TAT staff participated in communications strategies course on sustainability agenda

Bangkok – The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has acted to advance its sustainability agenda with a tailor-made communications training course designed to mainstream the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) right across the Thai travel and tourism industry.

This course will help communicators better connect their individual corporate activities to all the 17 UN SDGs, brainstorm ideas to action them, and measure their impact.

Mr. Yuthasak Supasorn, TAT Governor, said, “This is TAT’s intention to not only just promote responsible and sustainable tourism, but also the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the year of Thailand’s Chairmanship of ASEAN, which is under the theme of ‘Advancing Partnership for Sustainability’. This will help the Thai travel and tourism industry maintain the track required by the U.N. in the upcoming ten-year period of 2020-2030, which is the ‘Decade of Delivery’ of the SDGs.”

Mr. Imtiaz Muqbil (center) and on his right, Mrs. Srisuda Wanapinyosak, TAT Deputy Governor for International Marketing – Europe, Africa, Middle East and Americas, and on his left, Mrs. Rujirasm Chatchalermkit, Executive Director of TAT’s Product Promotion Department, as well as TAT staff.

Mr. Imtiaz Muqbil, Executive Editor of Travel Impact Newswire, lecturer of this course, has designed the manual comprising six modules, which establish the complementarities between the UN SDGs, the ASEAN Socio-cultural Blueprint, the UN World Tourism Organisation sustainability agenda, the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy of King Rama IX the Great, as well as the Thailand 4.0 policy directions.

Establishing the complementarities between these global, regional and national agendas is a core theme of Thailand’s 2019 Chairmanship of ASEAN. However, converting those policies and plans into action can only happen if the public and private sectors better understand their relevance, and how the recommendations can be practically applied at the grassroots level.

Mrs. Srisuda Wanapinyosak, Deputy Governor for International Marketing (Europe, Africa, Middle East and Americas) said, “TAT is gearing up to ensure that the industry’s future growth trajectory does not exact a social, cultural and environmental cost.”

The manual’s title, “Beyond Plastic to Peace, Prosperity and Development Justice” was derived from the need to reduce plastic and food waste and focus on more deeper and complex issues that the industry is working intensively on through various campaigns.

Mr. Tanes Petsuwan, Deputy Governor for Marketing Communications said, “As we prepare to mark the sixtieth anniversary of TAT’s founding in 2020, there is no doubt that we have to raise the cause of sustainability and management to a whole new level.”

BANGKOK (NNT) – The President of Thai Airways International Public Company Limited (THAI) has confirmed that there is no lack of liquidity and that the company has sufficient cash flow to operate its business as usual.

THAI president Sumeth Damrongchaitham confirmed that the company has continually managed and supervised debt reduction since 2013, although it still has to carry out the rehabilitation plan in the midst of intense competition in the aviation industry. The company has been able to reduce its debt by approximately 48 billion baht.

The company has also prepared a report on the status of its debt and reported on the movement of loan balances on a monthly basis, as well as its annual performance, to supervising agencies, such as the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of Finance, and the Office of Public Debt Management, which have acknowledged its reports without any observations.

The plan for 32 billion baht in new borrowing in fiscal year 2020 is aimed at allowing the company to support its investment and refinance or for use it as a working capital and for normal operations and maintenance of equipment. The said budget does not include aircraft procurement, which is awaiting approval from relevant agencies.

The 32 billion baht is close to the amount of the debt plan of the previous year. As of the end of June this year, THAI’s revolving credit line accounted for 13.4 per cent of the total projected revenue for the year. This indicates that the carrier still has adequate cash reserves to operate as usual.

Bangkok to test run air purifying tower on 8th October

0

BANGKOK (NNT) – Air quality in Bangkok and neighboring provinces has returned to normal after rain in recent days, which helped eliminate airborne particles. Latest air quality readings range from good to very good. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is to install and test run an air purifying tower situated below the Siam BTS Skytrain station on 8th October to gauge its effectiveness in PM 2.5 dust reduction.

