Lpg, Ngv Discounts Extended

BANGKOK (NNT) – The current discount campaigns on LPG and NGV will be extended by 1-3 months, according to the latest resolution from the Committee on Energy Policy Administration (CEPA).

The discount campaign on household LPG gas will be extended until September this year, from the initial campaign expiry this month. The campaign offers 45 baht discount per 15-kilogram LPG cylinder for households, making the retail price now 318 baht. Holders of the government’s welfare card will also receive 100 baht per person per month discount.

The discount for NGV gas for taxis, vans, and buses is now extended until the end of July, reducing the retail price of NGV at service stations from 13.62 baht per kilogram to 10.62 baht per kilogram.

These discounts have been extended to help aid the economy which has been affected by COVID-19 restriction measures, even after the reopening of many businesses in Phase 4 of restrictions easing.

The CEPA has also approved a new oil pricing calculation at refineries, which will result in 0.5 baht per liter reduction in retail oil prices in general. The new calculation will be effective from 17th June.

Bot Clarifies Debt Figures

BANGKOK (NNT) – Bank of Thailand clarifies misunderstanding regarding the 6 trillion baht liabilities.

Mrs. Chantavarn Sucharitakul, Assistant Governor, Communications and Corporate Relations Group, Bank of Thailand (BOT) revealed that there has been misunderstanding regarding BOT’s 6 trillion baht liabilities as public debt that will have to be repaid by future generations.

The BOT wishes to clarify that BOT’s financial statements reflect activities of the BOT associated with its central banking operations. When there is excess liquidity in the financial system the BOT absorbs the excess liquidity via instruments such as BOT bonds.

Conversely the BOT inject liquidity back into the system through reduction in BOT bond issuance to maintain an appropriate monetary condition. BOT’s assets and liabilities are therefore conditioned on changes in its financial operations to maintain economic stability.

Like other central banks, the liabilities in the BOT’s account are not considered as public debt, and will not pose fiscal burden on the country. The liabilities shown in BOT’s financial statements are merely reflection of its liquidity management activities.

The COVID-19 pandemic will shrink the global economy by 5.2 per cent this year, representing the deepest recession since World War Two, and triggering a dramatic rise in extreme poverty, the World Bank said Monday in its latest Global Economic Prospects report.

Per-capita output will contract in more than 90% of countries, the biggest share since 1870. This decline may push 70 million to 100 million people into extreme poverty, Ceyla Pazarbazioglu, the World Bank’s vice president of equitable growth, finance and institutions, told reporters by phone.

Emerging and developing economies will shrink 2.5%, their worst performance in data that starts in 1960, it said.
