Thailand’s new tourism minister, Sorawong Thienthong, plans to restart a suspended tourism tax to boost revenue to 3 trillion baht, emphasizing benefits for infrastructure and tourist safety.
Thailand’s new tourism minister, Sorawong Thienthong, announced his intention to resume the collection of the 300 baht tourism tax, which was paused by the previous administration. This tax, approved by the Thai cabinet in 2021, faced opposition from the private sector, causing delays in its implementation.
Sorawong, who assumed office on September 16, 2024, aims to boost Thailand’s tourism revenue to at least 3 trillion baht this year. He believes that the tax revenue will benefit the industry by funding infrastructure development and enhancing tourist safety.
While he supports the tax, Sorawong stated that further evaluation is necessary before proceeding. Similar tourism taxes exist globally, with various cities implementing their own rates based on accommodation type and location.
