TAT supports TCEB’s Thailand MICE Venue Standard certification

Bangkok – The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) recently attended a publicity event hosted by the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) to enhance the industry awareness of its Thailand MICE Venue Standard (TMVS) as well as its key role in the development of ASEAN MICE Venue Standard (AMVS).

Ms. Sadudee Sangnil, Director of TAT’s International Public Relations Division (left), and representatives from TCEB as well as the public and private sector partners at the recent industry event on TMVS.

Mr. Yuthasak Supasorn, Governor of TAT said, “TAT has been aware of the TMVS certification over the years and is very proud that Thailand has been approved by the ASEAN tourism ministers to lead the development of the AMVS. We would like to encourage operators of MICE venues in Thailand to apply for this certification and be a part of helping to upgrade Thailand’s MICE and hospitality industry to an international standard.”

TCEB launched the TMVS certification in 2014 and became the first in ASEAN to initiate such recognition. It also pushed forward a regional standard for MICE venues and received approval at the 43rd Meeting of ASEAN Tourism Ministers to include the TMVS in the 10-year ASEAN Tourism Strategic Plan (2016-2025) with Thailand, through TCEB, designated to lead the development of the AMVS.

To-date, the number of locations across Thailand that have been certified using TMVS total 453 venues in three categories – Meeting Rooms (397 venues totalling 1,093 rooms), Exhibition Venues (25 venues totaling 29 halls), and Special Event Venues (31 spaces).

Among the TMVS certified venues and establishments are the Dusit Princess Srinakarin Hotel, Dusit Thani Hua Hin Hotel, Sampran Riverside (Suan Sampran), Centara Grand Hotel at CentralWorld and Royal Paragon Hall.

In addition, Thai MICE venues that have received the AMVS certification in the Meeting Rooms category accounted for 33 venues nationwide (as of January, 2019).

Facebook Thailand launches fake news checker

0

BANGKOK (NNT) – To curb the proliferation of fake news on social media, causing misunderstandings among the general public, Facebook Thailand has initiated action.

Facebook Thailand has launched a fake news checker function, to reduce the spread of fake news and help improve the quality of online content. The check function was developed by Facebook and AFP news agency, and certified by the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN), which will verify the content, images, and videos posted on Facebook. Posts which are found to be fake news, or to have misleading titles, will have their visibility adjusted downwards. Users will receive a warning when trying to share flagged posts. Pages found to be sharing fake news will also have their visibility reduced, and will not be allowed to use revenue functions, and may face termination.

The function uses AI technology, along with AFP reporters in 10 countries of the region. The function will soon be able to screen contents in Thai.

A lecturer at Chualongkorn University’s Faculty of Communication Arts, Ms Pijitra Suppasawatgul, said today the spread of misinformation and fake news online is growing, and will have more severe effects when related to important situation or events. The use of the checker tool by Facebook can only partially mitigate the problem, while the overall issue requires the cooperation of the general public, the government, and other online social media platforms.

Bringing back clean water in Ratchaburi’s Mae Klong river

0

RATCHABURI (NNT) – Moving on to the issue of foul water in Ratchaburi City, which has long been an issue faced by villagers, especially in the rainy season when waste water would flow into the Mae Khlong river. Villagers and conservationists in Ratchaburi have made complaints to local MPs, who have forwarded the issue to the Wastewater Management Authority which promised to work with the municipality to solve the problem over the past 15 years.

During a visit to Ratchaburi City Municipality’s water treatment facility in Khu Bua district by the Wastewater Management Authority’s (WMA) Director General Chira Wongburana, the WMA chief found the water treatment facility is not working at maximum efficiency, leaving some untreated water to flow into Mae Khlong river at Khlong Farang and Khlong Khang Wat Chong Lom canals, while the water treatment facility at Rachanokroh bridge often fails to function.

A discussion was held, in which the WMA agreed to make surveys, renovate, and repair the existing water treatment system for the city, and expand the sewage network to cover the ring road surrounding the city, as well as allocate budget and personnel to manage waste water treatment with the city municipality for 15 years.

Ratchaburi City Municipality has agreed to support the costs involved. The WMA will cover the costs in the first year of operations by itself should the municipality be unable to provide support. The agreement requires the municipality to pay the costs in the 2nd to 4th year. Both organizations will split the cost equally after the 5th year should the municipality fail to find suficient funding.

IMF and SCB lower Thai growth forecast under 3%

Thailand Business News

Siam Commercial Bank’s (SCB) Economics Intelligence Center (EIC) has adjusted its Thailand 2019 economic growth projection from 3 percent down to 2.8 percent.

The center has reported that domestic consumption is showing signs of a slowdown, especially in the private sector, as seen from lower sales of housing and motor vehicles, while financial institutions have become more stringent when offering loans, due to higher household debt.

Siam Commercial Bank’s (SCB) Economics Intelligence Center (EIC) estimates the export sector this year will shrink by 2.5 percent, while the tourism sector will generate less income due to lower spending by tourists because of the higher value of the Thai Baht, despite tourist numbers reaching the 40.1 million persons goal.

The overall Thai economy however remains robust following the government’s investments in large projects and the Eastern Economic Corridor.

IMF sees Thai growth rate at 2.9% in 2019

Thailand’s economic growth rate could slow to 2.9% this year and be 3.0% in 2020 according to IMF’s latest report.

Risks to the growth outlook are tilted to the downside stemming from the impact of the global economic slowdown, current trade tensions and weak domestic demand, the IMF said.

Since December 2018, the baht has appreciated by about 5.5 percent against the U.S. dollar, making it one of the best performers in the region.

The level of reserves increased by nearly US$11 billion by end-June 2019 to US$250.3 billion, well above Fund adequacy metrics. Since May 2019, capital inflows have further accelerated, contributing to a sharper appreciation of the baht.
