Seven provinces declared drought disaster zones

0

BANGKOK, 10 May 2019 (NNT) – The Hydro – Informatics Institute has reported that the water situation this year closely resembles that of 2007 with adequate supplies for daily use but a risk of insufficient for the agricultural sector. Meanwhile, the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) has declared seven provinces drought disaster zones.

The DDPM has announced that severe drought has affected Phitsanulok, Roi Et, Si Sa Ket, Nakhon Ratchasima, Maha Sarakham, Trat, and Chon Buri provinces. A total 18 districts, comprising 61 subdistricts and 439 villages are suffering from drought. The department has dispatched trucks to supply water to affected citizens and is setting up water distribution stations. It is now drafting a management plan to ensure water is evenly distributed and asked members of the public to use water sparingly until the drought season ends.

The Hydro – Informatics Institute has outlined areas at risk of severe drought between May and July this year, in the hope of spurring pre-emptive measures and to inform policy.

Institute Director Sutas Wisakul has made known that major rivers in the north have fallen to low levels with their tributaries now at critical levels. Waterways of the northeast have benefited slightly from recent storms, while rivers in the east have medium to low levels and rivers of the central region have medium to high levels and are even subject to overflows during high tide. The south’s rivers have medium to low levels of water.

Up to 10 of the country’s major dams now hold less than 30 percent of their capacity, including Ubol Ratana Dam, which has only 24 percent of its capacity and has had to expel 5.41 million cubic meters of its reserve.

Property slowdown looms over Thai market – Property, Real Estate

0

Some developing economies from Thailand to Dubai and Brazil are facing double-digit real estate sales declines on the back of weakening domestic growth, says Bloomberg.

The Thai cabinet has approved last week cutting both housing transfer and mortgage fees to 0.01% for 12 months, aiming to spur buying.

The fee cuts from 2% and 1%, respectively, will come into force after publication in the Royal Gazette and will run until May 31, 2020.

Last month, the cabinet approved offering tax deductions of up to 200,000 baht for buyers of homes and condos worth up to 5 million baht. The measure is part of new stimulus measures worth 21.83 billion baht.

But critics said the previous measure to offer tax deductions of up to 200,000 baht for buyers of homes and condos worth up to 5 million baht would have a minimal impact on the market.

Stricter mortgage-lending rules

The Bank of Thailand issued plans last October to impose stricter mortgage-lending rules in 2019 as the officials saw a frothy housing market ahead.

Colliers International said in a fourth-quarter report that it sees new condominiums falling by 24 per cent this year as unsold properties pile up, while Bloomberg Economics sees Chinese investor interest keeping a floor under demand.

Ballooning unsold inventory

A total of 454,814 residential units across the country were left unsold last year, with a total value of US$ 41 billion, according to Sopon Pornchokchai, president of the Agency for Real Estate Affairs.

The supplies in the Bangkok Metropolitan Region constituted 40% of the total units available and 55% of the total value.

These supplies included detached houses, semi-detached hoses, townhouses, shophouses, condominiums (owner-occupied apartments) and residential land subdivision catered by formal…

The major source markets are Brazil, Argentina, Mexico and Chile.

On 2 May, the Latin American trade members participated in networking and business sessions with 51 local suppliers in Bangkok representing hotels, resorts, destination management companies (DMCs), a cooking school, a transportation provider, and an entertainment company.

They would also give a market briefing on Latin America Market Insight to Thai tourisn suppliers that are interesting in this market.

Moreover, incorporation with the Faculty of Arts, Chulalongkorn University, Spanish-language students were providing liaison and assistance services during the visit to practice and prepare Thai personel for the Latin America Market.

Ms. Runjuan Tongrut, TAT Executive Director of the Americas Region said, “While currently, tourists from Latin America may still make up a small percentage of tourist arrivals in Thailand, they hold enormous promise. The cost of travelling from Latin America to Asia is relatively high, which means the customer segment comprises upper-income earners, with high spending power and long average length of stay.

“We are confident that this trade meet will eventually help boost the growth of tourists from the Latin America market even further.”

Visitors from most Latin American countries (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Peru) do not need visas to come to Thailand although there are no direct flights from any Latin American city to Bangkok.

GITSDA reports on water situation

0

BANGKOK, 8 May 2019 (NNT) – During the dry season, GISTDA has issued a report on the situation at small water sources and farm areas using satellite images, serving as initial analysis for other agencies related to water management.

In the past week, GISTDA has analysed 141,022 small surface-level ponds no larger than .32 hectares, and has discovered three provinces, namely Pathum Thani, Phichit, and Phitsanulok, to have less than 30% of their water capacity.

If the weather forecast shows rain shortages, or in the case of El-Nino which many people talk about, the water availability projection may be altered due to external factors from these conditions.

Regarding the latest situation in off-season rice farming, the latest data dated 2 May 2019 shows 1.44 million hectares of rice farm being harvested from the total 2.08 million hectares, with farms in Chao Phraya River Basin in the central region, approximately 320,000 hectares, planned for harvest later in May, except for another 320,000 hectares planned for continual rice farming in Ayutthaya, Pathum Thani, Nonthaburi, and Suphan Buri where harvest is planned for July to August, posing risk of damage from any potential water shortage or delayed start of the rainy season this year.

In comparison to overall rice farming area in 2018, the overall farmland this year is about 160,000 hectares smaller than the previous year, showing farmers’ cooperation with the government’s measures.

Political uncertainty weighs on Thailand’s consumer confidence

0

Thailand’s consumer confidence index (CCI) for the month of April plunged to 79.2 points – the lowest in 16 months.

Mr. Thanawat Pholvichai, director of the economic and business forecast centre at the University of Thai Chambers of Commerce (UTCC), said that Thai consumers were worried about several ongoing issues.

Those issues include concerns over political uncertainty, slow domestic economic recovery and the global economic slowdown.

Political uncertainty and falling farm product prices

The price reductions of numerous farm products, domestic political uncertainty, plus concern over the Brexit issue, have all combined to have an effect on the consumer confidence, said Thanawat.

However, he pointed out that the most significant negative factor for the month of April was the Fiscal Policy Office’s downward adjustment of Thailand’s 2019 growth rate projection to 3.8% from 4% and the export growth forecast from 4.5% to 3.4%.

The UTCC’s economic and business forecast centre based its report on a survey of 2,242 consumers nationwide.
