LAMPANG(NNT) – In an attempt to improve the efficiency of electricity generation and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) has joined hands with Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) and Marubeni to implement Japanese digital technology to improve the operations at Mae Mo Power Plant units 11 and 13 in Lampang.

This cooperation is supported by the Japanese government to find digital solutions in both hardware and software to maximize the efficiency of power plant operations and maintenance, as well as reducing operational costs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This will help increase the plant’s competitiveness and improve national energy security.

EGAT’s Deputy Governor Nutthavutthi Chamchang said units number 11 and 13 at Mae Mo power plant currency have a capacity of 300 megawatt each. The units use lignite as fuel, sourced from a local mine. The implementation of new technologies will help the plants operate more efficiently, reduce maintenance costs, and reduce 14,000 tons of carbondioxide emission each year.

A new analysis system will also be implemented to calculate financial worthiness, risks and production opportunities.

This is part of NEDO’s project to facilitate private-sector-led promotion of low-carbon technology overseas, in cooperation with Marubeni. The Thai government is determined to reduce carbon emissions, in compliance with the Paris Agreement within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, one of the efforts is the refurbishment of existing power plants.

7 million jobs at risk in post-Covid-19 Thailand

Shutdowns from the pandemic could trigger a tsunami of job losses in Thailand especially for employees who don’t have a regular salary, low-paid workers and people without a written contract.

The Joint Standing Committee on Commerce, Industry and Banking (JSCCIB) says that as much as 7 million workers could be out of a job by June because of shutdowns from the pandemic.

The committee said most of the layoffs will affect low-paid workers, with 6 million out of the 7 million workers losing their jobs earning less than 20,000 baht a month, according to a Bangkok Post report.

The worst-case scenario is for employees who don’t have a regular salary in the tourism industry, like people who either work on short-term contracts or even without them. This includes guides, but also employees of parking contractors, cleaners working in shops, waiters in restaurants, suppliers of vegetables, meat and flowers to the hotels among others.

Most of these workers can be fired without notice or severance : a vast majority of daily-wage earners and informal sector labourers fall into this bracket. Their pain can be seen on Twitter and television feeds showing videos of hundreds of migrant workers travelling back to their villages after Bangkok decided to shut down restaurants and bars.

An estimated 4.2 million retail and shopping mall workers will lose their jobs, along with 1 million construction workers, 978,000 hotel workers, 250,000 restaurant workers, 200,000 spa and massage workers and 200,000 garment factory workers

Payments To Older Fund Suspended For One Year

BANGKOK(NNT) – The National Older Persons Commission has resolved to suspend payments to its fund for one year, to aid low-income senior citizens.

Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister, Jurin Laksanawisit, who chaired the commission’s latest meeting, says some 41,000 senior citizens who took out loans with the Older Fund to support their careers, will have their debt repayments suspended for a year, from April 1 this year to March 31 next year. Those who want to access the privilege must identify themselves to the fund, their provincial Social Development and Human Security offices or fill out an applicable form. One person providing collateral and two witnesses must sign, or be present at the reporting, with the eligible individual also required to present their identification card and a signed copy. The Deputy Prime Minister said he has ordered relevant offices to make the process convenient for those eligible.

On claims that the budget to provide welfare payments to 4.84 million eligible senior citizens is not sufficient, the commission acknowledged that the Department of Older Persons has requested the Bureau of the Budget ask the cabinet to allot 689 million baht.

The commission then approved a range of measures to accommodate the aging society covering the four dimensions of economics, the environment, health and society. Among the measures is a proposal to allow children under 15 years of age to register with the National Savings Fund and have their parents make payments on their behalf; for local administrations to be empowered to drive life quality enhancement efforts; improvements to care for professionals who are senior citizens, and for every district to be provided with a health rehabilitation center. All the measures are now pending cabinet approval.

CHIANG MAI(NNT) – Forest fires and weather conditions in the northern region of Thailand remain critical, with an increasing number of hotspots being detected in Mae Taeng district of Chiang Mai province.
Chiang Mai authorities have asked members of the Eagle Center Thailand to help firefighters extinguish numerous hotspots in Mae Taeng district. Twenty-four hotspots were identified in the district. A command center in charge of addressing dust particles in Chiang Mai reported that 114 hotspots were identified in five districts of the northern province. However, the number of hotspots is expected to decline.

The Governor of Chiang Mai, Charoenrit Sanguansat, has instructed the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office in Chiang Mai to direct officials in all districts to survey agricultural, community and forest areas and collect relevant information, which will be used to develop a fire prevention and control plan.

