Thailand’s slow economic recovery

0
Thailand sees major drop in cost of living rankings following the effects of Covid-19

Thailand’s economic performance in the third quarter of 2020 showed promising signs of recovery amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The contraction in GDP fell to 6.4 per cent year-on-year, down from 12 per cent in the second quarter. Signs of recovery in key industries such as electronics and appliances, the automotive sector and plastics are bright spots.

The speed of economic recovery in Thailand has been slower than neighbouring countries such as Malaysia, Vietnam and China, especially in terms of industrial and service output.

Part of the reason is the inadequacy of Thailand’s policies during lockdown, particularly its tax measures and special loan initiatives to help vulnerable firms maintain cash flow and reduce costs of production.

There was also no clear policy geared directly at retaining employment in industries such as tourism that were hit hard by COVID-19.

Tax measures meant to support firms were mostly limited to tax payment deferral for three months and an acceleration of tax refunds, whereas others such as Malaysia, China, South Korea and Japan offered tax cuts. South Korea allowed tax payment deferral for nine months; Japan offered it for almost a year.

Singapore, Malaysia and Vietnam all offered wage subsidies to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to help retain employees.

Thailand’s policy was limited to reducing the contribution rate to the Social Security Fund (SSF), extending the duration of contribution form submissions and providing special funds for employment training. Fortunately, workers registered with the SSF, independent…

PM 2.5 airborne dust haze expected over Bangkok from Thursday

0

BANGKOK (NNT) – The air quality index in Bangkok is expected to stay within healthy levels for the next two days, with the next period of unhealthy air pollution likely to last from 24th to 29th December. The government is asking the public to prepare themselves for this expected accumulation of airborne particles.

The government’s Center for Air Pollution Mitigation chaired by the Office of the Prime Minister’s Permanent Secretary Theerapat Prayurasiddhi, today announced its forecast for the next period of unhealthy airborne particulate matter in Bangkok, in late December.

During this time, airborne particles will accumulate in the atmosphere as weakening winter winds coming from China will no longer be able to dissipate the haze.

Some precipitation is expected during this period, however it is not likely to be significant enough to wash PM 2.5 dust out of the atmosphere.

To help mitigate this issue, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has ordered construction works to be suspended for three days, with contractors responsible for cleaning up the road surface where they are working.

Schools under the BMA’s supervision have been instructed to cancel outdoor activities, or close temporarily in areas where the situation is severe.

Offices are asked to stagger their employees work schedule or have them work more from home, while district offices will be using water sprays to clean road surfaces and nearby trees.

The Department of Health has suggested the general public closely monitor the air quality index reported on the Air4Thai mobile app, and wear a dust-protective masks.

In areas with an air quality index ranging from unhealthy to very unhealthy, persons with a chronic disease should avoid going outside, and refrain from any outdoor activities. Villagers are also encouraged to clean up their houses and other buildings to prevent the accumulation of dust.
