On June 18, 2024, Thailand’s Senate passed a groundbreaking Marriage Equality Law, making it the first Southeast Asian nation to legally recognize same-sex marriage. The law, which is pending royal endorsement, will take effect 120 days after its publication in the Royal Gazette. Companies are urged to reassess their HR policies to comply with this significant change.

The Marriage Equality Law allows spouses who register their marriage to access the same rights and obligations under existing laws. It replaces gender-specific terminology, promoting equal rights for all individuals, regardless of biological sex.

Employers are encouraged to support equal marriage benefits and protect employees from discrimination. Revising HR policies to align with the law’s provisions and considering additional benefits, such as personal leave and support for gender affirmation, can help foster an inclusive workplace.
