Thai economy is expected to return to 4-4.5% growth in 2021

BANGKOK (NNT) – The Thai economy has been showing signs of recovery, thanks to the government’s many stimulus measures.

The Minister of Finance is expecting the economy will grow 4-4.5% next year, however it may take up to 4 years for visitor numbers to recover.

The Minister of Finance Arkhom Termpittayapaisith predicts that Thailand’s tourism sector will start to recover after the successful development and distribution of COVID-19 vaccines globally, with the number of visitors next year expected to be at least 8 million.

He said, however, that by how much the country will reopen to tourists will depend on the public health conditions, adding that it may take until 2024 for tourist numbers to return to 40 million per year.

With this prospect, the Finance Minister said the government still finds it necessary to continue stimulating domestic purchasing via co-pay campaigns, tourism subsidy campaigns and living allowances for holders of welfare cards.

The government is now considering the extension of these campaigns, however there are still no definite timeframes set for by how long these campaigns will be extended.

The Minister of Finance said the government also needs to provide capital support for SMEs, so they have the liquidity they need to continue their businesses.

On public sector investments, Minister Arkhom said the government will be accelerating digital infrastructure investment and promoting investments in its s-curve industries, particularly the technology and digital industries, eco-friendly, healthcare and medical services industries.

The government is also to consider imposing tariffs on online…

Thailand pushes for “Ease of Doing Business” reforms

0

The government has made improving the business environment in Thailand a key policy by setting a goal to raise the ranking of the ease of doing business to be among the top 20 countries in the world.

Thailand has made some very impressive gains in recent years in the World Bank’s Ease of Doing Business index, moving from 46th to 26th to 21st position in recent years.

But by implementing 10 measures, the Foreign Chambers Alliance (FCA) predicts Thailand could quickly move into the top 10 of the World Bank index.

Five ambassadors have recently urged to open up Thailand to foreign skilled labour and cut red tape on foreign investment to allow Thailand to move into the top 10 of the World’s Bank’s ease of doing business index.

Thailand is in the process of responding to the World Bank’s advice and the “Ten for Ten” proposal by five ambassadors to Thailand, according to Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Supattanapong Punmeechaow.

Real estate Sustainable development spurred by COVID-19 pandemic – Environment, Property, Real Estate

0

Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the real estate sector worldwide is stepping up its response to climate change and sustainable development.

At the same time, there is an increasing awareness of the environmental impact of real estate: the World Green Building Council suggests that buildings are responsible for upwards of 40% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. Investors, occupiers and real estate companies all have an equal responsibility to support and drive sustainable development.

With an aim to create a consistent agenda and definition, the World Green Building council in 2016 set up the Advancing Net Zero campaign. Since then, it has gained enough momentum and has come to influence actions of all stakeholders including governments, city councils, property owners, investors and occupiers alike.

New buildings are readily adopting low or zero carbon-heating solutions; however, the challenge will be retrofitting older buildings as this may require updating traditional energy systems, as well as changing internal layouts and facades.

Achieving net zero, both in operations and construction, will mean re-thinking the way we approach design and construction and introduce circularity in the planning phase because much of the future performance of a building is dictated by early decisions.

Designs that use fewer material and recycle steel and concrete where possible, positively impacts embodied carbon of a building.

Ultimately, the industry will need to recognize net zero not as a label but as a process that demonstrates the performance of a building maintained at net zero.

Thus, moving from a compliance focused to a performance-focused approach will become the key step in advancing the…

Leatherback turtle eggs moved to safer spot

0

PHANG NGA (NNT) – The authorities have rushed to relocate 130 leatherback turtle eggs laid at a beach in Phang Nga to a safer spot. There are 130 eggs in total and 114 of them are fertile.

Mr Prachuap Mokharat, Director of the Marine Resource Conservation Division, and authorities from relevant agencies inspected the traces of a large turtle that had laid eggs on Khuk Khak Beach, Moo 6, Khuekkhak subdistrict, Takua Pa district, Phang Nga province, after being informed by a local fisherman who was looking for krill on the beach.

The authorities found that the sixth leatherback turtle egg nest was at a spot that lacked sunlight and was near many tree roots. The eggs were relocated to a safer place which is about 25-30 meters away from the original spot. It is an open area where possible threats can be seen at all times. The authorities installed a thermometer which will be able to predict the time when the baby turtles will be hatched. The eggs usually take about 45-60 days to hatch. A fence was set up around the new nest site which will be continually monitored. Phang Nga Leatherback Turtle Situation Surveillance and Monitoring Center will supervise the incubation of the leatherback turtle eggs according to academic principles, in order to ensure a high hatch rate so that the baby turtles can be safely released into the sea.

Why 5G is racing ahead in Asia – Real Estate, Tech

0

Asia Pacific is leading the charge for the next generation of mobile connectivity. Major cities across the region are rolling out 5G networks this year, which are poised to reshape connectivity and big data with blazing-fast download speeds.

Hong Kong, Seoul, Sydney, Taipei, Manila, Tokyo and Shenzhen have already introduced 5G networks. In May, Bangkok became the first city in Southeast Asia to roll out a 5G network, while Singapore in August started a six-month trial.

“With more than half of the world’s Internet users situated in Asia Pacific – a majority of whom only use mobile devices – it is highly likely that most of tomorrow’s digital tools will come from the region and be shaped by the population’s mobile-first habits”.

Jordan Kostelac, director of proptech, JLL Asia Pacific

With 1.14 billion subscribers, Asia Pacific is the largest region for 5G adoption. It could account for almost 65 percent of global 5G subscriptions by 2024, according to technology analyst GlobalData.

Governments and businesses are keen to take advantage of 5G technology. High-speed connectivity, reduced latency and greater reliability open up the potential for more widespread digitalisation of industries and allow businesses better access to the benefits of the internet of things (IoT), artificial intelligence and big data.

“In previous generations of wireless internet, download speeds were the focus because information was largely stored on individual devices,” says Kostelac. “Cloud computing has shifted this requirement to focus on more upstream bandwidth. With greater capacity, 5G networks allow exponentially more data to be collected and organised to train AI and automate more of everything humans…
