Thailand Experiences 13% Drop in New Electric Vehicle Registrations

Thailand registered 1,876,356 electric vehicles in early 2024, a 13% decline from last year. Despite this, new registrations are rising, particularly in January, with expectations for further growth.

In the first eight months of 2024, Thailand saw 1,876,356 electric vehicles (EVs) registered, marking a 13 percent decline compared to the previous year. The Department of Land Transport (DLT) reported a loss of 280,091 registrations from 2,156,447 in the same timeframe last year.

Despite the overall drop, the DLT noted a positive trend in new EV registrations, especially after January. Monthly figures show gradual growth, peaking in August with 20,658 units registered, including significant numbers of passenger vehicles and motorcycles.

DLT’s deputy director-general, Seksom Akraphand, emphasized that EVs, known for their zero carbon dioxide emissions, contribute to environmental sustainability. He expressed optimism that registrations will continue to rise through the end of the year.
