Developing Asia’s Economy to Contract 0.7% in 2020 (ADB)

Developing Asia’s Economy to Contract 0.7% in 2020 (ADB)

The Asian Development Outlook (ADO) 2020 Update forecasts -0.7% gross domestic product (GDP) growth for developing Asia this year—marking its first negative economic growth since the early 1960s.

Growth will rally to 6.8% in 2021, in part because growth will be measured relative to a weak 2020. This will still leave next year’s output below pre-COVID-19 projections, suggesting an “L”-shaped rather than a “V”-shaped recovery. About three-quarters of the region’s economies are expected to post negative growth in 2020.

Key Messages

  • Developing Asia will contract by 0.7% this year, its first contraction in six decades. Growth will rebound to 6.8% in 2021.
  • The downturn is broad-based—three-fourths of the region’s economies are expected to contract this year. The People’s Republic of China (PRC) is an important exception.
  • Depressed demand and low oil prices offset supply disruptions, keeping regional inflation at 2.9% in 2020, and trimming it to 2.3% in 2021.

Thailand to contract 8% this year

Thailand’s economy is expected to shrink by 8%, compared to 6.5% in the previous ADB assessment.

Strict quarantines and travel restrictions inflicted brutal second-quarter economic declines in the subregion, requiring steep downgrades to GDP growth forecasts for almost every economy.

The quarter featured double-digit contractions in Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand, all of which are now expected to shrink by or more this year.

“Most economies in the Asia and Pacific region can expect a difficult growth path for the rest of 2020,” said ADB Chief Economist Yasuyuki…

The RDCA will contribute to strengthening ties and continuing links of friendship between ASEAN and the United States, advancing sustainable and inclusive growth and development. It will encourage rule-based systems in support of a peaceful, secure and prosperous ASEAN, in line with the ASEAN Community Vision 2025, the ASEAN-U.S. Plan of Action (2021-2025) and the Joint Statement of the ASEAN-U.S. Special Summit.

In his opening remarks, Dato Lim Jock Hoi said, “the U.S. shall continue to be one of ASEAN’s key dialogue partners in our Community building efforts.  We look forward to the implementation of projects and programmes to be supported by the RDCA in response to our current and emerging challenges.”

New Covid infection thwarts Thailand’s reopening plan – Tourism

0

The government’s plan to reopen the resort island of Phuket as a model to welcome back foreign visitors has been shelved, as the country last week logged the first case of local Covid-19 infection more than 100 days.

The Tourism and Sports Minister, Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, has traveled to Phuket to seek views and suggestions from local residents concerning plans to reopen the province to foreign tourists. Their input will be submitted to Prime Minister and Defense Minister, Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha, for consideration.

Under the Phuket model, floated by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, about 200 visitors from Australia and New Zealand would be allowed to travel to Phuket. However, they must first test negative for the virus in their country of origin and stay in quarantine for 14 days at designated places in Phuket.

But after meeting Phuket residents, the Tourism and Sports Minister said they wanted a public hearing to take place because a number of people disagreed with the plan to reopen the province to foreign tourists.

Meanwhile, the government is also organizing trips to Phuket and other provinces for expats and diplomats. Recently, the government arranged a tour for this group to visit Khung Bang Kachao in Phra Pradaeng district, Samut Prakan province.

Last week, a 37-year-old male prison inmate was tested positive for Covid-19…

BANGKOK(NNT)-Thai manufacturers have been urged to seize the opportunity to export medical products reported by the US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) to be in short supply. The listed products such as examination gowns, surgical gowns and patient examination gloves can be produced in Thailand.

The USFDA had recently announced a list of 20 products that are at risk of being in short supply in the United States due to the Covid-19 crisis. Thailand is capable of manufacturing these medical products, so it is seen as a great opportunity for Thai companies to make and export such items to the United States.

Thai manufacturers should study the USFDA’s regulations and product standards guidance to make sure that their products meet the required standard before being exported.
