BANGKOK (NNT) – News about factory workers in Pathum Thani and a department store employee in the Phloenchit area of Bangkok being infected with COVID-19 has been found by the Ministry of Public Health to be fake news.

The online news claimed there might be more than one factory in Pathum Thani province where workers were reported to have been infected with COVID-19 and the government was accused of concealing it, prompting the Ministry of Public Health to announce that no COVID-19 patients have been found in that area.

The online news also claimed that a Central Embassy employee has been infected with COVID-19, prompting the department store to make an inquiry with the Ministry of Public Health which assured there has not been an infection reported. Central Embassy has taken measures for the health and safety of its employees and customers and announced any employees, who might have a fever, can take leave. Members of the public are advised to not believe such fake news or share or post it online and to visit www.antifakenewscenter.com

Bot Expects 3% Economic Growth In 2021

BANGKOK(NNT) – The Bank of Thailand has released its latest overview of the Thai economy, which it expects will grow more than 3 percent in 2021. Meanwhile the latest report by the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) reports 2.4 percent growth in 2019, but has downgraded 2020 GDP growth to only 1.5-2.5 percent.

These figures are lower than the previous expectations issued by the Bank of Thailand last December, when it expected 2019 to close with 2.5 percent growth, and foresaw 2020 GDP of 2.8 percent this year.

The low performing economy is affected by the drought disaster, delay of the 2020 government budget, and the unexpected outbreak of COVID-19 since late January, which has been an extraordinary development beyond the expectations of any observer.

The Bank of Thailand will be adjusting the new economic forecast on 25th March, prior to which it will be monitoring the development and effects of the COVID-19 virus which has had a significant negative impact this year. The bank expects the virus to cause most damage in Q1, before the situation gradually improves later.

The bank is confident the Thai economy will swing back and expand at more than 3 percent by 2021, should there be no additional negative factors.

Unhealthy air quality in Greater Bangkok’s 62 areas

0

BANGKOK(NNT) – The Pollution Control Department’s Director General, Pralong Dumrongthai has revealed the amount of PM2.5 airborne particulate matter measured in Bangkok and neighbouring provinces on February 25, ranges from 54 to 88 micrograms per cubic meter, with 62 locations having an Orange alert indiciating unhealthy air quality.

The highest concentrations of PM 2.5 dust today were recorded in Aom Noi subdistrict of Samut Sakhon, Pak Nam subdistrict of Samut Prakan, Bang Sao Thong subdistrict of Samut Prakan, by Nawamin Road in Bang Kapi district of Bangkok, Khlong Sam Wa district of Bangkok, Khlong Toei district of Bangkok, and Lat Krabang district of Bangkok.

The PCD chief said still air in many locations is favourable for the accumulation of the dust, while heavy road traffic has also contributed to higher air pollution. The general public is encouraged to use public transport instead of private vehicles, during this period of high air pollution.

In the northern region, the PM 2.5 level was measured between 45 to 125 micrograms per cubic meter today, while the PM 10 level was measured between 60 to 139. The figures show generally higher air pollution than yesterday. The air quality today at Chong Kham subdistrict of Mae Hong Son has activated a very unhealthy red alert, while 12 areas today have generated orange unhealthy alerts, due to outdoor burn-offs of vegetation.

Villagers are asked to cooperate by refraining from setting fires outdoors or in the forest, and to report any outdoor or forest burning by others, by calling the 1362 hotline.

Cabinet Approves 1.7 Billion Baht Budget For Underwater...

BANGKOK(NNT) – The Cabinet has approved a 1.7 billion baht budget for a project to construct an underwater electricity cable tunnel from Koh Pha Ngan to Kh Tao, in a bid to supply a rising demand for power.

Government Spokesperson Narumon Pinyosinwan, explained that 1.3 billion baht will be borrowed from local financial institutions, and the Provincial Electricity Authority will fund the remaining amount.

She further clarified that the project will cover the development of Koh Tao’s electricity grid, power distribution capacity and stability, as the southern island welcomes a rising number of visitors each year and enjoys expanding economic growth.

The three-year initiative that is expected to begin next year involves the construction of a tunnel to house the cable, the establishment of a power distribution system, and the installation of related equipment.

The project was initially begun in 2014 but was postponed until it was renewed by the current administration.

Nesdb Projects 1.5 2.5 Percent Growth In 2020

This year, the country’s economy is facing another big concern from the COVID-19 virus situation. With help from the government’s economic measures, the National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB) is expecting the Thai economy this year to grow just 1.5-2.5 percent.

Last year, the Thai economy has already suffered from many negative impacts such as the ongoing trade war, national drought disaster, and the appreciating Thai baht, all of which has resulted in only 2.4 percent economic growth.

The NESDB Secretary General Tossaporn Sirisamphan has released the Q4 2019 Thai economic report showing 1.6 percent growth, which is the lowest in 21 quarters. The performance of the final quarter means 2019 economic growth of 2.4 percent overall.

The NESDB cited the global economic slowdown, the U.S.-China trade war, strong Thai currency, budget bill delays, and the drought disaster to be the main affecting factors.

This year, the NESDB is projecting 1.5-2.5 percent growth, which has been reduced from the previous 2.7-3.7 percent estimate. This is due to the effects of the COVID-19 virus expected to remove at least 150 billion baht’s revenue from the tourism industry, should the situation be under control by March. Egat Lauds Success Of Rac Nama Fund

BANGKOK (NNT) The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) has collaborated with the Office of Natural Resources and Environment Policy and Planning as well as the International Cooperation Organization of Germany (GIZ) to compel nine air conditioning industry members in Thailand to adopt a high efficiency and environmentally-friendly refrigerant.

The effort has received funding from the Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Action (RAC NAMA), Thailand’s first fund, to develop financial mechanisms concerning climate change, which has received support from the governments of the United Kingdom (UK) and Germany via the NAMA Facility to develop Thailand’s air conditioning and refrigeration industry towards low carbon emissions; its target is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20 to 25% by the year 2030.

The Deputy Governor of Power Stations and Renewable Energy for EGAT, Theprat Theppitak, said today that over 100,000 products using eco-friendly refrigerant would be introduced to the market this year with plans for export to Europe and Japan. Such products are expected to cut power consumption by 3.5 billion units per year between now and 2030.
