Trespassing restaurants in Nakhon Si Thammarat being dismantled

0

NAKHON SI THAMMARAT (NNT) On the second day of the removal of restaurants at Ban Khiri Wong, found to be trespassing on a natural stream, the business owners today continued to dismantle the illegal structures according to the Marine Department and Nakhon Si Thammarat province’s directions. The demolitions must be completed in five days. Meanwhile, many tourists say they will continue to visit Ban Khiri Wong for its fine location.

The Governor of Nakhon Si Thammarat and the Marine Department had previously issued an instruction for the operators of restaurants at Tha Ha waterfall in Ban Khiri Wong, Nakhon Si Thammarat, to remove any structure which invaded the waterfall’s stream, considered a violation of the Act on Public Canal Invasion. The mandate requires all illegal structures to be removed this month.

On 17th October, restaurant owners brought in a backhoe and drills to remove concrete buildings to comply with the deadline, with workers continuing to work on the removal of structures. The process is now 80 percent complete, while at the same time the restaurants remain open for customers.

Tha Ha waterfall, which is considered to be in an area with the best air quality in the country, still welcomes many tourists, though numbers were affected slightly by the recent rainy season. Many of the tourists interviewed said they are aware of the dismantling, but will continue to visit the area to enjoy beautiful natural scenery, which should be preserved for the future.

BANGKOK (NNT) – Thailand’s export sector performance in September 2019 is recorded at a negative 1.39 percent due to global economic slowdown and Brexit.

The Trade Policy and Strategy Office Director General Pimchanok Vonkorpon has reported Thailand’s export sector performance in September 2019, saying that the sector generated 20.48 million US dollars in revenue, which is lower than expected, requiring the figure in the remaining months this year to be higher than 21 million USD to prevent annual growth to be in negative territory this year.

Despite the figure, export markets have improved for key industries such as motor vehicles and parts, electrical circuits, and air conditioners previously affected by the trade war but now showing growth, as a result of better adjustment by business operators, while products such as radios, televisions, and motorcycles and parts including big bikes, have been star players in the market with notable performances. Farm products such as fresh fruit and vegetables, and frozen or canned foods have also grown well in terms of quantity and revenue.

The figure for exports to key markets continues to show growth, especially the 7.8 percent growth for exports to the U.S., and 6.1 percent growth for exports to China. The gross export value in the first nine months of this year is now recorded at 186.57 billion US dollars, a negative 2.11 percent growth. The office now expects overall export growth this year to be a negative 1 percent, as a result of persistent global economic risks such as the trade war, Brexit, and the strong Thai baht, however Thai exporters are believed to remain strong and able to adjust to the challenges.

The Thai government is going ahead with new Free Trade Area (FTA) negotiations with more countries, to improve competitiveness. It is expected the export sector next year will swing back to a 1-2 percent growth.

The figure for imports into Thailand in September 2019 is recorded at 19.2 million US dollars, a 4.24 percent decrease. Thailand continues to maintain a trade surplus of 1.275 billion USD. The overall figure in the first nine months for goods imports is 179.19 billion USD, with 7.38 billion USD trade surplus.

Fitch Ratings raises Thailand’s outlook to positive

Thailand Business News

Investors who plan to establish a business in a foreign country usually examine its credit rating first. Fitch Ratings, an international credit rating agency, has recently raised Thailand’s outlook to positive amid the global economic slowdown.

The positive outlook is attributed to Thailand’s strong economic fundamentals and the government’s efforts to firmly establish its 20-year national strategy.

Thailand’s Economy, Banks Resilient to Rising Global Risks

Mr. James McCormack, Managing Director, Global Head of Sovereigns at Fitch Ratings, said the revision of the rating Outlook on Thailand’s ‘BBB+’ sovereign to Positive in July 2019 was driven by Fitch’s increasing confidence that lingering political risks are unlikely to derail sound macroeconomic management.

The Managing Director and Global Head of Sovereign Ratings for Fitch Ratings, James McCormack, said today that Thai economic growth this year stood at 3%, which was a little lower than the 3.2% projection, due to the global economic volatility, but Thailand is still one of 12 only countries around the world with a positive outlook.

Thailand’s economic fundamentals will remain sound despite challenges from global trade tensions, while the Thai banking sector is less exposed to external risks, such as a slowdown in China, relative to other Fitch-rated banks in Asia, according to Fitch Ratings’ sovereign and banking analysts at its annual global risk conference in Bangkok.

Most countries’ ratings have been downgraded, while the agency sees that the Thai economy and its fiscal status remain strong.

Facebook Thailand launches fake news checker

0

BANGKOK (NNT) – To curb the proliferation of fake news on social media, causing misunderstandings among the general public, Facebook Thailand has initiated action.

Facebook Thailand has launched a fake news checker function, to reduce the spread of fake news and help improve the quality of online content. The check function was developed by Facebook and AFP news agency, and certified by the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN), which will verify the content, images, and videos posted on Facebook. Posts which are found to be fake news, or to have misleading titles, will have their visibility adjusted downwards. Users will receive a warning when trying to share flagged posts. Pages found to be sharing fake news will also have their visibility reduced, and will not be allowed to use revenue functions, and may face termination.

The function uses AI technology, along with AFP reporters in 10 countries of the region. The function will soon be able to screen contents in Thai.

A lecturer at Chualongkorn University’s Faculty of Communication Arts, Ms Pijitra Suppasawatgul, said today the spread of misinformation and fake news online is growing, and will have more severe effects when related to important situation or events. The use of the checker tool by Facebook can only partially mitigate the problem, while the overall issue requires the cooperation of the general public, the government, and other online social media platforms.