The Governor of Bangkok, Pol Gen Asawin Kwanmuang announced today that the BMA had received an offer from a private company and Kasetsat University to operate the air purifying tower.

Tests will be conducted to measure the concentration of PM 2.5 airborne particulate matter in the area before and after the installation of the tower. The BMA will be seeking sponsorship from private companies to install more of these devices should the test prove their operational effectiveness. One company, the retail developer Siam Piwat, has already contacted the BMA to offer an air purification device.

“We will find locations for these devices, such as by the road and on walkways. We have to make sure an installed device doesn’t obstruct foot and road traffic. We have to manage these for the companies, which have confirmed with us they can get a suitable device from their supplier within 45 days. The device has been bought by them, not the BMA, but we will help find installation sites.”

At Nopparat Rajathanee Hospital, the first hospital in Thailand operating a specialized pollution clinic opened earlier this year, the hospital director Somboon Tosborvorn said the hospital is prepared to screen patients affected from PM 2.5 dust during polluted period, who will be referred to the pollution clinic where specialized doctors will provide information and healthcare recommendations, as well as keeping track of the patients’ conditions. The clinic has treated 3 patients so far since the report of haze last week.

Meanwhile, the Department for Development of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine (DTAM) has held a seminar on healthcare practices preventing illnesses from PM 2.5 dust. In this seminar, a pharmacist from Chao Phraya Aphaiphubet Hospital Pakakrong Kwankhao said the consumption of some herbs such as Indian gooseberry and tumeric can help fight symptoms caused by PM 2.5 dust, while little ironweed can help improve lungs functionality; infused water from boiling laurel clockvine leaves can have detoxification properties but should not be consumed continuously for more than a month due to high cadmium content; as well as fresh green chiretta leaves which can help with common cold and alleviate inflammation and sore throat, but should be consumed only every 6-8 hours, with extra cautions for persons with cholecystitis.

The Pollution Control Department has updated the air quality data on air4thai.pcd.go.th website this morning, showing very good to moderate air quality in Bangkok and neighboring provinces. Some areas such as Bangkok Yai district was reported with no dust concentration, while some areas such as Din Daeng and Lak Si districts are reported with moderate air quality. In Saraburi province however, dust level in Na Phra Lan subdistrict today reached 113 microgram per cubic meter, making the air quality starting to cause health effects.

Fitch Ratings raises outlook on Thailand to positive

0
logomain

BANGKOK (NNT) – Investors who plan to establish a business in a foreign country usually examine its credit rating first. Fitch Ratings, an international credit rating agency, has recently raised Thailand’s outlook to positive amid the global economic slowdown. The positive outlook is attributed to Thailand’s strong economic fundamentals and the government’s efforts to firmly establish its 20-year national strategy.

The Managing Director and Global Head of Sovereign Ratings for Fitch Ratings, James McCormack, said today that Thai economic growth this year stood at 3%, which was a little lower than the 3.2% projection, due to the global economic volatility, but Thailand is still one of 12 only countries around the world with a positive outlook. Most countries’ ratings have been downgraded, while the agency sees that the Thai economy and its fiscal status remain strong. The country’s debt-to-GDP ratio stands at 40 to 42%. Although the government plans to take out more loans to implement new infrastructure projects, it is not likely to exceed the debt ceiling, which is set at 60%. Furthermore, such investments will help improve the country’s competitiveness.

The Finance Minister, Uttama Savanayana, said today it is good news that Thailand’s rating has been upgraded to positive from stable because Fitch Ratings still has confidence in the country’s economic potential. If the government is able to work in line with its 20-year national strategy, investor confidence will increase. Many renowned multinational corporations have also shown interest in expanding their businesses in Thailand.

“It’s revised to positive. The adjustment was made in July. This is interesting because they said Thailand’s outlook has been adjusted up despite challenges from global events. That’s because Thailand in the long-term still has potential. If we can follow the socio-economic development strategy, Fitch Ratings believe that Thailand can still attract businesses on a global scale. They have noticed that many multinational corporations have shown interest to invest in Thailand because they see that a new government has been set up and a strategy.”
