Pm Orders Egg Price Monitoring

BANGKOK (NNT) – Since the invocation of the Emergency Decree over COVID-19, many people have been stocking up with necessary items, including chicken eggs, resulting in shortages in some areas, and some sellers have been exploiting this situation by profiteering.

Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha has ordered the Ministry of Commerce to investigate and prevent the exploitation of the situation for profit. The Ministry will be investigating the entire egg supply chain, from farms to the hands of customers, ensuring fairness to all.

Officials from the Ministry of Commerce have inspected Kanokwan Farm, a large chicken egg producer in Nakhon Sawan, reported to be selling eggs at unreasonably high prices. They have filed a report at Nong Krod Police Station to launch formal prosecution.

The officials have also inspected Chanomporn Farm in Nakhon Pathom, where the owner has admitted to selling eggs above the regular price, raising it to 3.8 baht from 2.8 baht per egg. The farm was still selling 300,000 eggs at the time of inspection.

In Phitsanulok, commercial affairs officials have inspected an egg shop in Phitsanulok city, located by the railway, after receiving complaints from the public alleging that the shop sells a pack of eggs at 140 baht, which is considerably higher than the regular price.

The shop has been charged with a violation to the Price of Goods and Services Act BE 2542, which could result in up to 7 years imprisonment, or up to 140,000 baht in fines, or both.

Bot Says Thailand’s Economy To Shrink By 5.3 Per Cent

Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, the Thai economy would contract significantly in 2020 and headline inflation would become negative, said the Bank of Thailand in a Press Release.

According to the Bank of Thailand’s latest data release, Thailand’s GDP could contract by 5.3 per cent in 2020, a sharp lowering from its 2.8 per cent previous projections in December.

Nonetheless, the financial system was sound overall, with financial markets starting to function normally. Headline inflation is also forecast to contract in negative value with -1 per cent instead of 0.8% previous projections.

Policy rate at 0.75 percent

The Committee viewed that targeted measures designed to address liquidity needs would be of great importance. Most members thus voted to maintain the policy rate at this meeting. However, two members voted to cut the policy rate by 0.25 percentage point due to the significant economic contraction.

The Committee viewed that the Thai economy would markedly contract in 2020 as tourist figures and merchandise exports were severely affected by the COVID-19 outbreak, the slowdown of trading partner economies, and supply chain disruptions in many countries.

According to data released by the Bank of Thailand, tourism is now down from 100 000 to a mere 1,800 daily entries.

For 2021, Thailand’s central bank expects the economy to bounce back with growth of 3 per cent.

Bma, Mrt Rolled Out Social Distancing Measures

BANGKOK (NNT) – The Metropolitan Rapid Transit (MRT) has rolled out a social distancing measure by placing lines to separate passengers by a distance of at least one meter, to help contain the spread of COVID-19. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has encouraged people to be disciplined and follow the health authorities’ advice.

The BMA has asked people in Bangkok to cooperate by not traveling outside the capital until the situation improves. Those who have visited at-risk areas should stay home. It urges government agencies, state enterprises and private firms to allow their employees to work in shifts or work from home. Seminars, exhibitions, entertainment activities and other social events have been postponed or canceled. The public transport sector has been asked to reduce passenger congestion.

The Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) and the Bangkok Expressway and Metro Public Company Limited (BEM) have jointly rolled out a social distancing measure. Passengers using the MRT Chaloem Ratchamongkhon line, or the MRT Blue line, and the MRT Chalong Ratchadham line, or the MRT Purple line, are separated by a distance of at least a meter. The lines to separate the passengers are placed in various areas, including ticket offices, ticket vending machines, platforms and passenger elevators. The passengers are encouraged to wear a protective mask at all times while using its services.

At Hua Lamphong Railway Station in Bangkok, there are now fewer passengers returning to their home provinces. To restore their confidence, officials are ensuring cleanliness and sanitation throughout the station and on its trains. The passengers are encouraged to follow the public health guidelines strictly, to help prevent the virus from spreading.

Yesterday, 8,305 people bought train tickets online. As of this morning, the number had decreased to 3,710.

Thammasat University Hospital has joined hands with other teaching hospitals to open a special hospital converted from student accommodation for COVID-19 patients at Thammasat University’s Rangsit campus. The hospital will be admitting its first 10 patients referred from Ramathibodi Hospital.

This is DLUXX student residence located in Thammasat University’s Rangsit campus. It has now been converted into a special hospital which can accommodate up to 300 patients with COVID-19.

Thammasat University Hospital director said today the 13-storey building is being converted from a student residence into a hospital, with an entirely new CCTV system allowing patient monitoring from inside and outside the building. The hospital will be accepting COVID-19 patients who have already been admitted for 48-72 hours and are exhibiting only mild symptoms. They will be referred for recovery at this hospital until they test negative for the virus.

The makeshift hospital will only be accepting patients transferred from university hospitals, namely Siriraj Hospital, Vajira Hospital, Ramathibodi Hospital, King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital, in addition to Thammasat University Hospital. NAKHON NAYOK (NNT) – Forest fires continue to ravage Nakhon Nayok province, particularly Khao Falami in Khao Phra subdistrict, which is near Khao Yai National Park. Officers have rushed to extinguish the fires and prevent them from spreading into Khao Yai National Park. However, fires have now been detected in some areas of the national park.

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation deployed helicopters to contain the fires in Khao Falami by using water from Huai Prue Reservoir in Nakhon Nayok. At present, plumes of smoke can still be seen in the area.

Wildfires were also detected near Sai Thong Reservoir in Khao Phra subdistrict. The area is part of Khao Yai National Park. Forest officials used water from Huai Prue and Sai Thong reservoirs to fight the blaze. Military helicopters were deployed to transport water to the location. Officials inspected the forest areas to bring the situation under control. Fire trucks were deployed to prevent the fires from spreading into nearby communities.

Khao Falami is about four kilometers from the Chulachomklao Royal Military Academy (CRMA). It is also close to Khao Yai National Park. The fires spread quickly because the central province has seen no rain for over four months, and dry leaves are potential fuel for forest fires.

Fires were still spreading today in Khao Mot Daeng and Khao Kwang in Khao Yai National Park. Relevant units rushed to prevent the fires from spreading deeper into the forests. They had already affected the habitat of wild animals. Helicopters were deployed to conduct aerial inspections in Khao Kwang and found that the area is a bamboo forest with strong winds and low humidity at present. A team of 45 firefighters from the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation from the provinces of Nakhon Ratchasima, Ubon Ratchathani and Khon Kaen were dispatched to extinguish the fires in Khao Kwang.

If the fires continue spreading, they could reach Khao Samo Pun. The location has a treking route and is known for many varieties of flowers. Deeper into Khao Samo Pun is a rainforest that is home to many plant species and wild animals. If the flames continue to spread, they could have an adverse impact on natural resources and wildlife.
