BANGKOK (NNT) – With the sluggish global economy hurting foreign trade, the Ministry of Commerce has seen that free trade agreements (FTAs) can give Thai businesses a competitive advantage while supporting Thai farmers. With no tariff barriers from importers, the ministry is to organize an event for competent farmers, members of community enterprises and small scale entrepreneurs to meet and establish networks with key business partners in a bid to expand export opportunities.

The Deputy Minister of Commerce, Weerasak Wangsupakitkosol, said today he had instructed the Department of Foreign Trade to invite farmers, members of community enterprises and entrepreneurs who have export quality products, but lack sufficient marketing knowledge to exchange information and receive guidance from foreign trade experts. They would then be able to take advantage of the FTAs between Thailand and 18 countries, including the 10 ASEAN member states, China, Japan, South Korea, India, Australia, New Zealand, Chile, Peru and Hong Kong. Many Thai products benefit from these FTAs, as they are not subjected to tariffs. The meeting between different sectors was held to seek new markets for different agricultural products and generate more income for local farmers and producers.

FTAs are one of the economic drivers supporting Thai farmers and entrepreneurs. In the first 11 months of last year, trade between Thailand and its 18 FTA partners totalled 279.39 billion US dollars, or 62.76% of total trade. The top five FTA partners that Thailand exported to in the period were ASEAN, China, Japan, Australia and South Korea.

BANGKOK (NNT) – The Bank of Thailand has announced a 2.8% growth projection for the Thai economy in 2020 thanks to a better performing export sector, while the country’s economic performance in November 2019 is still in a slowdown due to declining export figures affected by economic slowdowns among trading partners.

The Bank of Thailand’s economic analysis bureau has released updated economic projections where Thailand’s export sector would result in negative 3.3 percent growth, causing goods import, industrial manufacturing, and private investment indicators to be in decline.

The government’s general and investment expenditures have also declined, while government measures have partially maintained the general public’s purchasing power.

The tourism sector has shown continuous growth, contributing as a major driver in national economic recovery, with this year’s overall economic performance expected to show 2.5 percent growth.

The overall national economic growth in 2020 is now projected to be 2.8% from the anticipated recovery of the export and investment figures. The global economy next year is expected to continue seeing fluctuations, however analysts expect global trade to gradually improve following expected clarity from trade negotiations.

Government investments for 2020 are expected to fully commence in February after the approval of the fiscal year 2020 budget bill by the parliament. The approval will enable government investment projects to fully proceed, helping stimulate spending, and benefiting the domestic economy recovery.

The Bank of Thailand also recommends the private sector increase their investments in keeping with the current economic recovery.

Thailand Business News

According to Bot’s latest Press Release, the Thai economy continued to be on a decelerating trend in November, prompting the Central Bank to use the exact same words from its previous Press Release on the Economic and Monetary Conditions in October, to describe the overall situation in November.

The value of merchandise exports continued to contract, mainly due to the economic slowdown of trading partners, consistent with deterioration in merchandise imports, manufacturing production and private investment indicators.

Public spending also contracted from both current and capital expenditures. Meanwhile, private consumption indicators continued to decelerate amid support from the government’s economic stimulus measures. The tourism sector continued to expand.

On the stability front, headline inflation edged up from the previous month on the back of higher core inflation and lower contraction in energy prices. The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate slightly increased while the number of employed persons was unchanged. The current account remained surplus. The capital and financial accounts posted a deficit from the asset position.

Details of the economic conditions are as follows:

The value of exports dropped by 7.7 percent

The value of merchandise exports contracted by 7.7 percent from the same period last year, nearly the same as export values excluding gold.

The contraction of exports in almost all categories was due to

1) the economic slowdown of trading partners;

2) the non-obvious recovery in electronic cycle; and

3) the contraction of global crude oil prices, coupled with…

0

BANGKOK(NNT) – The National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) has presented research projects at the NSTDA Beyond Limits: a Sustainability Impact event, presenting Bio-Circular-Green economy development guidelines for the industrial sector to promote national and economic development.

NSTDA President Narong Sirilertworakul said at the event the agency has been developing the NSTDA Beyond Limits: 6-6-10 concept this year to promote six research pillars, six frontier research, and ten technology development groups as guidelines to promote advanced scientific, technological, and innovative expertise which will help raise national capacity in economic development.

At the event, the NSTDA has showcased many of the key research projects it conducted in 2019, one of which was the introduction of concentrated rubber into asphalt for road paving, substituting for a commercial rubber concentrate application. This new material has been used to pave a total of 1,850 kilometers of roadway in Bangkok and other provinces, creating a positive economic impact worth 1.2 billion baht.

Other highlighted projects include the manufacturing of plastic bags to contain food waste – bags which degrade in 3-4 months, and the development of AI for the Thai artificial intelligence platform. These projects comply with the NSTDA strategy and help promote the government’s Bio-Circular-Green or BCG Economy model with practicality, and may become a key driver for S-Curve industries development.

The NSTDA chief said the agency’s research projects next year will emphasize the BCG model, focusing on four economic groups namely agriculture and food, health and medicine, energy and biochemical materials, tourism and the economy. Projects in these categories include high-density fish farm baskets, a Thai dairy industry upgrade, and the next phase of the AI for Thai development.

The NSTDA is now working with the National Electronics and Computer Technology Center to improve the performance and extend applications of AI for Thai to become a Big Data platform for BCG industries. The agency is also promoting the development of biomass power plants to meet energy demand in Thailand and the ASEAN region, a project which has received a 30 billion baht budget approval from Cabinet.
