orders to close an additional 220 online football betting sites. Previously, there was a court order to close 982 online gambling sites and the MDES will now submit evidence to seek court orders to close an additional 200 gambling sites.

COVID-19 increased global demand and export for medical gloves in Thailand and Malaysia

COVID-19 increased global demand and export for medical gloves in Thailand and Malaysia

As one of Thailand’s leading export products, rubber glove generated approximately USD 1,200 million per annum. COVID-19 global pandemic is Thailand’s golden opportunity for rubber glove export. During the first 4 months of 2020, export value increased to USD 449 million, an increase of 16% from the same period in 2019.

COVID-19 pandemic has generated high demand for medical gloves. Malaysia is globally the biggest producer of medical glove with production capacity of 125,000 million pieces per annum. In 2019, Malaysia’s actual production was 63,000 million pieces, reflecting the advantage in increasing production capability.

Thailand’s production capacity is 25,000 million pieces per annum and in 2019, the actual production was 85% of total production capacity. EIC noted that if these 2 countries were to increase their  medical glove production capability to the fullest, Malaysia would benefit more than Thailand.

Thailand still has indirect benefit from the increasing export of concentrated latex to Malaysia for medical glove production. During the first 4 months of 2020, export of concentrated latex from Thailand to Malaysia was USD 176 million, an increase of 7% from same period in 2019. With the continuation of COVID-19 pandemic, it is most likely that Malaysia’s demand for Thai concentrated latex will continue.

Malaysia produces natural rubber glove, a high value-added product, with imported concentrated latex from Thailand, a mid-stream product with very little added value. It is an economic lost to Thailand due to the insufficient product transformation into value-added products of concentrated latex.

AMLO is investigating four Thai banks’ alleged role in suspicious transactions

0

The ICIJ’s report refers to files leaked from the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network in the US. They allegedly indicate that many commercial banks worldwide turned a blind eye to suspicious transactions between 1999 and 2017.

The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), says that four Thai banks have been involved in suspicious financial transactions, worth about 41.31 billion baht, over nearly two decades.

Responding to the ICIJ report, AMLO Acting Secretary-General Pol Maj-Gen Preecha Charoensahayanont said today that checking suspicious financial transactions is a normal practice of AMLO, as he asked for time to verify the report.

Meanwhile, it is reported that, since the 1997 financial crisis, the Bank of Thailand has demanded information from commercial banks about their credit transactions, for risk analysis of financial institutions and economic stability.

The central bank has not, however, demanded information about financial transfers, but AMLO has been doing the risk analysis of suspicious transactions, particularly “loop” digital banking accounts.