The Director of the Northern Meteorolgical Center, Thanawut Panchapornudomlap, said today that dust particles have accumulated due to stagnant air circulation and haze drifting in from neighboring countries. Because of Chiang Mai’s mountainous terrain, higher temperatures during the day cause the air on mountain slopes to elevate. The air eventually cools and condenses on dust particles to form clouds. Improved weather conditions are expected soon.

The Northern Royal Rainmaking Operations Center has dispatched planes to assess weather conditions in Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lampang and Phayao, and found that the upper northern region still has low humidity levels and high air pressure. If the conditions are favorable, the center will be able to conduct operations to alleviate the haze situation next week.

According to the Pollution Control Department, air quality in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai provinces remained at unsafe levels this morning. Levels of particulate matter of 2.5 microns or less in diameter (PM2.5) in the air reached 180 micrograms per cubic meter in Chiang Dao district of Chiang Mai province; 112 micrograms per cubic meter in Muang Chiang Rai district of Chiang Rai provincel; 165 micrograms per cubic meter in Chiang Rai’s Mae Sai district and 132 micrograms per cubic meter in Muang Mae Hong Son district of Mae Hong Son province

March Inflation Hits 51 Month Low

BANGKOK (NNT) – The inflation rate of the Thai economy has been reduced sharply by lower oil prices and a lesser demand for goods due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This situation has caused the March 2020 inflation rate to recede to 0.54 percent, marking the first recession in 33 months, and the lowest inflation rate in 51 months. The country’s inflation rate this year is now expected to drop to 0.6 percent, from the previous projection of 0.8 percent growth.

The Trade Policy and Strategy Office (TPSO) has revealed the Thai economy’s inflation rate in March 2020 was a negative 0.54 percent, making the overall rate for Q1 2020 0.41 percent higher than the previous year.

TPSO’s Director General Pimchanok Vonkorpon said today the global economic implications of the COVID-19 pandemic and the falling energy price have been the main factors affecting inflation in this year’s first quarter, however there is still no indication as to when these issues will be resolved.

The inflation rate in Q2 is expected to continue receding through to the second half of the year.

The Ministry of Commerce has readjusted the 2020 inflation rate projection to a negative 0.6 percent, within a range of -1.0 to -0.2 percent. The inflation rate this year was initially expected to be 0.8 percent, within a range of 0.4 to 1.2 percent.

Pricing of some products such as limes and chicken eggs has recently risen due to the drought disaster and panic buying. This situation allowed fresh food items to grow at 2.46 percent, albeit the lowest performance in a year. This is due to lower demand from fewer tourists, and the closure of shops and schools.

The pricing of instant meals, condiments, and personal items is still stable, with variations resulting from promotions by modern trade retailers.

Thailand’s Export To Contract By 7% In 2020

The Bank of Thailand and the Center for International Trade Studies at the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) forecast exports to contract by 7-8 percent this year.

The Center for International Trade Studies at the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce said that under the worst-case scenario in which the coronavirus crisis exceeds nine months (beyond September), exports could contract by as much as 7.1% in 2020.

Thailand’s export value contracted by 2.7 percent to 246.25 billion USD in 2019 but the COVID-19 pandemic could remove 17.42 billion USD from Thai export value this year, showing the sector’s worst performance in a decade.

However, if the crisis is contained in September, the downturn could be limited to -3.7%.

The Trade Policy and Strategy Office (TPSO) has indicated that the gross value of Thai exports in 2019 was 246.244 billion U.S. dollars, showing a 2.65 percent decline from the previous year due to the U.S.-China trade war and the strong Thai baht.

BANGKOK (NNT) – Bangkok’s premier department stores, The Emporium and Emquartier, have introduced innovative Em-Auto Sanitizing Gates to reassure visitors of their safety from the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

The gates are tunnels that spray those entering with a disinfectant only three microns in size, which can penetrate clothing to coat different surfaces, while not threatening human health. Children under one year of age and pregnant women nonetheless should not undergo the treatment.

The gates were introduced in February alongside thermos-scanning. Both preventative measures are to stay in place until the COVID-19 situation is resolved.

Inside the malls, areas for ordering takeaway food have been set up, while their supermarkets remain open.

The disinfectant tunnel joins the Faculty of Engineering at Thammasat University’s “Tham-Robot” as innovations borne of the COVID-19 pandemic. The robot is the world’s first designed to shuttle medication and medical equipment throughout a hospital. It has been deployed at Thammasat University Rangsit Campus’ field hospital and promotes social distancing between humans by allowing for remote operation. More are being produced to aid other hospitals.
