Thailand aims to become Modern Agricultural Hub

0

CHIANG MAI, 06 July 2019 (NNT) – Thailand will showcase its potential to be a leader among the agricultural industries of the world at the Asia Agricultural Innovation Fair 2019; Thailand aims to become a hub of modern agriculture.

At a seminar on Agricultural Innovation in Asia, Mr. Sarawut Chantachitpreecha, an agricultural academic, Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Thailand, said the Netherlands is focused on eco-friendly agriculture which is safe for consumers, by using technology to enhance production efficiency according to the goal. The yield is two times higher and the quality is twice as good, while the use of resources is reduced two times. For Thailand, the tendency to use machinery is high but it is still concentrated in the new generation. Most large agricultural businesses and farmer groups under contract farming use technology to measure humidity and temperature and gain access to automatic control through applications on mobile phones. They also use unmanned aircraft or drones to help with chemical spraying, use a QR Code to trace production back to source and are attracted to online marketing.

In order to strengthen the role of Thai farmers and ensure Thailand becomes a trade and investment hub for machinery and agricultural innovation, the Faculty of Agriculture, Chiang Mai University has signed a memorandum of understanding with Global Exhibition and Convention Service Co., Ltd. to organize the Agricultural Innovation of Asia Fair from November 7-11, 2019, at Chiang Mai International Convention and Exhibition Center. It will feature products, services and agricultural innovations and technology, by focusing on five main branches of modern agricultural management to increase opportunities for progress with intelligent farming technology and the use of technology in farm management.

MRT to start passenger Test Runs late July on Blue Line extension

0

BANGKOK, 07 July 2019 (NNT) – The Mass Rapid Transit Authority is set to open the MRT Blue Line Thaphra extension for passenger test runs in late July.

The Mass Rapid Transit Authority (MRTA) commenced internal test runs on the MRT Blue Line’s Hua Lamphong – Bangkae extension on 1st July this year. The early phase of the test is intended to ensure the preparedness of officials to cope with situations which may arise with train operations, to test the stability of the signalling and train control systems, and to set an appropriate train speed for safety.

Once the new tracks and trains have passed the initial testing stage, the MRTA is expected to allow passengers to travel between Hua Lamphong and Thaphra station free of charge as part of the test run in late July.

More stations will incrementally be opened for free introductory trips, before the scheduled launching of the service in September this year.

During the trial, trains will run back and forth only on the new extension tracks, requiring passengers to change to another train at Hua Lamphong to travel to other stations on the current Blue Line Network.

The extension will be linked to the original section, allowing for through operations, once signalling tests on the extension are completed.

The opening of these extensions will make the Dark Blue Line the first circular line in Bangkok. This will make Bangkok a more connected city, opening new opportunities for development.

At present, the MRT Dark Blue Line is the second most popular mass transit line in Bangkok with 19 trains carrying 350,000 passengers per weekday.

The Mass Rapid Transit Authority (MRTA)…

Visitor numbers to rise 7% to 39-39.8 million in 2019 – Tourism

0

BANGKOK, 2 July 2019(NNT) – Visitor numbers in the latter half of 2019 are expected to reach 20.1 million following proactive marketing campaigns by tourism businesses to better attract tourists with different needs and purchasing power, according to KResearch.

Kasikorn Research Center Company Limited (KResearch) estimates the number of visitors to Thailand in the latter half of 2019 will be 20.1 million, higher than the figure in the first half of this year.

The forecast is however considered low compared to the previous year as the growth of international visitor numbers is expected to rise by 7% in the remaining half of this year.

The overall annual visitor number this year is now expected to be 39-39.8 million, a 2-4% increase on last year.

Annual spending by tourists in 2019 is expected to be 1.94 – 1.97 trillion baht.

This new estimate takes into consideration the ongoing revision of the base figure from 2018, and the changing behavior of international visitors this year resulting in lower spending in some tourism categories and shorter trips, as younger travelers now make more trips and visit more countries each year.

Price competition from domestic businesses and competition with other tourism countries are also taken into consideration.

For the remaining months of 2019, KResearch suggests business operators make proactive…

Princess Sirivannavari adopts Dugongs under Corals and Marine Animals Conservation project

0

BANGKOK, 06 July 2019 (NNT) – Her Royal Highness Princess Sirivannavari has adopted two orphaned dugongs under the Corals and Marine Animals Conservation project, and today named one of them.

The Department of Marine and Coastal Resources, in cooperation with the navy and related agencies, has been looking after two dugongs which were swept ashore and stranded. Her Royal Highness Princess Sirivannavari named the baby dugon found in Krabi province last weekend ’Yamil’, a Yawi word for handsome creature of the sea. Her Royal Highness has now adopted the two recently found juvenile dugongs, Mariam and Yamil, under the Corals and Aquatic Animals Conservation project.

Mariam has gradually recovered and black and white stains on her body, caused by stress, have begun to fade. Yamil, meanwhile has gained strength, though unexplained bruises remain on his body. The baby dugong is being cared for by veterinarians. The growing dugongs will need care for at least a year before they can return to the sea independently.

The Department of Marine and Coastal Resources is to conduct a study on dugongs, as some have strayed and been swept ashore, in an effort to conserve them and raise public awareness of the value of marine creatures in Thailand. No fewer than 250 dugongs are estimated to be living currently in Thai waters, mostly off Trang province.

Commerce Ministry: Prices of fishery products monitored

Commerce Ministry: Prices of fishery products monitored

BANGKOK, 4 July 2019(NNT) – The global economic slowdown has affected people’s purchasing power worldwide, but there have been no reports so far of the smuggling of fishery products which could affect prices in the Thai fishing industry .
Ms. Chutima Bunyapraphassorn, Deputy Minister of Commerce, confirmed today that the overall global economy remains in a slowdown, resulting in a decline in the overall prospects of many products including fishery products. This can be seen from the GDP figures that decreased from 3.8 percent in 2017 to 3.6 percent in 2018, directly affecting the purchasing power of consumers and causing the prices of many agricultural product types in the market to drop. As for a decline in the seafood industry, she stated that the Ministry of Commerce has cooperated with the Department of Fisheries and related agencies to monitor the Thale Thai Market, the largest wholesale market of fishery products in the country, accounting for as much as 70 percent of sales. It was found that increased imports of fish and related sea creatures include a group of aquatic products which are processed for export and are sold at restaurants, such as mackerel, salmon, trout, cod, etc. Since they are not otherwise available in this country, they don’t affect the prices of aquatic creatures caught by Thai fishing boats. Imports of octopus have also increased slightly compared to the same period last year.
Although the statistics don’t indicate that imports are unusually high, she has advised that the Ministry of Commerce has measures available to cope with the issue if the volume of imports of legal fishing products that are not IUU related, being brought into Thailand becomes unusually high and begins to affect the prices of the domestic fishing industry. Processed seafood products are important exports for Thailand, generating revenue of as much as 185 billion baht per year for the country. Thailand is the world’s No. 1 exporter of canned tuna and processed sardines.
