Thai prosecutors indicted former police chief Somyot Poompanmoung and others for covering up a 2012 Ferrari crash that killed a police officer, involving Red Bull heir Vorayuth Yoovidhya.
BANGKOK (AP) — Thailand’s prosecutors have indicted former National Police Chief Gen. Somyot Poompanmoung and others linked to a 2012 Ferrari crash case involving Red Bull heir Vorayuth “Boss” Yoovidhya, who fled after the fatal incident. They are accused of conspiring to alter the Ferrari’s recorded speed to evade charges related to the collision that killed a police officer.
Vorayuth’s ongoing evasion of justice has highlighted concerns about the impunity enjoyed by the wealthy in Thailand. Despite evidence, including alcohol and cocaine found in his system, repeated failures by prosecutors to secure his presence led to an arrest warrant in 2017, by which time he had already escaped abroad.
Only one charge of reckless driving causing death remains, with a statute of limitations set to expire in 2027. All eight indicted individuals were released on bail and must report back to court on September 10, while a past inquiry revealed a conspiracy aimed at shielding Vorayuth from legal consequences.
