Italian Cruise Ship Passengers Not Permitted To Enter Phuket

PHUKET(NNT) – Thai authorities in Phuket, a major tourist destination on the Andaman coast in the south of Thailand, this week declined to allow passengers and crew members of an Italian cruise ship to land in Phuket, as a precautionary measure to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

The Italian cruise liner, Costa Fortuna, has been at anchor in Phuket since Friday (March 6th), carrying 1,631 passengers and 984 crew members.

The original schedule showed the passengers would be allowed to enter and visit tourist attractions on the island. However, relevant state agencies conducted a risk assessment, and decided not to grant them permission to land, as some of the passengers may pose a risk of spreading the virus.

The cruise ship was permitted to anchor two miles offshore, and to leave Thai waters on Saturday (March 7th) as previously scheduled.

BANGKOK (NNT) – People in Bangkok have less to worry about when it comes to levels of particulate matter of 25 microns or less in diameter (PM2.5), as overall air quality in most areas of the capital has improved. The northern region continues to record lower PM2.5 levels, as wind has dispersed accumulated air pollutants. However, the concentration of dust particles is still above the safe limit in some locations.

The Director-General of the Pollution Control Department, Pralong Dumrongthai, said today very good air quality was reported in Bangkok and neighboring provinces. Levels of PM2.5 decreased due to stronger winds, and rainfall in some areas.

According to the Pollution Control Department’s Air4Thai website, PM2.5 levels measured between 29 and 93 micrograms per cubic meter in the North. Overall air quality ranged from moderate to good in most areas. However, PM2.5 levels were above the safe limit in four locations. Muang Mae Hong Son district of Mae Hong Son province recorded the highest level at 93 micrograms per cubic meter. Other locations were Mae Sai district in Chiang Rai province, Muang Chiang Mai district in Chiang Mai province and Muang Kamphaeng Phet district in Kamphaeng Phet province.

In Northeastern Thailand, fine dust pollution still reached unhealthy levels in Muang Khon Kaen district of Khon Kaen province.

Thai Banks Slash Growth Forecast Around 2%

As the number of coronavirus cases continues to rise around the world, there are deep concerns over the potential economic impact of the virus.

The virus originated in China, and given the size of China’s economy, a slowdown there from the COVID-19 outbreak will spill over to the rest of the ASEAN+3 region.

The ASEAN+3 Macroeconomic Research Office (AMRO) estimates that the COVID-19 epidemic could deduct as much as half a percentage point from the economic growth of some regional economies in 2020.

Outside of China, the impact is also being felt in the rest of the ASEAN+3 economic bloc, which comprises the 10 member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations as well as China, Japan and South Korea — through three main channels.

Disruption to travel, tourism and related industries

The most immediate impact on the region has been the disruption to travel, tourism and related industries. Flight suspensions, travel advisories, restrictions and bans on visitors from China, China’s order to stop outbound travel groups and a more cautious approach to travel owing to fear of contagion have all led to a sharp drop in tourism in the region — both Chinese tourists as well as those from other countries.

During the SARS outbreak in 2002–2003, tourism from China to countries such as Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines dropped by as much as 50 to 90 per cent before rebounding fully the following year.

But regional economies have become much more dependent on Chinese tourism since then. Today, visitors from China make up around 40 per cent of all tourist arrivals in the region — up from less…

Thai Economy Continued On A Decelerating Trend In January

Southern Chambers of Commerce have proposed that the government promote tourism in the southern region after suffering from COVID-19 fears and air pollution; they also asked airlines to increase domestic capacity following the decline in international demand for flights.

Mr Salin Tohtubthieng, President of the Chambers of Commerce group from southern Andaman provinces, said the Thai economy and the tourism sector are now suffering from the development of the COVID-19 epidemic, air pollution concerns, and low farm product pricing.

He said the government must now boost the country’s positive image regarding COVID-19, as there has so far been no case of mortality in the country, with more and more confirmed patients now recovered, and no significant rise of patient numbers.

Mr Salin said the southern region is now entering summer, when the hot weather might help slowdown the spread of the virus, so the government can encourage more Thai people to travel domestically, such as to Trang province rated in the top 5 Asian tourism destinations with the best weather.

He also asked the government to encourage local authorities to make field trips to other communities in different regions to study one another’s work, which will help fortify the tourism sector, while airlines affected by the capacity cut to international services, should sell those empty seats on domestic services instead.
