The Legal Opioid ‘Brew’ Gaining Popularity Among Backpackers in Thailand

In Bangkok, kratom is discreetly sold, often unknown to backpackers. Influencer Tom Birchy promotes kratom potions, while experiences vary, with some enjoying its effects and others facing unpleasant side effects.

Kratom, distinct from Bangkok’s flashy party scene, is often sold in hidden spots, like a small halal restaurant I found, featuring home-brewed bottles priced around 50 baht. Surprisingly, many backpackers hadn’t even heard of it, although its popularity seems concentrated in southern Thailand. A traveler named Louie pointed out Tom Birchy, a notable figure in the local scene, who runs a kratom store in Ao Nang and actively promotes his products on social media.

Birchy has gained a following for his colorful kratom concoctions, marketed as “potions” that promise energy and an uplifting effect. Reviews from users highlight their enticing flavors, with some likening the experience to drinking energy drinks. Intrigued, I tried a kratom soda, enjoying its refreshing taste, but later experienced nausea, leading me to question its compatibility with my system.

Despite its lesser-known status compared to other substances, kratom’s market is expanding, especially in Thailand. Many remain unfamiliar with it, as demonstrated by the low percentage of global users. While I experimented with kratom twice, my mixed experiences leave me uncertain about future attempts.
